She Agreed to Her Fiancé’s Ex Attending Their Wedding, Then Learned the Truth About Their Past

in Social Issues

Planning a wedding is supposed to be about building a future together, but one bride-to-be suddenly found herself questioning whether she could trust the person she was planning to marry.

The 28-year-old woman had been dating her 27-year-old fiancé for three years, and they had been engaged for about a year. Their destination wedding was scheduled for October, and because it was taking place in her fiancé’s home country, many of his old friends and relatives would be flying in.

When they were finalizing the guest list, her fiancé asked whether she would be comfortable with him inviting an ex-girlfriend. She immediately disliked the idea, but he explained that the woman was part of his old high school friend group and that the wedding would be the first major reunion they had all had in years.

Based on that explanation, she reluctantly agreed.

She just didn’t realize how incomplete the explanation was.

WIBTAH if I uninvited my fiancee's ex from our wedding without telling him?

My (28F) fiancé (27M) and I are getting married this October.

We’ve been dating for 3 years and engaged since last year. A couple of months back, when we were finalizing our invite list, my fiancé asked me if it would...

My first reaction was "oh hell nah," but I asked him what he meant. He told me they were part of the same high school friend group and that this would...

(we’re having a destination wedding in his home country, so everyone is flying in). Based on that, I said I was fine with it.Two days ago, the whole friend group...

I popped in to say hi briefly and noticed that one of the girls didn't seem very happy to see me (think smiling and taking a vodka shot at the...

I clocked it right away and later mentioned to my fiancé, "She still seems hung up on high school." He casually replied, "Oh, that’s [Name] from [Place]."

Turns out, she’s actually his most recent ex before me. They officially broke up only a year before we started dating, and they kept seeing each other on and off...

To make matters worse, as far as I know, they only broke up because of distance (they were long-distance the entire time), so I feel like she’s probably still harboring...

I want him to uninvite her since I didn't realize she was a recent ex rather than a distant high school ex. However, he’s refusing.

He says she already booked her flights and accommodations, and uninviting her now would cause major drama in his friend group and with his family (since their families are close...

He also claims he wouldn't have invited her if I hadn't given the okay in the first place.

Would I be the asshole if I uninvited her myself in a casual, "hey girlie" kind of way, or by threatening an ultimatum?

She Thought His Ex Was Someone From the Distant Past

A couple of days before, the bride-to-be joined a video call with her fiancé’s old friend group. They were discussing travel plans when she noticed one woman seemed particularly uncomfortable around her.

The woman smiled, but then immediately took a shot of vodka.

That caught her attention.

Later, she mentioned it to her fiancé, who casually identified the woman. That’s when everything changed.

The woman wasn’t some distant high school ex.

She was his most recent ex-girlfriend.

The couple had officially broken up only about a year before he started dating his current fiancée. Even worse, they had reportedly continued seeing each other on and off until he met her.

Their relationship had ended because of distance, which made the bride wonder whether there were still unresolved feelings involved.

Suddenly, the invitation she had previously accepted didn’t feel quite so harmless.

She told her fiancé she wanted the woman uninvited.

He refused.

His reasoning was that the ex had already paid for flights and accommodation. Uninviting her would create drama within his friend group and potentially cause problems with their families, who were close.

He also pointed out that he wouldn’t have invited her if his fiancée hadn’t originally agreed.

That argument only made things worse.

From the bride’s perspective, she hadn’t actually agreed to the situation she was now facing. She had agreed to an old high school friend and former girlfriend. She hadn’t knowingly agreed to having his most recent ex, someone he had continued seeing shortly before their relationship began, sitting among their guests at their destination wedding.

And now she was considering taking matters into her own hands.

She wondered whether she would be wrong to send the woman a casual message herself and withdraw the invitation, or perhaps give her fiancé an ultimatum.

But that might only create another problem.

The Real Problem Wasn’t the Ex

Many Redditors focused on something deeper than whether the ex should attend.

The fiancé had given his future wife information that technically allowed her to say yes, but left out details that could reasonably have changed her answer.

One commenter argued that this wasn’t really an invitation problem at all. It was a fiancé problem.

The concern wasn’t simply that an ex was attending. It was that the bride felt she had been deprived of the opportunity to make an informed decision.

Relationship experts often emphasize that healthy relationships depend on honest communication, particularly when discussing boundaries and potentially sensitive relationships with former partners. The Gottman Institute’s relationship resources frequently stress the importance of open communication, trust, and addressing difficult issues directly rather than avoiding them.

That distinction matters here. The bride’s feelings aren’t necessarily unreasonable, but secretly removing a guest from their wedding would create a new breach of trust. Instead of solving the original problem, it could turn one uncomfortable disagreement into a much larger relationship crisis.

The healthiest move would be for the couple to sit down and discuss exactly why the new information changed her feelings, what boundaries they both expect around former partners, and whether they can genuinely resolve the issue before getting married.

Because ultimately, the wedding guest list is only the surface issue.

The bigger question is whether these two people can handle uncomfortable disagreements without hiding things from each other or going behind each other’s backs.

