She Put Her Feet On His Chair, So He Made Her Regret It For Two Hours

by Charles Butler

in Social Issues

There is an unwritten code of conduct in movie theaters: don’t talk, don’t text, and absolutely do not put your gross bare feet near a stranger’s head. It seems simple, yet every weekend, someone breaks the rules.

One moviegoer decided that when the polite approach failed, and even the ushers couldn’t help, it was time to deliver some “vigilante justice” of his own. His method wasn’t loud, but it was definitely uncomfortable.

Now, read the full story:

She Put Her Feet On His Chair, So He Made Her Regret It For Two Hours
Not the actual photo

This girl in the theater had her feet up on the back of my friend's chair?

I was out to a movie with my friends last night. We come and sit down, and I realize pretty soon that this girl in

the row behind us has her feet up on my friend David's seat. She's there with one of her friends.

So David turns around and he says something like, "uh do you think you could put your feet down?" And I think

they say something in response but I didn't hear it. The feet didn't go down. A few minutes later David says,

"hey, will you get your feet off my chair? It's extremely rude." And they still don't budge. So I tell David

that he should go find an employee and get them to talk to this girl. He does exactly that, and after a couple minutes an employee comes

and talks to this girl. She is obviously pretty peeved but begrudgingly agrees to put her feet down.. After the employee leaves, she puts her feet right back up.

At this point I'm pissed off. Why is it so important to you that you have your feet up on someone's chair? You're just being a brat.

So I get out of my seat, walk up two rows, sit down in the seat directly behind this girl, and stick my foot on the back of her chair

and push it forward. They both turn around and try to say something to me, but I can't really hear them since the movie had started by this point,

so I just say "just watch the movie." I kept my feet up there the entire movie. It felt like I had done walls sits for two hours but I'm...

Sometimes, you have to fight pettiness with pettiness.

We have all been there. You pay nearly $20 for a ticket, buy the overpriced popcorn, and settle in for some escapism, only to have your experience ruined by someone who treats a public theater like their private living room. It is infuriating because it feels so disrespectful.

The OP’s reaction is a classic example of “tit-for-tat.” He tried the polite route. He tried the official route (the usher). When those social contracts failed, he decided to speak the only language the girl seemed to understand: physical discomfort. Was it mature? Probably not. Was it satisfying to read? Absolutely.

Why Bad Theater Etiquette Triggers Us

The frustration here isn’t just about feet; it’s about the violation of shared space. When you are trapped in a dark room with strangers, you rely on everyone following the rules to feel safe and relaxed.

According to a 2023 survey by YouGov, the OP is definitely not alone in his annoyance. The data shows that 79% of Americans find “putting feet up on the seats in front” to be unacceptable behavior. It ranks right up there with talking and texting as a top grievance.

Yet, despite the consensus, bad behavior is on the rise. A separate poll by Merchoid found that a staggering 87% of moviegoers have encountered bad manners on recent trips.

So why did the OP’s revenge feel so good? It comes down to the psychology of “altruistic punishment.” As explained by researchers in the American Psychological Association, humans have a wired desire to punish social defectors, even if it costs us something (like two hours of leg cramps).

“Revenge is a strong emotional force mobilizing people to take action… [it] activates the reward center of the brain.” — Science of People

In this case, the OP was willing to suffer physically just to ensure the “social rule breaker” faced consequences. It is a primitive, but effective, way to enforce order when authority figures fail.

Check out how the community responded:

Some users preferred “Biological Warfare.” These Redditors shared revenge tactics that are frankly stomach-churning.

DogfoodEnforcer - Luckily I haven't had it happen in a theatre, but have had it a couple times on planes. ..one time the person had bare feet.

I made a point to let loose the loudest and wettest sneeze of my life, all over their bare feet. That did the job.

fallen_angel_81 - Someone once did that to me. A women and her brats sat behind me and my boyfriend.

One of the kids took their shoes off and had their feet on top of my seat next to my head. I told the mother to

sort her kid out and she just laughed. We ended up moving seats because the smell was horrendous!

[Reddit User] - Happened to me once. I licked my hand and rubbed it on her foot. She said something and my only reply was

"sorry, foot fetish" she moved seats Edit: I didn't lick her foot. I licked my hand and rubbed it on her foot. I wouldn't lick a foot in public

dierebelscum - Years ago I was at the movies with a girl I was dating at the time. There was a dude behind us who had his feet up on...

either side of her head. We asked him to move them and he just ignored us, so the crazy chick takes a big mouthful of her coke and spits it...

Then he kicks her, right in the back of the head. I jump back there and lay the smack down and we all get ejected from the theatre.

