She Was Humiliated at Her Best Friend’s Baby Shower, Then Pulled Off a $500 Gift Card Revenge

by Leona Pham
August 16, 2026
in Social Issues

Sometimes, a friendship can look perfectly normal on the surface while one person quietly holds resentment underneath.

The truth can become even more surprising when you discover what was being said about you when you were not around.

The original poster (OP) thought she had a close friendship with her maid of honor, Marlene, even though there had been some strange comments about OP’s marriage.

Years later, an unexpected encounter at Marlene’s baby shower revealed that OP may not have been viewed as a friend at all.

What happened afterward left OP with a rather unusual opportunity to settle the score. Read on to see how she handled it.

Woman discovers her longtime friend secretly mocked her, then quietly plots revenge after being humiliated at the friend’s baby shower

not the actual photo

'My MOH apparently resents me and my husband for reasons I didn't understand. She broke my heart, so I made her lose friends?'

My MOH Marlene (36F) was a close friend of mine. I was born in the US but

grew up in Japan. We permanently moved back to the US over a decade

ago so I didn't have any friends around but it didn't bother me much since

I'm very introverted. We met just a year after I moved when 1 of my friends

introduced us on FB, so she and I clicked right away. We didn't see much as

I'm an introvert therefore I enjoy my own space, and she has her own circle

but we became good friends. This will be important later.

6 years ago, I (33F) got married to my husband (let's call him Luke) after

just a few months of dating. I asked Marlene to be my MOH and she

accepted. I should've put things into perspective but I could tell she wasn't

happy about my upcoming marriage. She would say things like "are you

sure about this?" or "dude, he's white". We're Asians (she's Filipina and I'm

Chinese-Japanese). Bruh. Anyway, we got married. The ceremony was

really memorable. Everybody was happy, or so I thought.

Fast forward October 2020, I found out she was pregnant and was due

March 2021. I was so happy for her. She never told me once that she was

dating, and I was so surprised to know that she was seeing this guy at the

time I got engaged. I asked why she never told me but she said she just

wasn't sure about him. Sounded fair, right? Since it was COVID19 times, she

sent me an invite for her baby shower on February 2021 and I was happy. I

offered to help her for the party but she said her other friends got it

covered. 1 week before the party, she told me that since it's still COVID19

period, they decided to cut down on the people attending. I understood

since I was rona paranoid too, so I told her I'll drop off my gifts to her and

her baby, and boxes of diapers and she said her husband Ed will meet me at

the corner of the street about a block away from their house. I thought it

was weird but ok. I drove there, waited for 30 mins (I texted and called her

multiple times) and Ed didn't show up. I just thought they were busy so it

didn't bother me. I ended up going to her house and to my surprise, there

was a lot of people there. I knocked and Ed met me at the door. He said

sorry because he was busy cooking for the party and I said it's ok. He

apparently was cooking for over 50 people (Filipino parties are big). I was

just gonna drop off the gifts and leave until one of Marlene's friends came

and said something that absolutely sent chills down my spine. In Tagalog,

she asked if I was the "cheap girl who married the white guy" that they

were talking about and Ed responded "yep, it's this fat chick" and they

started laughing in front of me. I pretended not to understand, but I left

smilingly. I realized at that point that I was just uninvited.

One thing Marlene didn't tell them is I'm a polyglot. I fluently speak

Mandarin, Japanese, English, and Tagalog was the latest language I've

learned because of COVID and I had so much time in my hands since I was

working from home. I was shaking but I went on with my life. She sent me a

text explaining that in case I was wondering why there were a lot of

people, it was because people didn't receive the message right away, I said

it's fine and "no harm done". Didn't even thank me for the gifts but at that

point, I didn't care. I was numb. I didn't text her from then on.

7 months later, she sent me an invite to her wedding. I said we regretfully

decline because of our work but we'll mail her our wedding gift. On the

invite, I saw that she assigned her friend from the baby shower (let's call

her Fatima) to receive the gifts at her place because their house is a mess

from all the baby stuff. I had a light bulb moment. I told Marlene that I'll

mail a $500 gift card to Fatima's place and she said thanks. Took a photo of

the gift card along with the greeting card, and sent her the photo of the

stamped envelope with the mailbox as the background and told her to be

on the lookout for it. She confirmed the address.. I didn't mail it.

I kept the GC and ripped the scheisse out of the envelope. Fast forward day

after the wedding, she tried calling me, asking me if I mailed the GC

because she is looking for my gift and couldn't, and I said yes. She said ok

and I was laughing deep inside. Days later she called me and I answered.

