She Spent Thousands Creating Her Brother’s Dream Wedding, But Her SIL Repaid Her by Attacking Her Child

in Social Issues

Family conflicts can become incredibly painful when children get caught in the middle.

Especially when a parent realizes they may need to choose between keeping the peace and protecting their child.

Redditor OP thought she was doing something generous by hosting her brother’s wedding and helping him start his married life.

Everything seemed perfect until strange accusations about her daughter’s behavior at her grandparents’ house started appearing.

What began as concerns about bullying eventually uncovered a much bigger issue involving manipulation, hidden resentment, and a family relationship falling apart.

Scroll down to see why OP decided to set a difficult boundary.

'AITA for not giving my brother a wedding gift and refusing to let my daughter visit my parents when his wife is there?'

My (35F) brother “Ben” (30M) married his girlfriend “Jessica” (29F) in the

summer. They hadn’t saved much for a wedding, but they were deeply in

love and didn’t want to wait to get married. So, I offered to host the

wedding at my house. I have a large, beautiful backyard with mature trees

and a perfect setup for pictures, so it seemed like a perfect way to help

them have a nice ceremony without the huge cost. I didn’t just offer the

space. I got ordained so I could officiate the ceremony myself and save

them the cost of hiring someone. My teenage daughter and I spent five to

six weeks making decorations and flower arrangements by hand (I work full

time and my daughter attends school, so we worked on everything during

evenings and weekends). We set up tables, arranged chairs for the

ceremony, and prepared the entire backyard for the event. I paid for all the

materials and decorations myself. One of their friends offered to be the

photographer but they didn't have a videographer, so I set up the only

thing I had, a stationary camera set in a central location to record the

ceremony in 4K with a 360° view so they would have a full recording of

their wedding. I even arranged a large TV so they could play a photo

montage celebrating their relationship.

Our parents paid for the cake, drinks, and a few additional things Ben and

Jessica specifically wanted. They also paid for the buffet-style food. Ben

and Jessica only brought some treats and sweets. Jessica’s family lives in

another state and they aren’t close, so none of them contributed

financially and none of them attended.

Before the wedding, I had only met Jessica twice, but she seemed nice and

perfectly reasonable. I honestly believed everything had turned out

beautifully and that everyone was happy.

On the day of the wedding, everyone arrived and Ben, Jessica, and I went

over the ceremony details. I then showed Jessica upstairs so she could

change and touch up her makeup while the guests took their seats. When

everything was ready, I went outside and explained to the guests how the

ceremony would proceed. Jessica walked down the aisle and looked

absolutely stunning. Everything was perfect.

After the ceremony, I went back to preparing the reception. Checking table

settings, arranging the food, and setting up the TV so everyone could

watch the montage they had prepared. When the wedding ended, I packed

up the leftover food and gathered all the decorations into boxes. My dad

and Ben moved the arch, the leftover food and drinks, and the decorations

to their truck. I said they could keep everything since I didn’t plan to reuse

any of it (I only have one sibling and I'm already married), and thought it

would be nice for them to have it as keepsakes from their wedding.. A

couple of months later, some strange things started happening.

My daughter sometimes visits my parents on weekends. She's been doing

this since she was born. During those visits everything seemed normal

while she was there. But afterward my parents began calling me with

concerning stories. They said Jessica had told them my daughter had been

bullying her kids and behaving very disrespectfully. Jessica has two

daughters from a previous relationship, one about my daughter’s age and one a few years younger.

Now, my daughter can sometimes be a little intense. She’s an only child and

can occasionally come across as spoiled, but she has never bullied anyone

and has never been disrespectful to my parents. My parents are older and

have some medical issues that limit their mobility, but they’ve never had

any trouble supervising my daughter. These problems only started after

Jessica's kids had been added to the mix. According to what they had been

told, the incidents supposedly happened late at night after everyone had

gone to bed while my daughter and Jessica’s kids were sharing a room.

After hearing these accusations multiple times, I decided we needed a

serious conversation. I invited my parents over so we could talk through

everything in person instead of piecing it together through phone calls and

texts. I told them that if my daughter truly was behaving this badly, I

wanted to get professional help to figure out what was going on and stop

it. During that discussion we carefully went through the details of the

incidents. Afterward, we started paying closer attention to what was

actually happening.. Eventually the truth came out.

Jessica had been fabricating most of the story. She would provoke my

daughter until she got upset and then secretly record videos that were

completely black, only capturing the audio of my daughter already upset or

crying. Even in those recordings it was obvious Jessica kept pushing and

provoking her. On top of that, Jessica’s kids had been taking my daughter’s

belongings and hiding them, then pretending they knew nothing about it.

