She Asked Her Seatmate to Stop Talking During a Work Deadline, and Her Flight Neighbor Called Her Hostile

For six hours, a plane seat can feel like a tiny office, bedroom, dining room, and social space all at once. That becomes especially complicated when two strangers have completely different ideas about what the flight should be for.

One passenger learned that the hard way while flying from Denver to Boston for an important client presentation. She had a laptop open, noise-canceling headphones on, and several hours of work still ahead of her. Her presentation was scheduled for 9 a.m. the following morning, so this was not exactly the time to make a new travel buddy.

The woman sitting beside her apparently had a very different plan for the flight. She wanted to talk. What started as a harmless question quickly turned into repeated interruptions, a blunt request for silence, and an unexpected complaint to the flight attendant.

By the end of it, the passenger was left wondering whether setting a perfectly reasonable boundary had somehow made her the rude one.

She Asked Her Seatmate to Stop Talking During a Work Deadline, and Her Flight Neighbor Called Her Hostile

'AITA for telling the woman next to me on a 6 hour flight to stop talking to me while I was working?'

I was flying Denver to Boston last Tuesday for a client presentation. I had my laptop out, noise-canceling headphones on and was actively typing/editing a deck that I was presenting...

The woman next to me tapped my arm to ask if I was "in tech" because of the laptop stickers. I said "marketing, just working on a deadline, sorry" and...

She tapped me again 10 minutes later to ask if I'd seen some Netflix show because my sticker looked like the logo.

I said "no, sorry, really need to focus" and turned slightly away.

She tapped me a third time to tell me her daughter was in marketing and started showing me photos on her phone.

I finally said, as politely as I could: "I paid for WiFi to finish this presentation and I'm on a deadline. I really can't chat right now, I hope you...

She went silent, but then called the flight attendant over and asked to be moved because I was "aggressive and hostile."

The flight attendant asked if everything was okay. I said I just needed to work. The woman got moved to another seat (middle seat, worse spot), and I heard her...

The guy across the aisle later told me I should have just humored her for 20 minutes because "she was probably lonely."

My girlfriend thinks I was too blunt and should have faked a headache or something.

But I had 4 hours of work to do, I was polite the first two times, and I feel like "I need to work" should be enough of a boundary...

She Thought Her Signals Were Clear

The traveler was already working when the woman beside her tapped her arm and asked whether she worked in tech because of the stickers on her laptop.

She answered politely that she worked in marketing and was trying to finish something for a deadline. Then she put her headphones back on.

That should have been enough.

About ten minutes later, the woman tapped her again. This time, she wanted to know whether the passenger had watched a particular Netflix show because one of the laptop stickers reminded her of its logo.

Again, the passenger politely declined and explained that she really needed to concentrate. She even turned slightly away, making her intention clearer without becoming confrontational.

But there was a third interruption.

The woman began talking about her daughter, who apparently worked in marketing, and started showing the passenger photos on her phone.

At that point, the passenger finally decided that subtle hints were not working.

She explained that she had paid for Wi-Fi specifically so she could finish her presentation and was under a deadline. She told the woman that she really could not chat and hoped she understood.

It was a direct boundary, but hardly an explosive one.

The woman apparently saw it differently.

A Simple Boundary Became a Complaint

After going quiet, the woman called over a flight attendant and asked to be moved because she felt the passenger had been “aggressive and hostile.”

The flight attendant checked in with the passenger, who simply explained that she needed to work.

The woman was eventually moved to another seat, reportedly a middle seat that was less comfortable than her original spot.

As she left, the passenger overheard her complaining that young people were rude these days.

The irony was not lost on the traveler.

She had not shouted. She had not insulted the woman. She had not told her to leave her alone in crude language. She had answered her questions twice and explained, as clearly as possible, that she had work to finish.

Still, the incident left her second-guessing herself.

A man across the aisle later told her that she should have simply humored the woman for twenty minutes because she was probably lonely. Even her girlfriend thought she had been a little too blunt and suggested she could have pretended to have a headache instead.

But that raises an uncomfortable question. How many excuses is someone expected to invent before “I need to work” becomes an acceptable reason not to talk?

The Etiquette Experts Back Up the Boundary

Airplane etiquette does not require passengers to become unwilling conversation partners simply because they happen to share an armrest.

Travel etiquette guidance generally recommends acknowledging a seatmate politely and then watching for social cues. Headphones, a laptop, limited responses, and turning attention back toward work are all fairly obvious signals that someone would prefer some quiet. The Points Guy specifically notes that headphones can indicate a traveler does not want to keep a conversation going.

Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman has similarly advised travelers to use headphones and other subtle signals when they want some alone time. Other travel etiquette guidance also suggests that if someone clearly wants to work or rest, the considerate response is to give them space.

That does not mean the woman was wrong for initially trying to start a conversation. People absolutely do meet interesting strangers on airplanes. The problem was that the first attempt was met with a polite decline, and the second attempt received essentially the same message.

At that point, continuing to push the conversation placed the burden of politeness entirely on the person who was already trying to work.

There is also an important distinction between being lonely and being entitled to someone’s attention. The woman may genuinely have wanted company, and there is nothing wrong with that. But loneliness does not make another passenger responsible for providing entertainment.

Here's the feedback from the Reddit community:

manmanatee − You were clear and it sounds like you were polite at first. This woman does sound lonely, and entitled—neither of which is your problem! you’re not in the...

jrolls81 − If work and your headphones didn’t deter her I’m not sure a headache would Edit: also if that guy was close enough to hear the interaction he was...

Eyerate − I cant said this loud enough, HELL NO NTA. The worst epidemic we have right now is entitlement.

DifficultWing2453 − NTA Years ago, I was at a gathering of graduate students at my university in Massachusetts, including a bunch of visitors from North Carolina.

They had been traveling to a number of universities in the Northeast. I asked them how they found people along the way.

They said everyone was nice except in Boston where the people were rude. I asked what happened in Boston.

The answer: They were sitting on the train heading to the city and the person next to them was reading the paper and did not talk to them at all.

They thought that was very rude. I laughed and said that talking to a stranger on the commute would have been considered rude by Boston standards.

Broad-Cranberry-9050 − NTAH, You were politelty telling her that you were on a deadline. Was your GF on the flight with you? If so, id say next time sit on...

littlescreechyowl − I don’t even want to chat with my own husband on an airplane. It’s loud, hard to hear, you’re constantly repeating stuff. Not even a little wrong.

Local_Swing_696 − Not wrong. So you were expected to change your behaviour to accommodate her but she was not expected to change hers for you. Its a crazy world, people...

heyfriendss − NTA. The hypocrisy of her saying young people are so rude these days when in fact she was the one being rude to you. And yet she is...

Leaf-Stars − NTA. Entertaining her isn’t your job.

dd97483 − no. she couldn’t take a f__king hint.

Final Thoughts

There is nothing wrong with saying hello to the stranger sitting beside you on a plane. There is also nothing wrong with deciding that you would rather spend the next six hours working, sleeping, reading, or staring silently into the middle distance.

The passenger gave her seatmate several chances to understand that she was busy. She eventually said it plainly and politely. That is not hostility. It is a boundary.

Maybe the woman really was lonely. Maybe she genuinely felt embarrassed by being rejected. Both things can be true while the passenger is still completely justified in wanting to finish her work.

After all, a six-hour flight is a long time. Nobody should have to spend it explaining why they don’t want to talk.
