She Thought Her Husband Was Cheating, Until She Discovered Something Much More Heartbreaking

Depression does not always look like sadness. Sometimes it appears as someone quietly convincing themselves that disappearing would make life easier for everyone they love.

That belief can be devastating, especially when it comes from someone who is deeply cherished.

A 28-year-old mother says she discovered a secret her husband had been hiding while looking through his phone before Christmas.

What she found was not an affair or a betrayal, but evidence that he was preparing to take his own life months later.

Terrified of losing the man she had loved since high school, she began making sure he never doubted his importance in their family.

She encouraged him to seek therapy and stayed committed to showing him affection every day.

Keep reading to see how one frightening discovery became the reason she fought even harder for her husband.

'I stopped my husband from committing suicide and he thinks I never knew his plans?'

My husband and I are 28. We have 3 kids. He’s the only boyfriend I’ve ever

had. He’s been with me since high school.. He’s always had low self esteem. I do too, but not like he does.

One day, we got new phones, maybe 7 years ago, I found out I can read

his texts. He can see mine too, but he didn’t know about it. This

happened for like another 2 years. For his birthday and Christmas I’d

snoop around his texts and see if theres something he was talking about that he wanted.

One day, around November I was being nosey to see what I can get him

for Christmas. I was pregnant with our second child at the time.

I saw he was texting someone something suspicious, saying “where can

we meet” and I thought this was with another girl. I read them more and I found out he was buying drugs.

My husband and I don’t even drink, so I freaked out. I wondered about

how long this was going in for, if I even knew my own husband anymore.

Turns out he was buying something that doesn’t get you high, but kills you.

I looked around everywhere. I tore our room apart and didn’t find

anything. I went through the search history and all his emails on his

phone when he was asleep that night, and found o it he was making

arrangements for a specific date 3 months after I was due. He was

looking at life insurance, which we have had since I’m a stay at home

mom. He was even looking up how much t costs to be cremated. Once he

got home, the first thing I did was sneak his phone and text that guy and

say “I’m no longer interested, if someone else tells you otherwise it

means someone else has my phone” and deleted that guys number.

I didn’t want him to know I was snooping but the thought of my husband

not being around tore me. I remember being sick to my stomach and

bawling in our room just thinking of the idea of not having him around. I

love him more than life in itself. I would die for him and not even have to think about it. My husband is my entire world.

That day on I made sure he knew that, even if it meant embarrassing

myself. I started bringing him flowers at work almost everyday. When he

would come through the door I would screech with excitement and give

him a hug and a smooch and tell him I missed him so much and I couldn’t stop thinking about him all day.

When I was out with him how beautiful and handsome he is. When he

was around my friends I’d say “look at my husband. He’s so beautiful”. I’d

call him at work and ask how much longer until he’s home.. I got him to start going to therapy too.

One night I woke him up because I was freaking out and couldn’t sleep. I

told him I had a nightmare. I said I had a dream he passed away. He said

“why is that a bad thing?” And I told him how he’s my entire world and

other than our son, and our other on the way, he’s all I live for.

He said “but things would be better if I was out of your hair.” And I said

“no they wouldn’t. If you left me it would literally ruin my life.”

He said “not if you’re financially well off. You’ll be much better off” and I

said “I could have all the money in the world. It would mean nothing if I

didn’t have you. I’d much rather be homeless but still have you as my

husband than be filthy rich and you be gone.” And he said “are you

serious” and I said “100%. I’d sleep under a bridge if it meant I still got to sleep next to you”

He said “I didn’t know you felt that way” and I said “I really do.” I asked if I

could go with him to therapy. He said yes.

I told his therapist I think he has depression, and he admitted he might.

He got a prescription, and it seemed to help him a whole lot.

Even though it’s been 5 years i still do all those nice things for him, like

call him handsome and bring him flowers. I don’t ever want him to second guess for a second that he’s my sunshine.

Sometimes the most dangerous thoughts are the ones people never say out loud.

From the outside, this couple seemed to have what many people spend their lives searching for.

They had been together since high school, built a family, and had a partner who loved them deeply.

But underneath that picture, the husband was carrying something much heavier: the belief that his own existence was a burden.

That belief is one of the cruelest symptoms of depression.

People who struggle with severe depression often do not see themselves the way their loved ones see them.