When confronted, Jessica didn’t apologize. Instead, she doubled down and

claimed my daughter “deserved it.” According to Jessica, me and my

husband had been “stingy” because we didn’t give them a wedding gift. In

her mind, that meant she had no reason to be kind to the daughter of

someone she considered a cheapskate. She even said that sooner or later

my daughter would have to face the reality of the world and it was better

for my daughter to learn now that the world doesn’t owe her anything and

that not everyone will treat her with respect.

What makes this even more insulting is that my daughter had spent weeks

helping prepare for that wedding. She helped make the flower

arrangements, helped paint and decorate the wedding arch, arranged

seating, and after the wedding she helped clean up while Ben and Jessica went home.

Yes, we didn’t hand them cash. They had told guests not to bring physical

gifts and instead give money to help them start their life together. But we

hosted their entire wedding at our home and paid for all the decorations

and materials ourselves. They never reimbursed us for any of it, and we

never asked them to. I genuinely believed that hosting and organizing their

wedding was already an incredibly generous gift.

Ben has been stuck in the middle of all of this. He tries to mediate and

acknowledge both sides, but it’s obvious he doesn’t know how to handle it.

He doesn’t want to upset his wife, but he also doesn’t want to hurt me. He

keeps saying he loves both of us and just wants peace in the family. I

honestly feel bad for him. But I’m still furious with Jessica. Because of her

lies, I started questioning my own daughter and even considered taking her

to a specialist to deal with behavior problems that didn’t actually exist.

It also seems very clear that Jessica resented us because she knew we were

financially better off than they were and had expected a generous cash gift for their wedding.

Because of everything that happened, I told my parents that my daughter

will not visit their house when Jessica or her kids are there. I don’t think it’s

healthy for my daughter to be around someone who deliberately

antagonizes her and then lies about it.

Unfortunately, this has created even more tension in the family. My parents

watch Jessica’s kids while she works, and they’re usually there on

weekends since both Ben and Jessica work then. And now, some relatives

say I’m being unfair and preventing my parents from seeing their

granddaughter. Others say I’m overreacting and that now that the truth is

out, my daughter should be allowed to visit again while my parents can

supervise. But some family members believe I’m right to protect my

daughter from someone who has already shown she’s willing to manipulate

and target her.. At this point, I honestly don’t know.

So AITA for not giving my brother a wedding gift and for refusing to let my

daughter visit my parents house while Jessica and her kids are there?

UPDATE: Hi everyone, I just wanted to post a quick update (if I didn't do

this correctly, I apologize. I never posted an update before) and say thank

you to everyone who took the time to comment and share your

perspectives. Reading through your replies really helped me slow down,

reflect, and look at everything more clearly from different angles.

To add a few things: Our family has always been very loving, and I’d say my

brother and I were “raised right,” so to speak. We’ve never really had

anything like this happen before, which I think is part of why it took me so

long to fully recognize what was going on. Also, the events in my original

post didn’t happen all at once. This has been building over multiple

months. Basically since last summer until now. It started off small and

gradually escalated. Looking back now, there were probably red flags along

the way, but at the time they felt so unlikely and unbelievable that it was

hard to process and have a clear view of them.

A few details I found out since my first post and to answer common

questions: the father of Jessica’s kids lives in another state. I’m honestly

not sure how she handled childcare before my parents got involved. From

what I understand, her custody situation is still ongoing. They recently had

a court date and have another one coming up. Because of her claims of

abuse, the court has ordered that the kids stay solely with her for now.

Jessica has told my parents that her ex (they were never married) was

abusive to both her and her kids. She even showed them voicemails where

he threatened them. While my parents haven’t taken “sides,” they do feel

deeply sorry for her and have been trying to give her and her kids the kind

of loving, stable environment she says she never had. I want to be clear, I

do have empathy for her situation. I can’t imagine living like that, and I

wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I also understand why my parents have gone

out of their way to support her. But at the same time, I don’t believe any of

that excuses what happened with my daughter. Her behavior toward my

child is still unacceptable. The explanation I was given for her kids taking

my daughter’s things is that they grew up in an environment where

nothing was clearly “theirs,” and they had to fight for everything. While I

can understand how that might shape behavior, it still doesn’t make it okay.

As for my brother, I truly believe he’s just trying to give the woman he loves

a safe and stable home, after everything she's been through. Somewhere

she doesn’t have to constantly be on guard or live in fear. That’s who he is.

Regarding the wedding costs, I honestly didn’t realize how much I had

spent until I sat down and added some of it up. Between getting ordained,

making sure all paperwork was solid, decorations, tables, chairs, etc., I was

already around $3,000 and only about halfway through, and that didn’t

even include a venue, tableware, or labor. It really shocked me. That said, I

did all of that for my brother. We’ve always been extremely close. We never

had a “golden child” dynamic or major conflicts growing up. We’ve always

supported each other, including financially when needed, without keeping

score. I realize that’s not how every family works, but it’s been normal for us.

