She Took In Her Traumatized Niece, but the Crisis Began Endangering Her Entire Family

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Taking in a child who has experienced abandonment can be an act of deep love, but love alone does not erase trauma or guarantee that a family knows how to handle every crisis.

Sometimes caregivers can give everything they have and still feel overwhelmed, frightened, and unsure of what comes next.

The original poster (OP) has raised her teenage niece for much of the girl’s life and considers her a daughter.

However, years of risky behavior, dishonesty, conflict, and repeated safety concerns have placed enormous pressure on everyone in the household.

Therapy and outside agencies have been involved, yet OP still feels unheard and unable to protect both her niece and the rest of her family.

Now emotionally exhausted and struggling with guilt, she is questioning whether continuing the current arrangement is truly helping anyone.

Read on to understand the painful situation she is facing.

Foster mother reaches her breaking point after years of trying to help her troubled niece

She Took In Her Traumatized Niece, but the Crisis Began Endangering Her Entire Family
not the actual photo

'AITA if I cut my losses and give up on one of my daughters?'

I don’t know if this is Reddit worthy but I am lost and I feel like I’m about to

snap if I haven’t already:

I have a niece I am fostering, she lived with me from 3yrs-8yrs and mom

wanted to be a mom again and took her only to give up a year and a half

later. In that year she influenced her so bad that I cannot get a grip on it.

She came back to me @10yrs and is now 13yrs. In that time she has

destroyed everything we buy her, had numerous BFs, lied about a bad

encounter, torn/cut shirts to look provocative, worn heavy makeup, cut her

own hair, shared our home location on social media to men, gotten on

social media through other people’s phone, wanted to marry little boys and

run off to Arizona, lied to people/public/friends about how we have her as

a prisoner in the home, cut her person, and so much more.

She is in therapy and due to the stress it has caused in the home, so are all

of us. I work from home and have a newborn so the sharing location has me

so nervous. But, the recent incident was when she got aggressive with a

teacher and demanded a little boy be removed from the class that lead me

to call CPS and explain that I can no longer do this. My family is saying I’m

an a__hole because they just don’t see it in her. That she is an innocent

victim of her mother’s abandonment and life style and I should have more

compassion, but I feel like I’m at my wits end. My daughters are mad I still

include her in family things when she has not earned it, or that I still buy

her stuff when she has been such a pain at the home. Also they are upset

and angry because the bad thing she lied about was my husband and thank

the lord she admitted it to the officers it was for attention because she

liked that her friends comforted her. She likes to be victim and will lie to

get the attention and create drama. It got to my kids friends and now they

are embarrassed to go to school.

We ask her all the time “do you want to be here” and she cries and says yes

but she tells her counselors that she doesn’t know why she does these

things.

It’s always one thing after another and we never rest in my home. We are

all girls in this home and now have to have cameras on all the time because

we don’t know who she shares our location too and send provocative

photos to. I’ve grounded her from phone, tv, snacks, everything I can think

of and she finds away to get it. I’m lost! Therapy is not helping and I’m

losing my family over a little girl who will not meet me half way. I’m so lost.

She has been diagnosed w/multiple personality disorder which is why my

family doesn’t see it, but they say I shouldn’t have token her in if I don’t

want her. I do! She my daughter! But, she’s damaging us and I’m lost, I don’t

know if I should cut my losses or keep going and I don’t have the energy for

it and I’m emotionally drained. I cry everyday and I’m so depressed already.

Maybe I just needed to vent, I don’t know. Is this my fault….

Update: I gave my therapist one more chance to say I need help because I

feel like I’m suffocating and he said the same thing, “if you cannot have one

child, all must be removed”. So I’m looking for another one because I feel

like he is not listening. I’ve spoken with her therapist and they called CPS

for a crisis and CPS refuses to assist because she is in a stable and safe

home. Next day again she cut more shirts, but! CPS said “well call the cops!”

So her therapist did. We made a report and will continue to call them to

make reports until CPS does something. It must’ve scared her because her

teachers say she has been very reserved in class. Because she refuses to

give me whatever scissors she is using, we have decided to lock our doors. I

found her father and grandmother, 😩 but they are druggies and the

father is in jail. So that’s a no go. Her therapist wants me to sign some

paperwork Tuesday and took all the reports down and asked about

parents, so hopefully we can get the facility going. She will be going to an

aunts house on weekends allowing us to breath and give some time to our

own kids since we have robbed some attention from them (they feel

ignored). I have explained that she needs help and she didn’t have the

upbringing they had and has demons she needs to fight. They seem to

understand but are understandably jealous. That’s our next thing to work

on while she is gone. I’m not perfect and I’m trying my hardest. I’m

emotionally exhausted. I cry when I’m alone, run out the stress, and just

trying to keep it together. I’m trying my best, I’m not perfect and I’m

f__king up my life and family royally but I don’t know what else to do. I will

update after the paper signing to see what is next. She cannot be removed

because she is not immediately endangering the family or harming herself.

