She Told Her Boyfriend a Strip Club Was a Deal Breaker. He Said Work Came First.

Every relationship has boundaries.

For some couples, they’re about finances. For others, it’s family, friendships, or how much independence each partner needs. But every so often, a disagreement comes along that forces two people to ask whether they’re actually on the same page about what commitment looks like.

That’s exactly what happened to one young woman after an innocent conversation about a strip club turned into a much bigger discussion about trust, respect, and where professional obligations end.

She isn’t accusing her boyfriend of cheating.

He hasn’t even been to a strip club.

But after hearing him say he would attend one if work colleagues or senior managers invited him, she found herself questioning whether they viewed loyalty in fundamentally different ways.

Now she’s wondering whether she’s being unreasonable for asking him not to go.

Here’s how it all unfolded.

AITA for not wanting my boyfriend to go to a strip club

But I don't know if I am overreacting, I guess lots of people in relationships go to stripclubs too. I don't know if I should be okay with this?

Am I the asshole for not wanting him to go?

The couple, a 21-year-old woman and her 23-year-old boyfriend, have been together for about a year and a half.

By her own description, the relationship has been healthy.

They rarely argue, enjoy spending time together, trust one another, and have even started talking seriously about a future together.

Nothing major had tested that trust until recently.

The conversation began after her boyfriend’s best friend visited a strip club for the first time.

According to her, the friend enthusiastically described getting private dances and admitted the experience left him wishing he had a girlfriend because, in his words, he missed having “boobs to grab.”

The comment immediately changed how she viewed him.

She said she suddenly felt uncomfortable around someone she had previously liked and respected.

That conversation also led her to discuss strip clubs with her own boyfriend.

She explained that she personally views them as degrading and, depending on the circumstances, close to a form of cheating.

The idea of her boyfriend intentionally watching other women perform nude or receiving private dances simply didn’t sit right with her.

Rather than arguing, she calmly shared her feelings and hoped they would see eye to eye.

Instead, she discovered they didn’t.

Her boyfriend told her he understood why she felt uncomfortable but didn’t agree.

Working in banking and finance, he explained that client entertainment and after-hours networking sometimes involve visiting strip clubs.

Although he had never been to one himself, he admitted he would likely attend if coworkers, clients, or senior management organized an outing.

From his perspective, it wouldn’t be about seeking sexual gratification.

It would be about fitting in professionally, building relationships, and avoiding the appearance of distancing himself from colleagues.

She wasn’t convinced.

In her mind, there are countless ways to build professional relationships that don’t involve partially nude entertainment.

She wished he would simply decline out of respect for their relationship.

At the same time, she wondered whether she was expecting too much.

After all, many couples don’t see strip clubs as a relationship issue at all.

Relationship experts often point out that disagreements like this are rarely about the venue itself. According to psychologist Dr. John Gottman, healthy couples don’t necessarily agree on every boundary, but they openly discuss their values, listen without becoming defensive, and work toward understanding each other’s perspectives rather than dismissing them.

That idea feels especially relevant here.

The disagreement isn’t really about dancers or even strip clubs.

It’s about what each partner believes demonstrates respect within a committed relationship.

Neither person appears to be acting out of bad intentions.

She isn’t trying to control every aspect of his social life. She’s expressing a boundary that genuinely makes her feel emotionally unsafe.

Likewise, he isn’t secretly planning nights out at clubs.

He’s describing a hypothetical workplace situation where declining an invitation could, in his view, affect professional relationships.

That doesn’t automatically make either person right or wrong.

It simply reveals that they may define loyalty differently.

The difficult part comes next.

Some relationship differences can be negotiated through compromise.

Others reveal incompatible expectations that neither partner should be pressured to abandon.

Whether that means agreeing to avoid private dances, leaving early if coworkers choose a strip club, or deciding the relationship simply isn’t compatible depends entirely on what both people are willing to accept.

Here's what people had to say to OP:

Many commenters concluded that neither partner was necessarily acting maliciously.

NAH: You’re allowed to have boundaries, and you’ve clearly communicated how you feel.

Now that being said, I’d like to take a sec to talk to you about Strip Clubs from the perspective as someone who WAS a Stripper for three years.

Strip clubs are no different than your BF watching porn, or using his imagination when he’s alone. It’s all a fantasy.

Most of us never found it degrading, and actually found it very empowering as women to control how we were being sexualized, and capitalizing on our beauty and charm. (Think...

The Strippers don’t want your man. Like at all. From my experience in the clubs I’ve worked at, most of us were married, in long term relationships, or gay. Strippers...

Now when it comes to private dances, the rules are different per country, and even vary from state to state/province. I was a ripper in Canada, so my experience is...

It depends on the girl if they allow touching or not. From my experience, we don’t touch customers if we don’t want to, and they aren’t allowed to touch us...

However, all that being said, if you aren’t comfortable, you aren’t comfortable, and that’s okay, but there is also room for compromise as well. Would it make you feel better...

Maybe talk to the girls who work at the club (and tip them! We don’t make hourly!!) and explain how you feel! A lot of us are mothers, students, wives,...

I hope this was helpful! Also, sorry for formatting, on mobile!

Several emphasized that everyone is entitled to establish personal relationship boundaries, provided they’re communicated honestly rather than imposed through ultimatums.

One particularly notable response came from a former stripper, who explained that most dancers view their work as a business rather than a romantic interaction.

meltyzucchini - NAH. You're allowed to feel uncomfortable about it. He's allowed to see it as a chance to prove himself as 'one of the boys'.

You don't have to feel okay with this, but conversely, he doesn't have to share your feelings about it.

Though, if you were to be invited to a bachelorette party that had male strippers invited, would you decline going for the same reasons you don't want him being there?

Long-term relationships aren’t built on identical opinions.

They’re built on understanding where compromise is possible and where personal values simply don’t align.

This couple isn’t arguing because trust has already been broken.

They’re trying to decide what trust should look like before that situation ever happens.

Sometimes those conversations are uncomfortable.

They’re also some of the most important conversations two people can have before building a future together.

What do you think: is attending a strip club for a work function simply professional networking, or is it a reasonable relationship boundary for a partner to object to?
