She Promised Her Boyfriend’s Friends Her Airline Discount- Then Took It Back. Was She Wrong?

Picture this: You’re doing something generous, offering your boyfriend and his two best friends your precious airline discount so they can take a long-awaited trip together. Then, out of nowhere, those same friends ditch your boyfriend to attend a concert… and still expect you to hook them up with cheap flights?

That’s the turbulence one Redditor, a young airline employee, hit when loyalty collided with entitlement. Her story, shared on Reddit’s AITA subreddit, has people divided: was she petty for pulling the perk, or did those friends deserve to be grounded?

Let’s call her Sky. With only three discounted tickets left for the year, she happily said yes when her boyfriend, Alex, asked if his buddies, James and Noah, could join them on a vacation.

But things took a turn when the guys moved the trip up a week to attend a concert, knowing full well Alex couldn’t change his time off. Sky, fed up, rebooked the trip just for her and Alex, and told the other two to find full-price fares elsewhere. Cue the group chat meltdown.

She Promised Her Boyfriend’s Friends Her Airline Discount- Then Took It Back. Was She Wrong?

More Than Just a Discount: Where Loyalty Takes Flight

Aita For Not Letting My Boyfriend’s Best Friends Use My Airline Discount After Saying They Could?

Throwaway because all parties know my account name. Backstory: My boyfriend (Alex\*) and I have been together for 4 years, I’ve become friends with his two best friends (James\* and Noah\*) but we’re not particularly close nor do we ever hang out without him.

I work for an airline and one of the major perks is that I get discounts on flights that I can also use for family and friends. As I am in my first year with the company I only get a certain number of discount seats and I had 3 left for the year.

Situation: Alex asked me if I could use my discount to buy tickets for him and his two best friends. I happily agreed since he deserved a nice holiday. He booked his time off work and they made their plans. They were to send me the money and then I would put it all on my card just for simplicity. Three nights ago Alex came home really upset.

He told me his friends had decided to change the holiday dates, bringing them forward a week, because it clashed with a concert they wanted to go to.

He was upset because he couldn’t move his holiday dates with work and when he told his friends they had decided to go without him because they had been looking forward to the gig for ages.

I was pretty angry on his behalf especially since he had done most of the planning, including finding the hotel. To make up for I started planning a trip for me and him on his holiday dates. James messaged me last night and said he would put the money in my account this morning.

No ask if he could still use my discount, no explanation for what they had done, nothing. I was outraged that he would even suggest using my discount after f**king over my boyfriend.

I sent him a polite but blunt message explaining that he and Noah were no longer able to use my discount on this holiday as I would be using the seats for me and Alex and that they were still welcome to use them on a holiday that involved my boyfriend in the future.

He replied with a barrage of texts saying that I was being selfish and unfair as I had “promised” two seats to him and Noah and that they were using the money they were saving to go to the concert. He even phoned Alex to complain. Alex is torn.

He thinks it’s a little unfair to let his friends down and doesn’t want this affecting the relationship between me and his friends so I should just give them the seats to keep the peace. I refused and was hurt that he was still taking sticking up for them..

Am I the a**hole for going back on my word and choosing to use the seats for myself?.

UPDATE: Thank you everyone for your support.

I must admit I know this seems a bit like a validation post with all the NTA votes but I hate going back on my word and I guess I did feel a bit like an a**hole just because I've known these guys 4 years and didn't want to make life hard for my boyfriend so I needed some honest opinions.

This sub has shown me the light and I will be showing Alex this when I get home. He is a massive people pleaser and hates letting people down so that explains it but he's going to get a spine even if I have to grow it in a lab. I'm standing my ground and taking the trip myself. Any holiday suggestions?

2ND UPDATE: Thank you everyone for your votes and insights. It made me realise that even though most of you have voted me NTA, there are some things I hadn’t considered.

I have spoken to Alex and shown him this thread (guess I don’t know why I used a throwaway) and he actually feels a lot better about speaking to them about it now.

He apologised for making me feel bad for standing up for him when he didn’t stand up for himself and I apologised for not discussing my choice with him before I told his friends they can’t use my discount in the way that I did.

He said he’s just going to let it play out but he’ll be willing to forgive them eventually. So for those wanting a final dramatic update, I don’t think we’ll be getting one.

For anyone asking or not believing the story because of this: I don’t know the story of the concert, this is the story as I know it from my point of view. They’re going to see SKEPTA.

When Loyalty Takes Flight and Friends Crash Land

Talk about a turbulence-filled tale! Sky’s story is a wild ride through loyalty, boundaries, and the fallout of flaky friends. She was ready to hook Alex’s pals up with cheap flights, only for them to bail on him for a concert without a hint of remorse.

When James had the audacity to expect her discount anyway, Sky shut it down, reserving those seats for her and Alex. Was she petty, or was this a masterclass in standing up for her man?

Let’s break it down. Sky’s anger is relatable, who wouldn’t be steamed when their partner’s friends pull a stunt like that? Alex did the heavy lifting for the trip, yet James and Noah prioritized a gig over him. Sky’s blunt text, denying them the discount, was her line in the sand: loyalty to Alex trumped her promise.

On the flip side, Alex’s plea to “keep the peace” shows he’s caught in a tug-of-war between his girlfriend and his friends. James’ tantrum about her “selfishness” doesn’t help his case, it screams entitlement.

Drawing the Line: When Boundaries Matter More Than Promises

This whole situation touches something deeper, how tricky it can be when your partner’s friends start crossing lines. According to a 2023 study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, nearly two-thirds of couples deal with stress when friends don’t respect relationship boundaries.

