Sales Guy Ignored A No-Soliciting Sign, Got Caught By The Cops, And Had To Sit for Hours

Nothing tests your patience like door-to-door salespeople who can’t take a hint. For one Redditor, after multiple visits from pest control, lawn care, and solar panel companies, the “No Soliciting” sign was finally put up in an attempt to stop the interruptions.

But when a salesman continued to ignore the sign, the Redditor researched city ordinances, discovered that a permit was required, and made a call to the police. The result? The salesperson was confronted by police, possibly fined, and made to wait on the curb for his ride.

Was this a well-deserved response to persistent, disrespectful sales tactics, or did the Redditor overstep in punishing someone just doing their job? Keep reading to find out how others feel about this action.

'Knock on my door despite my no soliciting sign, just sit on the curb and forget about selling anything in my town for the rest of your day?'

We moved into a new cookie cutter neighborhood and since then,

we have been bothered by pest control, carpet cleaners, lawn care, solar panel firms, etc.

This was multiple times a day at first but then we put up a no soliciting sign and for a while, it worked pretty well.

Fast forward to this week, salespeople have rang my doorbell daily despite my sign.

I started by chewing them out and finding their business online to leave bad Yelp/google reviews about the encounter.

Then I researched city ordinances.

Apparently they need a permit which most don't have and they can't ignore a no soliciting sign. It's 250$ per violation - awesome.

Had my first victim yesterday who acknowledged he read my sign but thought his info

about solar panels was something I'd want to hear even though I specifically had a sign

because I didn't want to be bothered. I chewed him out and when he left, called police non emergency number.

The police came after only 15 minutes and caught up with him down the street.

I don't know if he was cited but he just sat on the curb after the police left,

probably because they told him to stop knocking on doors period, due to a lack of permit.

He had to wait there for at least an hour and half for his ride.

TL;DR: sales guy ignored my no soliciting sign deliberately, got talked to by police,

possibly fined and had to sit for a few hours waiting for his ride.

The OP took matters into their own hands when salespeople ignored their no soliciting sign, and that decision to stand firm reflects a commitment to privacy and control over their environment.

It also sheds light on the emotional side of setting boundaries and how far some people will go to protect their personal space.

What stands out in this situation is how the OP’s patience slowly wore thin. At first, they tried the simple approach by putting up a no soliciting sign, hoping that would be enough. But when the solicitors kept showing up, despite the clear sign, the OP got more and more frustrated.

And honestly, that frustration is totally understandable. When you set boundaries, like putting up a no soliciting sign, they should be respected. When people ignore them, it can feel like an invasion of your personal space, leading to feelings of anger and helplessness.

The OP’s response, going from verbal confrontations to researching city ordinances, shows how they were seeking to take control of the situation that had become overwhelming.

Psychologically, this is a classic example of what Dr. Terri Apter, a psychologist, calls the need for “self-regulation.”

As Dr. Apter explains, “When someone’s boundaries are disregarded, it leads to feelings of emotional distress. This can trigger a defense mechanism to protect oneself and one’s personal space”.

For the OP, looking up the local city ordinances was a way to regain control and enforce their boundaries in a way that felt more official.

The situation really escalated when the OP called the police after a solar panel salesman ignored the sign and kept trying to pitch his product. The quick response from the police and the possible citation show that there are systems in place to back up people who want to protect their peace.

But the salesman didn’t just face a fine, he also ended up sitting on the curb for over an hour, waiting for his ride. That’s a clear consequence of his actions, and psychologically, that humiliation probably acted as a strong deterrent for future bad behavior.

But while it might feel satisfying for the OP to see the salesman face some consequences, it’s important to think about the long-term effects of this kind of confrontation.

Dr. Laura Berman suggests, “While it’s important to stand up for your boundaries, it’s also crucial to engage in conflict in a way that doesn’t leave long-lasting negative emotional consequences for either party”.

Yes, the salesman likely learned his lesson about respecting boundaries, but the way the interaction unfolded could create further tension if the OP continues to escalate things. There’s a delicate balance between standing firm in your boundaries and creating unnecessary conflict.

While the OP’s response might have been a bit extreme, it shows just how important it is to feel respected in your own home and to maintain control over your environment.

Sometimes, even something as simple as a no soliciting sign can spark bigger consequences when people refuse to respect it.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

This group shared empathy for salespeople who were stuck in difficult canvassing jobs

feellikebeingajerk − Love that your cops actually showed up - not sure they would bother in my town.