Here's the input from the Reddit crowd:

Some commenters said the bride would absolutely be wrong to secretly uninvite the ex.

Ok_Albatross8909 − Yes, YWBTAH. Your partner gained your agreement by giving you a part-truth. When you were uncomfortable when you got the full truth and more information regarding her attitude...

he prioritised her feelings and his friend’s perceptions of him over you. The person he’s marrying. He even twisted this to be your fault for initially agreeing. It’s not.

It is his fault he failed to give you the whole context. Best case scenario, he’s still an inconsiderate bad communicator and avoidant.

This does not mean you get to go behind his back and disinvite her. That is avoiding the real problem, and at a bare minimum it’s not how healthy relationships...

You don’t have to marry this man just because you’ve planned the wedding.

not-the-name-i-chose − YWBTAH…. BUT this isn’t an invite issue, this is a fiancé issue. He lied about his past with her (yes, neglecting important information is lying). And he’s more...

I’d be looking back at my whole relationship and wondering when/why he puts everyone else’s feelings in front of my own. You deserve better than this.

annang − If you can’t have this conversation with him and come to an agreement peacefully, you shouldn’t get married. Don’t marry someone you feel the need to lie to....

Others were far more concerned about the fiancé’s behavior. They argued that he had deliberately left out important information and was now using her original agreement as a way to avoid taking responsibility.

octogeneral − YWBTAH It's far too late now. You already agreed, she already paid money. Just because you didn't like the face she made? Be the bigger person, it's not...

RoyalRulerofHearts − Honestly, yes, you would be the AH if you secretly uninvited her yourself. But I also understand why you’re upset. You agreed to her invitation based on information...

You thought this was some old high-school ex from years ago; you didn’t know she was his most recent ex, that they continued seeing each other until shortly before you...

That’s a pretty significant difference. However, **going behind your fiancé’s back and uninviting his guest from your shared wedding is not the solution.

It turns a difficult situation into a massive trust issue between the two of you. The bigger issue is actually your fiancé’s handling of this.

He needs to understand why this information changes how you feel and take your concerns seriously rather than hiding behind “but you already said yes. ”

You consented to something based on a misunderstanding. You’re allowed to reconsider.

I’d tell him very directly: “I’m not comfortable with her attending now that I know the full history. I’m not asking you to pretend she never existed or to control...

I’m telling you that having your most recent ex, who you were still seeing shortly before we got together, at our destination wedding makes me uncomfortable.

I agreed because I genuinely believed she was someone from your distant past. That’s not what this is. I need us to actually discuss boundaries and whether having her there...

”And I’d pay attention to his response. The important question isn’t just whether she attends.

It’s whether your fiancé can have a mature conversation about boundaries, reassure you without dismissing you, and acknowledge that the circumstances are different from what you originally agreed to. Also,...

😂 **Absolutely do not do that. ** That’s the kind of thing that can explode your wedding, your relationship, and his entire friend group simultaneously.

If she ultimately attends, you and your fiancé should have very clear boundaries beforehand. But **don’t make a unilateral decision about your own wedding behind your future husband’s back. **

Several people pointed out that she never actually agreed to this version of events. She agreed based on what she had been told.

Sufficient_Song3387 − No. I would tell him I was doing it and why. He lied about who she was. She isn't his HS gf. She is someone from 3 yrs...

He didn't give you a choice to say yes or no based on who she actually was. Now, he is trying to guilt you into giving him his way again.

If you don't say no now, he will pull similar manipulative stunts in the future. Edit: BTW I don't think she should have to tell the woman, but I doubt...

jigglituff − yes you WBTAH that's your partner, you don't do stuff behind their back, you do stuff in partnership with him.

BoardPrestigious35 − YWBTA, she isn’t the problem, he is. He’s omitting important truths and wants her there even though his bride does not.

Really weird he wants his most recent ex at his wedding so badly. Does he want to show her what she missed out on or something?

Wide-Perspective-864 − he already Picked You, dont make him regret it....

LittleCats_3 − YWBTA to yourself if you marry someone that would lie to you about the nature of a relationship to a woman he’s inviting to your wedding.

He didn’t disclose who the ex really was until you saw her and got the weird vibe. You never would have said yes to the invite if you had the...

After hearing that she’s caught up in old high school stuff HE should want to uninvite her too. I would pause the wedding personally.

Don’t go behind his back and be like him tell him that you need to put a pause on anything going forward until you can be on the same page.

The bride isn’t wrong for feeling blindsided. Learning that the woman she thought was an old high school ex was actually her fiancé’s most recent former partner would make many people uncomfortable.

But secretly sending the ex a cancellation message would probably be a terrible idea.

If the wedding is going to happen, the couple needs to solve the trust issue together. She deserves the full truth, and he deserves to have his say about guests at their shared wedding.

And if they can’t reach an agreement without ultimatums, deception, or going behind each other’s backs, perhaps the most important wedding decision isn’t who gets an invitation, but whether they’re ready to send one another down the aisle at all.