She said she and Fatima had a huge fight and she accused her of stealing

the gift card. They blew at each other, and it all ended in Fatima throwing

out all the gifts from the house and breaking some of the gifts. I acted like I

was disgusted but I wanted to laugh. She asked me if I could go back to the

store and block the card but I told her I'll do what I can. We ended the

phone call and Luke noticed the grin on my face. I eventually told him

everything and he was shocked that I never told him anything about all of

these. He was sad and upset considering he spoke to her on our wedding

day, but at the same time, he thought I went too far with the "stolen gift

card" ploy. I know this isn't a question of AITA, but a case of I know I'm THE a**hole.

I haven't spoken to her since then. She asked me a couple of times to go

out for lunch but I told her I'm busy.. Lessons. Don't assume people can't

understand what you're saying, and don't be a sh*tty friend.. UPDATE:

I would like to express my thanks for everyone's support and I really

appreciate it. I want to answer some of the questions raised on my post. It's

hard to reply to everyone so I'll just do it all in comment. Also, I don't think

I'll update on this since I chose to go NC with Marlene. I wish everyone the

best and please, don't be sh*tty "friends".. 1. What do they mean by "cheap"?

As I have mentioned in one of my replies, I just assumed that they mean I'm

an undignified woman who chose to marry a white guy to save me from

poverty, a common stigma towards Asian women who marry someone of

different nationality as theirs, especially white guys. I supported my

husband's final year of education and I earn just fine. I'm now pursuing my

dream of becoming a nurse. Him and I clicked because we're Star Wars and

LOTR geeks plus we love Marvel movies. We fell in love because of that.. 2.

What happened to Fatima and Marlene?

Like the title said, they did have a falling out. Knowing Marlene who loves

to assume sht, I knew telling her that I mailed the GC that she'd believe me

at my words. Until the day I heard Ed and Fatima craptalking about me on

my face, I've always been nice so I think it never crossed her mind that I can

orchestrate something so cunning. It didn't even cross her mind that it

could've been lost in the mail or I didn't send it at all. Fatima had enough of

the indirect accusations of theft so she lost it and told them to pick their

gifts and store them somewhere else. Apparently, Marlene and Ed went to

her place and demanded that she load up the gifts to their truck to "pay

off" for the GC and Fatima ended up throwing their sht out of the

apartment. She told me she was gonna press charges for breaking her stuff

but I didn't follow up on that, not that I care. Some of her friends defended

Fatima and quit talking to her. To be clear, I never gave Marlene hints that

maybe Fatima stole it, she just ASSumed. That's Marlene for y'all.. 3. Why was Luke upset?

He was upset because he thanked her for being a good friend and she told

him to take good care of me because I'm "special". He gave her a Kate

Spade purse to thank her that she gladly accepted. He genuinely wanted to

be friends with her and Ed, and even told me that we should invite them

once in a while for dinner after we found out she was engaged. We did and

they always declined. Everything made sense to him after I told him

everything. He didn't expect that I could pull something like this, but

understood why I did it.. 4. What happened to the GC?

Nobody asked about this but I'll tell you anyway. It was a visa GC and I

surprised Luke with a weekend in Honolulu where we stay at the HHV so

that basically became additional vacation money. I uploaded photos and

Marlene commented that it was her dream to have her honeymoon there

especially in that hotel, which I genuinely didn't know because we never

spoke about her wedding. I kinda felt bad actually but here we are. Marlene

contacted me a few times to ask me out for brunch or coffee but I

gracefully declined, telling that I'm very busy with work and school. I know

she wants to meet me not as a friend, but to see if I canceled the GC and if I

could give her another one to replace that one that got "lost". She expressed this to me lol.

Being betrayed by a friend can hurt in a strangely personal way, because friendship is built almost entirely on voluntary trust.

There is no obligation to stay, no family tie requiring contact, and no contract demanding loyalty.

So when someone who once stood beside you deliberately makes you feel small or unwelcome, the pain can be surprisingly profound.

For OP, Marlene’s behavior was not one isolated slight. It was a gradual collapse of trust.

Marlene questioned her marriage, excluded her from the baby shower while apparently allowing dozens of others to attend, and then allowed her husband and friends to mock OP to her face.

OP’s decision to retaliate with the gift card was undeniably deceptive, but it also appears to have come from accumulated humiliation rather than spontaneous cruelty.

She had already swallowed the insult and walked away quietly. The revenge became her private way of reclaiming some power.

A fresh perspective is that OP’s most revealing choice may not have been the fake gift at all, but the fact that she never confronted Marlene.

Some people respond to betrayal by demanding an explanation; others simply withdraw and quietly close the door.

OP seems to belong to the second group.

Her introverted personality may have made the silent exit feel safer than an emotionally exhausting confrontation.