Some extended family members (who don’t really know Jessica well) think

I’m overreacting. My parents, on the other hand, are sad about the

situation but do understand why I don’t want my daughter in that

environment right now. They’ve tried to come up with solutions, but it’s

been difficult with everything going on. Jessica traveling for legal matters

(knowing this, makes sense why she was adamant about getting monetary

gifts, doesn't excuse it, but at least I know the "why"), both of them working, etc.

Also, when I mentioned my parents’ mobility issues, I meant they have

difficulty going upstairs where the girls sleep. During the day, when

everyone is downstairs, there weren’t any issues. The behavior toward my

daughter only seemed to happen at night after my parents went to bed.

That's why they didn't know the full story.

I do talk to my daughter, and ask her about her visits every time. The

incident where she cried is what prompted me to sit down with my parents

initially. Before that, she hadn’t even been aware of the accusations being

made. She had mentioned the other girls taking her things, but she would

get them back after speaking up and telling my parents, so at the time it

seemed more like a sharing issue, especially since she’s an only child and

not used to that dynamic. This is what I meant by things escalating slowly. It didn’t go from 0 to 100 overnight.

Right now, I’m planning to have my parents and my brother over this

weekend. He’s on vacation starting Friday, but Jessica will be working. He’ll

bring the girls, and my husband will keep a very close eye on them while my

parents, my brother, and I sit down for a serious, detailed conversation. The

goal is to figure out a long-term solution that works for everyone,

especially the kids. They are innocent in all of this (or at least there is still time to change).

Again, thank you all for your input. It really helped me step back and see

things in a way I hadn’t before. And if anyone will be interested, I can post

another update after we had our conversation.

When someone goes out of their way to help family, they usually do it because they believe love is enough of a reason.

They are not keeping a scoreboard of expenses, favors, or effort.

That is why betrayal in these situations can feel especially painful: it is not just about money or a disagreement, but about realizing that an act of kindness may not have been valued the way you believed it was.

In OP’s situation, the wedding itself was only the beginning of the conflict.

She invested time, money, and emotional energy into creating a meaningful day for her brother and his wife.

The deeper wound came later, when she discovered that her daughter was allegedly being targeted because of resentment over a missing cash gift.

OP was placed in an extremely difficult position: she had to question whether she had failed to notice a behavior problem in her own child, only to later discover that the accusations appeared to be manipulated.

The emotional complexity comes from the fact that multiple things can be true at once.

Jessica may have her own painful history, financial stress, and fears from past experiences.

Her children may also have learned unhealthy behaviors from instability.

But understanding someone’s background does not erase the responsibility they have to treat others with care, especially a child who had nothing to do with adult disagreements.

A different perspective is that this situation may not only be about jealousy or money.

Sometimes people who feel insecure around another person’s resources, family support, or stability can develop resentment without openly acknowledging it.

Instead of saying, “I feel overlooked” or “I wish we had received more help,” those feelings may come out indirectly through criticism, comparison, or attempts to regain power.

In this case, targeting OP’s daughter would represent a serious failure to manage those emotions in a healthy way.

That perspective is especially relevant here because OP’s decision is not simply about punishing Jessica.

It is about removing her daughter from a situation where an adult may have already demonstrated a willingness to distort events and create conflict around her.

Children are often unable to understand complicated adult motivations, but they can feel when someone repeatedly makes them the target of tension.

At the same time, OP’s family may need to avoid turning this into a permanent war where the children become the center of adult conflict.

Her brother’s position is complicated because he is trying to support his wife while also protecting his relationship with his sister.

The healthiest path forward would require accountability, honest conversations, and clear boundaries before normal family interactions resume.

Protecting a child does not require hatred toward another person.

It requires recognizing patterns, taking concerns seriously, and creating an environment where the child feels safe.

Family connections matter, but they should never come at the cost of a child’s emotional security.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters prioritized protecting OP’s daughter from bullying and unsafe family dynamics

jyssrocks − If you let it keep happening now that you know, you'd be

deliberately hurting your child. "Keeping the peace" is never worth hurting

your kid. Keep standing strong. You're not causing tension, Jessica and her attitude are.

CeramicSavage − Don't ever let Jessica around your daughter unsupervised

again. Unfortunately, protecting your daughter means she can't stay at

your parents without you being around. It's just not safe for her. Any

woman who would be so vindictive won't stop there. She's definitely going to isolate your brother. Nta UpdateMe

Illustrious-Network5 − Not only did Jessica bully your daughter and try to

turn you against her, but she encouraged her own children to do so as well.

That is not acceptable. You need to take to task anyone who believes that trying to understand her is okay.

If she wanted to go after you because she thought you didn't do enough

(and how stupid is that, you should bill her for services rendered), then she

should've gone after you. Bringing your daughter into this crossed a line. Peace is over.