Sky’s story is a perfect example. Her boyfriend’s buddies acted like her generosity came with no limits, but she knew better—and she drew the line where they clearly couldn’t.

Relationship expert Dr. John Gottman puts it best: “Loyalty to your partner means prioritizing their feelings over external pressures” (The Gottman Institute, 2023). Sky’s move aligns here, but her snap decision without looping Alex in stirred some avoidable friction.

What could’ve helped? Sky might’ve chatted with Alex before texting James, aligning as a team. For Alex, growing a spine (as Sky jokingly put it) could mean calling out his friends’ shady move. Both showed growth—Sky apologized for not discussing it, and Alex vowed to address his pals.

Reddit’s serving up opinions hotter than a jet engine!

Here's the input from the Reddit crowd:

One Redditor didn’t mince words, pointing out that the travel perk was tied to a shared plan—and once that changed, so did the deal.

AsOctoberFalls − NTA. You were letting them use the discount because they were going on a trip with your boyfriend. When they changed the details of the trip and excluded your bf, they forfeited their right to the discounted tickets.

Another commenter cut right to the heart of it, emphasizing that the discount was an act of goodwill extended because of Alex, and without him, the offer simply doesn’t stand.

Wikidess − NTA I’ve become friends with his two best friends (James* and Noah*) but we’re not particularly close nor do we ever hang out without him. You were clearly doing this for Alex.

If they want to exclude Alex, they can forget about the discount that *his* girlfriend was kind enough to bring to the table.

This commenter called out the hypocrisy loud and clear, arguing that if anyone’s being petty, it’s the friends who ditched the boyfriend but still expected the perks that came with him.

Fayne-rocks − NTA - some may see that as petty, but honestly, I would have done the same. They were just as selfish by excluding your boyfriend because of a concert.

They got most of the work (holiday planning) done for them, kicked your boyfriend off the vacation, AND expect a reward (discount) for it in the end? Uhmmm, I don't think so!

emanresuelbaliavayna didn’t hold back, calling out the friends for their audacity—pointing out that they cut Alex out of the trip yet still expected to benefit from the perks he arranged through his girlfriend.

emanresuelbaliavayna − NTA. Alex planned a trip with his friends and Alex worked out their free airfare with you.

IMO, assuming they could still use your benefits after moving the dates and effectively cutting him out of the trip is along the same lines as assuming that he would still pay for things he would have paid for.

To add insult to injury, these assholes want you to still supply their free flights so they can afford to go to the concert that they screwed Alex over to go to. That is beyond fucked up.

Alex is probably torn because his 'friends' are pulling every string they can to manipulate him into thinking he still owes them a free trip. AND you only have 3 seats. If you let them use 2, there wouldn't be enough for you an Alex to go somewhere on his off time. Why should they be prioritized?

You are 100% NTA if you stand your ground and don't give these selfish dickbags your benefits.

IndianaCrash raised a sharp question, highlighting the irony that the friends planned to use your discount to afford a concert they deliberately excluded your boyfriend from.

IndianaCrash − So ... with the money they would save from having your discount, they will be able to go to the concert by excluding your bf ?

Another Reddior brought an insider’s perspective, noting that no flight crew would recommend giving buddy passes to people who could embarrass you—especially when those people have already shown such blatant disrespect.

[Reddit User] − NTA. Any FA (or other crew) would tell you not to let someone who might embarrass you use your buddy passes bc it reflects on you. I wouldn't risk it with people who are such obvious jerks.

Arch_girl stood firmly in your corner, stressing that you didn’t break any promises—they changed the plan and left your boyfriend behind, so expecting special treatment afterward is just plain absurd.

Arch_girl − NTA. You didn't go back on your word. They decided to ditch the vacations with your boyfriend, knowing he couldn't move his vacation time. How they think they are entitled to anything after that is absurd.

Ailyana kept it short and clear, reminding everyone that the friends backed out first—so any consequences that followed are entirely on them.

Ailyana − NTA- they backed out first.

funkydunk- chimed in with support and curiosity, urging for an update while pointing out that once the friends changed the terms, your obligation vanished—and so did any claim they had to your generosity.

funkydunk- − Please update us OP. NTA. They changed the terms of the deal, not you. You’re no longer under any obligation and you do not owe them anything.

SirEDCaLot laid it out logically, emphasizing that the original offer was meant for a trip with Alex—not a solo getaway for his so-called friends. Since they cut him out, your obligation ended, and frankly, Alex might want to rethink who he calls friends.

SirEDCaLot − NTA. You offered your remaining THREE passes so Alex could take his friends on the trip. This was only partially for James and Noah, it was for Alex too- you wanted the 3 of them to have a good time together. They decide they want to go it alone and not have Alex there. Fine.

At this point it's a James and Noah trip- Alex no longer has anything to do with it. Therefore, you have no more obligation to either of them.

It sounds like you are still happy to fulfill the original deal- if the 3 of them want to travel together, you will provide the discounted airfare (as you promised). Thus, you are still keeping your promise of providing 3 discounted tickets for Alex James and Noah.

Besides, changing the trip without talking to Alex was a total d**k move. I suggest Alex should reconsider whether these people are worthy friends.

Are they soaring with wisdom or just turbulence?

Sky’s saga is a bumpy flight through loyalty and letdowns. She yanked her discount from Alex’s flaky friends, sparking a debate: was she standing up for love or being too quick to pull the plug?

Should Alex have backed her play, or was he right to play peacemaker? How would you handle friends who ditch your partner?