They may look at their family and think, “They would be better without me.” They mistake their pain for reality.

The husband was not making a rational calculation about his family’s future. He was viewing himself through a distorted lens created by his own suffering.

The details of his preparation are especially heartbreaking because they show how serious the situation had become.

He was not simply having a bad day. He had reached a point where he was quietly planning a future without himself in it.

What changed the direction of that moment was not one perfect speech. It was connection.

His wife reminded him of something depression had convinced him was untrue: he mattered.

The way she expressed her love may seem simple to some people. Compliments, hugs, flowers, excitement when he came home.

But for someone who feels invisible or worthless, those small moments can carry enormous meaning.

She was constantly giving him evidence against the thoughts in his own head.

“You are wanted.”
“You are loved.”
“You are not a burden.”

Those messages can be incredibly powerful.

At the same time, this story also shows why love alone cannot always fix mental health struggles.

The wife’s support was important, but encouraging him to seek therapy and accept treatment was equally important. She did not simply try to love the problem away. She helped him get professional support.

That balance matters.

A partner can provide comfort, reassurance, and a reason to keep fighting.

But depression is an illness, and sometimes it requires more than reassurance. It requires care, treatment, and ongoing attention.

The most touching part of this story is that years later, she is still choosing to remind him of his value.

Not because she has to prove anything, but because she understands that people need to feel loved repeatedly.

Love is not always one grand moment.

Sometimes love is a thousand small reminders that say:

“I see you.”
“I choose you.”
“I am grateful you are here.”

For someone who once believed the world would be better without them, hearing that message again and again can change everything.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters celebrated the couple’s love and expressed relief that OP’s husband survived, describing the story as a reminder to cherish loved ones

mifeandwother − Excuse me. I need to go call my husband.

Iminian − May you both have many years of happiness to come :)

Jeena92 − This made me believe in humanity again. OP I wish you both

eternal happiness. Teary eyed rn Edit: You know how we all lost naive

optimism in the goodness of world as we grew up, that's the content that makes you believe again.

SamDublin − You are an angel from heaven, your husband is blessed.

captainlevi101 − W wife, im so glad he’s alive

Fine-Mail4400 − im not crying YOU are cruying stop ittttt :') im so happy

you saved his life. This was the perfect reminder for me to cherish my

husband more and be more appreciative <3 you are so awesome and a great wife <3

These users shared personal experiences with suicidal thoughts or emotional struggles

getitoffmychestpleas − Keep him talking about it if you can. For the

longest time I didn't want to scare my husband so I wasn't fully honest

with him about my suicidal thoughts. They don't just disappear, not for

me anyway, it's an ongoing battle. So in addition to saving his freaking life

you absolute beast of a wonderful wife, keep him talking.

Let him know you can handle it, that he can always depend on you, and

that if he needs more help you're in it together.

UnicornKitt3n − I’m currently 35 weeks with my third, and regularly have

these nightmarish “day dreams” of my husband dying. It’s f__king awful. I

too would rather be poor with husband, than rich without him. I love him

so much. I’m also someone who has lived their entire life with depression

with suicidal ideations. I have been in your husband’s shoes.

I have convinced myself that everyone would be better off without me.

It’s a horrible mind state to live in, and I think you’re doing amazingly with all that support. ❤️

JackHungary1234 − Dang. This got me. I was in a similar boat Christmas

2020. Your poor husband must have gotten to a place where he feels less

than worthless, a net detractor in life. I just remember somehow being

convinced that my kids and ex-wife would be better off without me. I

don’t even know how I could have gotten so beat down.

And it was me that convinced myself of worthlessness, not someone else.

I’m sorry that this is happening. But man are you a good wife.

Old-Refrigerator340 − I went for a long walk at 1am last week with half

intent on not coming home. My gf didn't even know I left she was too

busy being angry and drinking. I sat on a bench looking out over the

water for an hour. She hasnt even bought it up to me. You are a great supportive person.

This story is a powerful reminder that sometimes the people we love most can be fighting battles we never see.

The husband believed he was a burden, while his wife saw him as the person who made her life whole.

Her love, reassurance, and support helped him take the first step toward healing, but his decision to accept therapy was what truly changed the direction of his life.

Love can remind someone they matter, but lasting recovery also requires support, honesty, and the courage to ask for help.

Have you ever realized someone close to you was carrying a struggle they never showed?
