She Adopted a Husky Two Weeks Ago, and Now the Old Owner Wants Him Back

Sometimes the biggest test of a new relationship comes just when everything finally starts working. A woman who adopted a one year old husky two weeks ago found herself facing exactly that test, a sudden, urgent text from his previous owner asking for him back, with no real explanation for what had changed.

The dog, meanwhile, had spent those two weeks quietly proving that every problem behavior he was rehomed for had simply been a bad fit, not a bad dog.

She Adopted a Husky Two Weeks Ago, and Now the Old Owner Wants Him Back

Here is the OG post:

Am i wrong for leaving my boyfriend for “doing his friend a favor”

I, (f19), and my boyfriend, (m22), have been together for 2 years. He has this friend, A, who’s lesbian, yet she’s one of those stereotypical “i’m not like other girls,...

Anyways sometime last week we were all hanging out, we have the same friend group, and somehow got to the topic of sexual relationships. She stated that she had only...

I mean he was flabbergasted, stuttering, and saying how she’s basically “still a virgin.” So, A, “JOKINGLY” said that maybe he should take her virginity. He got all flustered and...

Obviously on the ride home I told him this made me uncomfortable, but of course he said, “that’s just how she jokes, it’s not that deep.”

Long story short; they went out for drinks Monday, he came back and told me they had sex, and it’s not cheating cause she’s lesbian and he was doing her...

I was appalled and left, yet i’m getting bombarded by texts from him, A, and the group saying how it’s nothing, how it didn’t mean anything, and how i’m being...

I just want to know if anyone has any input or advice because I don’t know what to think at this point.

edit: yes, we’re clearly not together anymore, obviously i’m hurt and upset, i’m just trying to figure out if i could have handled the situation better by not storming off...

edit 2: yes, we started dating when i was 17 and he was 20, where i live the age of consent is 16, it’s legal, don’t worry.

edit 3: i understand that dating a 17 year old at 20 doesn’t look good on his part and in no way am i defending him, but i am the...

The adoption itself was never impulsive. She had wanted a second dog for a while, understood exactly what she was taking on with a husky, and had already dog proofed accordingly, a fully fenced yard reinforced with a concrete barrier underneath to prevent the breed’s famous escape attempts.

The previous owner had been upfront about a handful of behavior issues and explained the dog just was not getting along with their other dog and that they no longer had the time or space he needed. Two weeks in, none of the warned about problems had actually shown up. Her older dog took to him instantly, he adjusted to the doggie door without trouble, and her working from home gave him exactly the kind of attention and structure he seemed to have been missing.

Then came the text. The previous owner wanted him back, framed with enough urgency that she was asked to bring him over as soon as possible. No real explanation was offered for what had suddenly changed in their situation just two weeks after deciding they could not keep him. She found herself second guessing her own footing, not because she doubted the dog belonged with her, but because the previous owner had known him longer, and that felt like it should count for something.

It is worth looking closely at the timeline here, because it tells its own story. Two weeks is an unusually short window for a household’s circumstances to shift enough to reverse a rehoming decision that was, by the original owner’s own account, already carefully considered. What is far more common, and far less discussed, is a wave of guilt or grief hitting after the fact, sometimes stirred up by a partner, a child, or simply the quiet of a house that suddenly has one less dog in it.

Veterinary research, including guidance referenced by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists, indicates that dogs placed in a home better suited to their needs typically settle within two to four weeks and go on to form genuine new attachments, especially when the new environment addresses the exact issues that led to the original rehoming in the first place. That same body of research also notes that bouncing a dog back and forth between homes during this adjustment window tends to produce more stress than staying put, even when the original environment feels more familiar.

That distinction matters enormously here. The previous owner’s attachment to the dog is real and understandable, but attachment is not the same as fit. A living situation that could not accommodate two dogs, or could not manage a husky’s particular needs, does not become more workable just because guilt sets in two weeks later. Sending the dog back into that same unresolved situation would not undo the original problem. It would simply reset the clock on it, with the added cost of forcing the dog through another disorienting transition right as he was settling in.

There is also something worth noting in how quickly the new owner moved to protect the placement once she decided to keep him, registering his microchip in her name, getting him seen by a vet, starting preventive care, and scheduling a neuter appointment. None of that reads as impulsive attachment. It reads as someone treating this like the permanent home it was always supposed to become.

Reddit had plenty to say about this one. The response was close to unanimous, with commenters pointing out that a dog who is finally thriving should not be uprooted based on a change of heart with no real explanation behind it. Several suspected the original household’s overwhelm would simply resurface if the dog went back, and more than one commenter half joked about building a moat, a nod to just how firmly people felt this dog had already found his real home.

Agitated_Fun_7628 - Nope. I'm gay. Nope nope nope, he's a dirty cheater and she just wanted to sabotage your relationship. She's scum and he's toxic.

Run from them. All of them. They're super messed up people. You're not a bigot, they're just radioactive.

tmink0220 - He cheated, not only that, he told you he was going to cheat. Leave that toxic group alone...HE is not a good guy.

mcdohlsbaine - Stay gone. That’s a different level of dishonest in cheating.

Two weeks was apparently all it took for a dog with a list of behavior problems to become, quite simply, a good dog in the right environment.

What looked at first like a difficult ethical question, whether loyalty to a previous owner should outweigh a dog’s actual wellbeing, turns out to have a fairly clear answer once you follow where he is actually thriving.

Was holding onto him really something to feel guilty about, or was it simply giving him the stability he never had a real chance to find the first time around?