Still to this day have never seen the second matrix film. dmhs. Edit: typo

For some, the response to rudeness is immediate physical retaliation or creating a scene.

strib666 - I usually just repeatedly slam the seat backwards, until they get the point.

[Reddit User] - A buddy of mine once took off and threw one of his shoes at someone who wouldn't quit talking during a movie.

MeinKeister - In eighth grade, a woman behind me refused to take her feet away from my seat. I asked her twice,

and she just laughed and said whatever. So I grabbed her little shoe and threw it onto the floor by the screen.

The theatre had flooded, and there was still about an inch or two of water on the floor, just taped off, so satisfying when it landed.

Then she dumped her popcorn on me, so I stood up and dumped mine onto her. It was ridiculous, we were both being a bit shrewish.

Awittyscreenname - Ninja assassin bro date took a turn for the worst when two goons sat directly behind myself and my friend in a remotely empty theatre.

The kicking begins, I ask politely for him to stop and he does. About the middle of the movie he begins to go at it again.

I ask once more to quit his s__[stuff]__, he tells me I should move. I call him an a__[jerk]__ and remind him I was sitting there

before he got into the theatre. He asks if I'd like to settle it in the lobby, I'm like 19 at this time and pretty pissed off

so I jump to my feet and make my way down. You know the hallway leading out of the movies are usually pretty narrow,

this d__[guy]__ decides to push me into the wall on the way out. So we get out into the lobby, he's in his mid 40s picking a fight with a...

He gets in my face, I knee him in his thigh, he went down. My friend and I book it out of there before we can get in any real...

I still haven't seen the end of that movie. I wish I had done something like you but I've always relied on my size rather than my brain.

Others used Psychological Tactics (or just better theaters). Sometimes, words cut deeper than actions.

UltravioIence - G__[osh]__ damn. I get pumped just reading this. I used to work at the theaters when Two Towers came out.

I really loved the movie, so I'd stay and watch it if I got out and it was near the helms deep battle. This was within the first week

so most nights still had a decent amount of people. Well there was a kid that would constantly be yelling at Frodo.

He was being a kid and it was kind of cute at first, but eventually it was annoying. I turned to the dad and asked him

if he could ask his kid to be quiet, we're all trying to watch the movie. He leaned forward and said "why don't you just turn around and watch the...

So I did. I was like 17. So after like 5 minutes, the kid hasn't stopped, so I turn around and look at him and tell him

"ive read the books, Frodo and Sam both die in the next movie" and got up and left before the dad could react, since the kid immediately

started looking like he was about to burst into tears. Not sure if he did since I pretty much got out of there as fast as I could but I...

otakop - Go to the concession stand and tell them she is recording the movie with her phone.

They will be immediately ejected from the theater and likely banned.

Lucifuture - Stuff like this is why I love the Alamo Drafthouse, they would eject the person after a second complaint.

Sephoenix - Pour drink on feet, claim it was an accident. Either that or "B__[witch], I asked you to put your g[darn]__ feet down! "

I dunno, I am really tired and can't come up with something witty :/ But I did like your petty revenge, OP.

seannzzzie - The movie theater near me just updated to couch style lazy boys and there is about 4 feet of leg room

between rows now. It's the greatest. Also makes movie cuddles 100x better.

amd2800barton - In summer I carry a small AAA sized flashlight in my pocket that puts out 200 lumens in a fairly tight beam (compared to your cell phone at...

In winter i carry a 1000+ lumen 18650 sized flashlight. Turn either of those on (especially the big one) in someone's face in a dark theater and it shuts them...

It's an especially appropriate punishment for people in front of you who can't put their g__[darn]__ phones down the first time I ask politely.

[Reddit User] - Good for you man. My wife hates it but I'm a no non-sense type of guy at movies. Have your phone out and refuse to put it...

I'll just stand in front of you. If it escalates too far, I tell the manager to either remove the assholes or give me a full refund.

How to Navigate a Situation Like This

Dealing with rude strangers in a dark, loud environment is tricky. The “OP method” worked, but it carries the risk of escalating into a real fight. A safer approach is the “Three Strike Rule.”

Strike one: Ask politely. Strike two: Get an usher. If the behavior continues (Strike three), do not engage further. Go straight to the manager and ask for a refund or for the person to be ejected. Most theaters would rather lose one rude customer than refund an entire row of angry ones.

If you really want to avoid confrontation, consider voting with your wallet. Theaters like Alamo Drafthouse have built their entire brand on a zero-tolerance policy for talking and texting. It might cost a bit more, but the peace of mind is worth every penny.

So, the consensus seems to be that the OP was in the right to defend his friend’s personal space.

What do you think? Was pushing her chair for two hours a fair punishment, or should he have just moved seats?