If anything she is extremely smart and knows exactly what to say, she said

she didn’t want to be with me to CPS but told the cops she would never do

anything to harm people at home and loves her home and all of us. She

manipulated the cop but the counselor called her out when during the

interview she excused herself to the bathroom to change into short shorts.

Now she is mad at the counselor. But I’m glad they saw the behavior. Pray

for me.. Update. Update:

She hurt herself again so I did exactly what was advised to do and called

the crisis hotline. Nothing got better after the last issue because she

continued to be grounded; multiple BF’s, sending sexy pics to them, still

getting on the internet, wearing proactive clothing, and NOW caught with

vapes at school. She wasn’t expelled because she had it and didn’t do it and

the other kids admitted she knew nothing about it and THEY handed it to

her. Her counselor admitted her into a facility for 3 days but I was asked if

they could keep her for longer and I agreed. Not sure how she will come

back but we did find some hidden clothing in her room and I cleaned it

well. One thing that changed was her behavior after the last incident

towards the baby. She would stand over her while the baby was in her

walker and barely let her finger tips touch the babies fingers almost like

teasing her. Maybe I’m making a big thing about it but my daughters felt

the same way and don’t feel comfortable her being around the baby alone.

She has another sister but she is fixated that my baby is her only sister. It

makes me nervous but I’m watching. I hope and pray this facility helps her

in what she needs. Her father has asked me to send her but I do not know

him and he has been caught doing “bad medicine” 3 times and done some

serious time. He actually got aggressive with me on the phone so I blocked

him. She is talking to mom now and mom has told her to straighten up but

just ignores her when they hang up. I won’t lie I have been more relaxed

since she has been gone and I feel like I can breathe. Even my kids feel

good to be home and just chill. But only time will tell, I ask for prayers and I

will pray she heals. I know they changed her meds to depression and 1 for

psychosis not sure what she is telling them but thats all I know so far. She is

expected to be home some time next week.

Caregiver exhaustion does not mean a person has stopped loving the child in their care.

Sometimes it means the family has reached a level of crisis that affection, patience, and ordinary outpatient therapy cannot manage alone.

OP is not describing a difficult teenager who occasionally breaks rules.

She is describing repeated self-harm, unsafe online behavior, serious accusations, escalating conflict, and growing fear among the other children in the home.

The niece’s history matters.

She experienced separation, abandonment, unstable caregiving, and another major disruption when she returned to OP’s home.

Her behavior may reflect pain, fear, poor emotional regulation, or attempts to regain control and attention.

But understanding where behavior comes from does not require the household to ignore its consequences.

Compassion for one child cannot mean leaving a newborn and several other children feeling unsafe, neglected, or permanently on alert.

The family’s greatest mistake would be turning this into a contest over whether the teenager is an innocent victim or a calculating troublemaker.

She can be traumatized and still create real danger.

She can love her foster family and still behave in ways they cannot safely manage.

Describing every action as manipulation may overlook the distress beneath it, while excusing everything because of her history abandons the rest of the family.

The extended placement therefore should not be viewed as punishment or abandonment.

A higher level of care may be necessary when a child repeatedly harms herself, defeats ordinary safety measures, and destabilizes the entire home.

Any discharge plan should include a written safety plan, medication follow-up, restrictions around internet access and sharps, clear supervision expectations around the baby, school coordination, and specific instructions for another crisis.

OP also needs meaningful respite.

Federal child-welfare guidance recognizes that kinship caregivers, particularly those supporting children affected by trauma or disability, may require regular breaks, counseling, training, and other services to maintain a stable placement.

Weekend care with a trusted aunt is not selfish; it may protect every relationship in the household.

This is not OP’s fault, nor is love measured by how much chaos she can endure before collapsing.

Protecting the teenager may now require more structure and professional care than one family can provide at home. Protecting the other children matters too.

Sometimes refusing to continue an unsafe arrangement unchanged is not giving up on a child.

It is finally admitting that everyone needs more help than the family has been given.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters believed OP’s first responsibility is protecting her husband, children, and household

Raging_chihuahua − NTA. You tried. But she needs far more help than you

can provide. And your need to protect your husband and your other

children. You tried. It obviously did not work. If you and your family are to

have any peace you need to let her go.

