She Called Her Mom a Hypocrite After Years of Threats to Kick Her Out

For years, she had watched her parents treat her independence like a problem that needed to be punished. Now, in her late 30s, she thought those days were behind her. Then her mother called to complain about her other daughter, and one sentence brought all those old memories rushing back.

Her sister was also in her late 30s, still living at home, and dating an older man who apparently had no plans to marry her. Their father had confronted the boyfriend about his intentions, and the answer had left their mother furious.

What happened next forced her to confront a family double standard she had been carrying for years.

She Called Her Mom a Hypocrite After Years of Threats to Kick Her Out

'AITAH for calling out my mom’s double standard between me and my sister?'

My mom called me a couple of months ago and was basically venting about how frustrated she is with my sister. My sister is in her late 30s, still lives...

Earlier that day, my dad had a conversation with my sister’s boyfriend and asked him what his intentions were. From what my mom told me, the boyfriend basically said he...

My mom was really stressed out because apparently my sister was okay with this situation, but my mom wasn’t.

I asked her why our dad had to have that conversation with the boyfriend in the first place. She said it was because my sister is incapable of having that...

I told her that if my sister is a grown adult and they don’t like the choices she’s making, they should give her the option to move out and live...

The reason I suggested this is because my entire twenties were basically filled with my parents threatening to kick me out over the stupidest things, especially whenever I argued with...

One example: I was once threatened with having to move out if I didn’t help them pay the back taxes on their house.

I was basically told that if we lost the house, it would be on me. I ended up taking out a $13k loan to pay the government so we could...

Anyway, back to the present conversation. After I suggested my sister be given the option to move out if she doesn’t want to follow their advice, my mom said, “No...

And honestly, something in me just snapped. I felt really triggered, but more than that, I suddenly felt like… I wasn’t one of her children. I immediately said, “You’re a...

I could not believe what I was hearing. I called her a liar and told her she absolutely did threaten to kick me out, for YEARS. Honestly, it felt like...

At the time, I didn’t think much of the conversation because this kind of thing is unfortunately not unusual with her. Anyway, my sister eventually dumped the guy a couple...

At first I assumed my mom was just upset and healing from everything that happened with my sister’s relationship since they’re highly enmeshed..

Turns out it was because of me. Confirmed by my sister.. It’s now been over two months, and my mom has completely iced me out and hasn’t spoken to me.

So… AITAH for calling my mom a h__ocrite and a liar after she said she could never threaten to kick one of her children out, when she literally did that...

UPDATE: First of all, thank you all so much for your comments. I’ve been a longtime Reddit lurker and rarely post, so I had a lot of anxiety about sharing...

I’ve always argued with my parents, but I had never directly verbalized to my mother about her hurtful qualities. I genuinely felt that I went too far, but I also...

Reading the nearly unanimous feedback that I’m NTA has brought me some comfort, but it has also made me sad about the reality of my situation. Thank you all for...

I had never heard of the narcissist prayer before, but learning about it has brought a lot of clarity to the unhealthy cycle I’ve been experiencing.

To the commenters who shared similar stories, or stories that were even more heartbreaking, I’m truly sorry for what you’re going through or have gone through. Thank you for being...

There’s some comfort in knowing that there are people who can relate, and in knowing that we can be a support system for one another. We may be strangers, but...

Her mother explained that her sister apparently could not have an adult conversation with her boyfriend herself, so their parents felt they needed to step in. The poster questioned that reasoning. Her sister was a grown woman. If she wanted to stay in the relationship, that was her choice.

She suggested that if their parents disagreed so strongly, they could simply give her sister the option to move out and make her own decisions.

That suggestion hit a nerve.

During her own twenties, the poster had repeatedly been threatened with being kicked out whenever she pushed back against her parents or demanded more independence. One incident still stood out. Her parents were dealing with back taxes on their house, and she was told that if the family lost it, the blame would be hers.

She eventually took out a $13,000 loan to help pay the government.

So when her mother suddenly said, “I could never do that to my children,” something inside her snapped.

She called her mother a hypocrite and reminded her that she had threatened to kick her out for years.

Her mother denied it.

The denial made things worse. The poster called her a liar and insisted that this had happened repeatedly. Then her mother delivered the line that hurt most: she said her daughter deserved it.