The gift-card scheme, however, gave her something she otherwise lacked: a sense that she could finally control the narrative.

That insight makes OP’s reaction easier to understand without excusing it.

She had invested years of friendship and even showed generosity toward someone who had apparently been privately dismissive of her.

The eventual revenge did not repair that betrayal; it simply gave OP a temporary feeling of justice.

The fact that the gift-card lie ultimately contributed to another friendship exploding shows how quickly retaliation can spread beyond the original conflict.

There is also something quietly sad about the ending. OP kept the gift card and used it for a trip with Luke, while Marlene apparently continued trying to reconnect.

Yet what OP seems to want now is not another confrontation, apology, or victory. She wants distance. That may be the healthiest part of her response.

The useful lesson is not “never get revenge,” but recognizing when revenge has stopped being satisfying and started keeping someone emotionally attached to the person who hurt them.

OP had every reason to walk away from a friendship that no longer felt respectful.

The challenge is making sure the final chapter is genuinely about moving forward, not continuing to write new chapters about what Marlene deserved.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters cheered OP’s petty revenge and supported cutting off the toxic friend

Mountain-Paper-8420 − I think it was perfect petty revenge. Especially

since they talked s__t about you right in front of you. It sucks that someone

you considered a friend would treat you like that. At least you now know

not to spend any more time or energy on this person. IMHO NTA

B00B00K1TTTY − NTA, she sounds like a s__tty friend and your better off without her.

CatMama67 − Yes! !! The petty is strong in you, and I’m totally here for it! Love your work.

2880cjk − NTA. Your supposed friend Marlene was definitely a horrible

person to you. I am glad that you were able to be true to yourself by saying

goodbye to that person. Stay Petty Queen. I loved your story.

These Redditors argued that OP did not cause the consequences and blamed the friend’s own assumptions

EvilGreebo − You didn't make Fatima throw away or break those other gifts.

You didn't make your supposed friend assume that Fatima stole the card

instead of it simply getting lost in the mail. Those were s__tty assumptions

made by those two, which fits because they were pretty s__tty people to

begin with. You moved in the shadows, not the a-hole.

naliedel − Fatima did it on her own. Never gossip about people in another language. They might speak it

SkepticAquarian876 − ! [gif](giphy|2lozkZo93pKfm48xfl) You have every

right to do the Gift Card plot. She had you waiting forever around the

block, just to drop off a gift for her and child. If you hadn't gone to the

house you wouldn't have known what type of person she and her family really are.

That comment they made at the door, let you know that she has been

talking shyt about you from day one and was never your friend. She was a

taker and not giver in your relationship. I hope she doesn't get fat after

having her child. Btw. . being polyglot is such a 💪🏽 flex. . I love it for you.

🤗 Luke needs to get over your petty revenge, because we are here for it.

Block and delete her. She is not worth the space in your phone or on your social media.

These commenters believed the friend had been judgmental and disrespectful toward OP from the beginning

Efficient_Wafer_9438 − I dont understand why she ever called you cheap

anyway which makes me wonder what she really thought of you at the

beginning of your friendship coupled with the fat comment. Girl! It's like

you never really knew her. Sucks. Live your best life.

JBluHevn − As a Filipina, I deeply deeply apologize for the behavior some

of my fellow Filis have. I am very familiar with their type. The ones with the typical crab mentality.

On the surface they call Asians who marry non-Filipinos "cheap" when

behind the scenes they would snap up any AFAM (a Foreigner Arriving in

Manila/ general slang for foreigners) who takes an interest in them and milk he or she for money for the whole family/clan.

I am in an interracial marriage, and even I am wary about being in the

presence of other Filipinos with my husband. I was even once asked why I

married my husband and not a Filipino guy. I told them they wouldn't be interested in my essay of an answer.

While I do feel you were mean about the gift card, I would cough find

myself doing the same thing to someone who spoke so low of me behind my back if able. kiki

AppropriateRip9996 − I don't understand why string along someone you

don't like as a 'friend' when you really don't like them. You insult them. You

don't include them. I guess honest conversations are too painful.

Marlene thought she could quietly humiliate OP, but accidentally picked the one friend who could understand exactly what was being said.

Being excluded from the baby shower was already hurtful, especially after OP had gone out of her way to bring gifts, only to overhear Marlene’s friends mocking her marriage and appearance.

OP’s decision to fake mailing the wedding gift was undeniably petty, and the fallout was messy, but it also exposed how little respect existed in that friendship.

Do you think OP’s revenge went too far, or was it a satisfying consequence for a friendship that had already turned toxic?

Would you have confronted Marlene instead? Share your thoughts below!