Perhaps when she’s had more therapy and some wisdom and some years of

growing up you can let her visit you. But for now she needs to go to her

father’s family or another aunt or even a mental health facility. It sounds

like your family has been traumatized by her. That needs to stop. You can’t

save your niece.

But you can save your family.

Outside-Leek-5045 − You have tried. Your first responsibility is to your

children. As much as you love your niece this isn't working. Let someone

else in the family try. Then they will understand. I know your heart is breaking.

Glinda-The-Witch − NTA . Your first obligation is to the safety of your

children and your husband. Tell your family members that they are more

than welcome to step up and take her in and until they have lived with her

and dealt with her behavioral issues they get no opinion. . do what’s right

for you and your family.

These commenters recommended exploring professional placement options

Sufficient_Big_5600 − I work at a group home for teenagers, and there are

many reasons why the kids are here. Sometimes, the adoptive parents try

so so so hard to help their kid- but the parents are not professionals. Talk

with a caseworker about what solutions are available for the girl to be

placed elsewhere.

When the girl asks why, be honest and tell her that she is beyond your help.

Be honest. Let her, and her caseworker, and her counselors work through

it. If it’s possible for you to be a phone call she can make, then yay. But if

you both need time and distance then that’s okay, too.

As to family guilting you- then tell them they can have a turn with her.

jjj68548 − The lying about being s__ually abused by my husband would be

the line in the sand. Other family members can take her or she can go into

foster care/group home. That’s not something to be taken lightly especially

with the police and CPS involved. You need to think about your other

daughters and husband.

Front_Quantity7001 − Would her therapist agree to place her inpatient

until they are able to get a medication that will be effective to her? At 13,

she could become pregnant

These commenters considered the false accusation against OP’s husband a decisive breaking point

MD7001 − My god I’m so so sorry this is happening. Unfortunately there

isn’t any good solution. This child is deeply damaged & frankly at this point

dangerous to your family Has medication been suggested? NTA. If your

family is so concerned they can take her in. Next time they say something

that you should be your response As to the child? That’s impossible to know.

If medication doesn’t help, then to me your only option is CPS. You simply

can’t allow her to destroy your family. I do wish you the best

Ginger630 − NTA! Why aren’t your other relatives stepping up? ! Why is this

your responsibility? This is hurting your kids and your household. You other

kids’ could be in jeopardy if CPS is called. So could your job. You’ve done

what you could for her. Someone else needs to help her.

After-Presentation56 − NTA. For your sake, for your families sake, and for

her, she needs to find somewhere else to go. She is acting out in general

because she knows its bad and loves the attention. You can't help someone

who won't help themselves. Maybe some day she'll realize that.

And if the rest of your family says that you should have more compassion,

tell them that they can offer to take her in. But seriously, NTA for cutting

her loose.

These commenters criticized OP for allowing the situation to destabilize her children’s home for so long

Unlucky-Captain1431 − You have to place the peace of your home and

make your daughters your priority. I feel terrible for your children. They are

going to resent you and their upbringing. Most of the damage is done. Cut

your losses with this girl and salvage your family with therapy.

CheezersTheCat − there’s a bunch of flags here… assuming you’re in the

US a preteen diagnosis of multiple personality disorder is incredibly

INCREDIBLY rare, almost to a point where it would bring the dr who did it

under a review… I’m not saying it ain’t happening I’m just saying there’s

some questionable s__t happening with whoever’s handling her emotional care.

And if the young lady is creating this much friction inside your own family

dynamic it isn’t even on her anymore… it’s on you. Cause for some odd

reason for feel the need to be a saviour figure so badly that you’re willing

to damage your immediate family to do it.

OP might be the one that really needs to seek counselling cause that kinda

self destruction is coming from somewhere other than “do the right

thing”… Girl needs to be surrendered, OP needs to get some therapy

about why she needs to white knight that badly that her own kids don’t

factor… and her kids need a stable family dynamic… the prblm child isn’t

the prblm… OP, you are.

YTA

When someone takes in a child who has experienced abandonment and trauma, love alone does not always erase the damage left behind.

The OP clearly wants to protect her niece, but years of instability, risky behavior, and constant crises have pushed the entire household to the edge.

Many people sympathized with the child’s painful past while also recognizing that the OP’s other children, newborn, and mental health deserve protection too.

Do you think seeking outside placement was giving up, or was it the responsible choice for everyone involved?

How would you balance compassion with keeping a family safe? Share your thoughts below!