But the fact that your own family knows what happened and is still saying

you should let your daughter around her kids is nuts. Why is she still even

around? She literally targeted a child because she didn't like the fact that

their parent didn't give her a wedding gift (except you practically gave her

the whole wedding), and somehow everyone's okay with this?

Make it make sense. Sit your brother and grandparents down (Jessica can

stay home). Go over what Jessica did, and what she got her kids to do.

Go over the reason why she did it and bring a (physical, some people

understand better when they can hold it) list that includes all goods and

services you provided with a rough price of what they would've paid for

each one. Explain to them that while you still love and care for them very

deeply, your daughter has to be your first priority.

You will visit when you can, but you don't want your daughter to be around

Jessica or her children from here on out. And any attempt from someone

to surprise or force a meeting between them will result in that person not seeing either of you for some time.

You can consider laying the same boundaries regarding yourself as well,

but that might be harder if you want to try to have a relationship with your

brother. It won't be easy. It may not be pretty either. Whether it's your

family or Jessica and her children, someone's going to get upset.

Someone will probably try to guilt you into giving in to preserve the peace.

But it's now what needs to be done. Because your daughter shouldn't have

to put up with that cruel woman anymore. And neither should you.

Medical_Mountain_895 − I'd never be around nor allow someone around

who would bully a child and try to film her to get in trouble,  felt so entitled

to my money,  who s__t on the wedding you made possible.   Tell your

parents she can find new child care if they want to see their grandchild.   I

wouldn't choose fake grandkids who bullied my real one.

That's like condoning all of their behavior and would take it very badly.

This group argued Jessica was ungrateful despite receiving major wedding support from OP’s family

hazelnuddy − NTA Send her an itemized bill of everything you and your

daughter did for their wedding. Then ask her why $xxx wasn't enough of a

gift for her? The audacity of that woman to bully a child and encourage her

own children to bully her over her own ungratefulness! EDIT: left out a word

Awkward-Economy5657 − NTA Sounds like Jessica is the one who's spoiled

and entitled. You and your family paid for their wedding because they

"had" to be married and couldn't wait to save for their wedding (although I

imagine she couldn't wait for the "money grab" of a wedding).

So instead of being grateful for all that you did, she thought it was ok to lie

and bully your daughter, I'm sorry your parents are in the middle of this but

I wouldn't let my daughter be near such a n__ty, greedy person as Jessica.

For the people who think you are in the wrong for not wanting your

daughter to be bullied, well they can have a talk with your brother about

his greedy wife or they can babysit her brats (who will grow up believing

it's ok to bully someone if they didn't get what they want).

JSam46 − Oh hell no. Jessica is very ungrateful and your brother Ben needs to step up and intervene.

It sounds like Jessica and/or her children tormented your daughter None of

that is cool and you gifted them thousands of pounds of a gift of venue

and wedding arrangements I’m at a los, like you are, at what more you

could have done to be the most added value/ most generous of siblings

IntrepidMuch − Your parents do not HAVE TO watch those kids. They

CHOOSE TO. That choice now means they are also CHOOSING not to see

your daughter. That is the entire story! ! There is something fundamentally

wrong with your new SIL so please keep her as far away from your life as you can.

As for your BIL, his not choosing a side is him choosing a side. He’s chosen

his wife. That your daughter has to deal with this crap is beyond

unfortunate. She has done nothing wrong and yet she gets all the

punishment. Those two awful girls and their mother get your daughter’s

grandparents. EVERYONE SHOULD BE PISSED ABOUT THAT!

These commenters criticized OP’s family for tolerating Jessica’s behavior and not defending the child

ragdoll1022 − Your parents need to tell Jessica they are done watching her

children. She ABUSED your daughter, their granddaughter IN THEIR HOME. Why are they accepting that fuckery?

ShelyChelle − Your parents and brother are pure assholes Ben doesn't want

to be in the middle? His POS wife terrorized his niece, and she had her

daughters do the same, OUT OF JEALOUSY! This really cannot be life! You

are soooo being to calm about this, I wouldn't speak to not 1 of them assholes, I'm so serious, this is bananas!

Its never okay for an adult to bully a child, then have their kids do it, all

because they don't have as much money as the child's parents. .. Nah, nah, nah!

OP’s story started with a generous act, opening her home and spending weeks creating a beautiful wedding for her brother but turned into a heartbreaking situation when that kindness was repaid with manipulation involving her daughter.

The biggest issue was never the missing wedding gift; it was Jessica deliberately provoking a child, recording only the aftermath, and creating a false narrative.

Protecting a child from someone who has shown they can harm their emotional well-being is not cruelty, it’s parenting.

Do you think OP is right to set strict boundaries, or should she allow more chances for family unity?

How would you handle a relative who targets your child? Share your thoughts below!