And hung up.

The conversation might have ended there, but the consequences continued. A few days later, the sister ended her relationship. Soon after, the parents stopped attending family gatherings and birthdays. At first, the poster assumed her mother was simply upset about the breakup.

Then her sister told her the truth.

Their parents had withdrawn because of her.

More than two months passed without her mother speaking to her.

Family conflicts like this can become especially painful when people remember the same events differently. Psychologist and author Harriet Lerner has written extensively about family relationships and boundaries, emphasizing that people cannot control another person’s reactions, but they can decide how they participate in unhealthy patterns. She also argues that changing one’s own behavior can sometimes alter a family dynamic, even when other relatives resist that change. Psychology Today, Harriet Lerner

That perspective helps explain why the argument hit the poster so hard. Her mother’s statement was not just about her sister. It collided with years of memories in which the poster had been treated as though independence was something she needed to earn.

At the same time, calling her mother a hypocrite and a liar was unlikely to produce a productive conversation. The poster was not simply debating parenting philosophy. She was reacting to years of accumulated resentment.

The most revealing moment may have been her mother’s response that she “deserved it.” Even if the mother genuinely remembered those years differently, that statement acknowledged the underlying attitude. The argument was no longer about whether the threats happened. It was about whether the daughter had deserved them.

That is a much harder wound to dismiss.

Here's the feedback from the Reddit community:

Many commenters believed the mother had a clear favorite and that the sister was being treated as the golden child.

Maria_Dragon − Try to maintain the relationship with your sister and enjoy the peace of not dealing with your mom.

TBvunza98 − NTA. Parents like to alter reality sometimes to act flawless, especially as your sister is the golden child. Enjoy these moments of bliss without your mother

Loulou107 − Your mother is toxic. She shouldn’t be venting to you about your sister. Instead she should talk her concerns with your sister.

She shouldn’t be encouraging enmeshment with your sister either. She sure as hell shouldn’t be giving you the silent treatment. I’m not sure what positiveness she brings to your life...

But I’d be taking her silent treatment as a gift to heal from the dysfunction. But I’d recommend some therapy for you. And definitely NTA.

Others pointed out that the mother’s silent treatment could give the poster an unexpected opportunity to step away from a stressful family dynamic.

Adelucas − Sounds like you have the best result. Your parents removed themselves from your life and you can move on without the stress they bring.

Your sister may be the golden child, but it doesn't mean she likes it. She may even envy you for the fact you've escaped their suffocating control. You know the...

Be done with her. She might claim she loves you but her actions prove otherwise.

NoContribution9322 − NTA, the trash took itself out !

JosKarith − Ntah. Enjoy your peace from them, I'm sure they'll come creeping back with an oh so generous offer of how you can "make it right" to them when...

Several commenters also focused on the $13,000 loan.

Sea_Substance9163 − When mom comes back *ready to receive your apology* remember she said "you deserved it! " Repeat that back to her. She admitted it then blamed you. "Mom,...

grumpy__g − Keep going to the family events. Have fun. Let her behave like a toddler. Maybe even tell people how you once took out s loan of 13k and...

boundaries4546 − As a mental health clinician, I do know better than to diagnose someone based on that. But that denial is so f__king textbook narcissist.

Icing you out, and punishing you for telling the truth! ! Given your mother’s treatment of you, I don’t know why you would still want to have any contact with...

GossyGirl − Absolutely NTAH. Your mum is not a good mother. She completely iced out one child while smothering the other.

She has absolutely no clue and she’s only angry at you because the truth hurts. Go on with your life without her because she doesn’t deserve you. If it was...

Final Thoughts

The argument was ugly, but it did not come out of nowhere. The poster had years of memories behind those accusations, and hearing her mother claim she could never treat her sister that way apparently made those memories impossible to ignore.

Her mother may eventually reach out again. If she does, the question will not simply be whether the daughter apologizes for calling her a hypocrite.

It will be whether both of them are finally willing to acknowledge what happened in the past.

Because sometimes the argument that looks like it started yesterday has actually been building for twenty years.

Was she wrong to finally call out the double standard, or was this a case of an old wound finally being named?