BugOnARockInAVoid − I did this canvassing stuff for a few weeks of the summer when I was in high school.

It was the worst. I would have been glad that you reported me so I could stop.

[Reddit User] − This is why my "No Soliciting" sign is so specific.

No Soliciting, unless you're selling girl scout cookies.

I love it when the church ladies come by: "Can you read the sign? " "Yes, but we're not selling anything-"

"-yes you are, you're selling myths and invisible friends for adults." Haven't had a seller for a while though.

These commenters vented frustration about persistent solicitors ignoring “No Soliciting” signs

bern1228 − Had a no soliciting sign up and lady knocks on door.

Was a night shifter so sleep is precious. Church lady had daughter in tow.

Asked if she saw the sign and said yes, then had the nerve to say it didn't apply to her. Closed the door on her.

K3bravo − Ended up having to do the same thing to a local church that would constantly walk my neighborhood daily

despite being told repeatedly by several other families as well not to solicit in the community.

They kept ignoring us because a member of their church lived there

and apparently since she told them it was OK, they could keep doing it.

Final straw for me was when I was mowing my lawn one day and had a member of this church group

literally walking two feet behind me the entire time trying to get my attention.

Had no clue he was there as I couldn't hear him over the lawn mower.

Finally realized he was there when I shut the mower off and turned around.

Was totally not expecting someone standing right behind when mowing the lawn.

morkler − I have a no trespassing and soliciting. In my city there is really no enforcement or penalty for soliciting.

So I added the no trespassing. Still doesn't seem to work. Sadly I have not been there when people have.

I do have cameras now and have started calling the people/organizations that stop by telling them I will prosecute next time.

I had one political party stop by last fall and I contacted them notifying them I am not interested in their party

and the fact their person trespassed.

They tried telling me it is not trespassing unless they are asked to leave.

The law clearly states if it is posted and you are not invited it is definitely trespassing.

These users critiqued the unethical sales practices, highlighting how managers pressure sales reps to ignore rules

madamesquire − Sales managers will absolutely tell outside sales reps to knock anyway

after making them desperate to get sales.

"Oh, the neighborhood you were assigned has a giant red sign in front of it that says NO SOLICITING?

....If someone complains, just tell them you didn't see it.". ..."

Then, make sure you tell them all about our lawn Care and mosquito defense bundle.

They're really gonna need that this summer. " Such a scam.

Telling young girls that it's a good thing if a complete stranger invites them into their house

with no exit training if it goes bad. The s__t those people would ask you to do (while sitting back at the office day drinking OTR).

I agree with above commenter who was probably happy that you made him sit down.

They would have us knock without a permit for months knowing it was illegal.

One guy got the cops called on him 3 times in less than two weeks

and they kept sending him out into the same area because "we couldn't afford to lose that business to our competitors."

This wasn't a mom and pop operation either.

RockNRollahAyatollah − The thing that would be better if there was a way to go after the company

instead of the individual person. I used to be a person like this,

but I was going to businesses instead of houses to sell Atlanta Braves baseball tickets.

The people doing these jobs are often not well off and are doing what they can to get by.

You want the annoyances to stop and keep people from getting taken advantage by these crappy jobs?

Go after the business. I guarantee you that their superior told them to ignore signs. I sure as hell was.

Banarasiya − Sales is the job, only strong hearted people can do.

It involves getting reprimanded by both, your employer and your customer.

This group shared creative and humorous ways to handle persistent solicitors

[Reddit User] − I saw the most perfectm hand made, no soliciting sign. It said.

NO soliciting! By knocking on my door, or ringing my bell, you agree to pay me $250 per minute that you speak to me.

MisterCrispy − I get that a lot. I usually do the following:

Answer the door and immediately point out that not only does my house have a no soliciting sign

but there's a bit one at the entrance to the neighborhood as well.

I then say "I just want to warn you about the neighborhood sign though cause

there's a complete a__hole on this street that'll call the cops on door to door salespeople. "

They invariably ask which house is the a__hole's to which I reply "this one" then slam the door.

I then watch them hotfoot it away.

mycatiswatchingyou − I almost worked for a company that sold internet door to door

(never mind how that worked, that's another story).

Round 2 for the interview process was to tag along with a salesperson.

We went to very affluent neighborhoods and blatantly ignored every NO SOLICITING sign we saw.

I felt so bad. I ended up getting the job but told them no.

I'm not sinking to that level unless I absolutely have to.

Do you think the poster was too harsh, or did they handle the situation perfectly? How would you have responded to the salesperson? Share your thoughts below!
