She Was Told She Wasn’t His Parent, So She Finally Stopped Doing All the Parenting

in Social Issues

For ten years, this woman had quietly taken on much of the responsibility for her stepson. She made his appointments, remembered his medication, bought his clothes, kept track of his routines, and reminded him to shower, change clothes, clean up, and get enough sleep. She did it because she cared about him, not because anyone formally asked her to become his second mother.

But whenever she tried to have a say in important parenting decisions, she was reminded that she was “not his parent.”

Eventually, something clicked.

If she wasn’t considered a parent when decisions were being made, why was she expected to carry so much of the responsibility? After years of carrying the mental load, she decided to hand the parenting responsibilities back to her partner. It was a decision that caused tension, but it also forced her husband to realize just how much she had been doing.

Here’s the OG Post:

AITA for Not Including My Step Son in My Mental Load Anymore?

My step son is 13 - he comes to us every weekend and 75% of the school holidays Me and his dad have been together for 10 years.

In this 10 years it has been up to me to make his appointments, keep track of his appointments, make sure he takes his medications, make him change his clothes...

Clean up the mess he leaves behind when going back to his mums, clean up his belongings left around the house while he is here. When I first met him...

I would send him back in these clothes to his mums and ask her to send him in them the following week

(this didn’t happen- she sent him in clothes too small for him) eventually all the new clothes I bought for him were at his mums house and we had a...

So I replaced them all and said what his mum sends him in he will go back to hers in.

We recently bought him a new wardrobe again as he has put on a significant amount of weight. (Neither of his parents want to address his eating habits and I...

My partner said he should be able to wear these clothes to his mums as he wants him to have nice clothes there.

I said it’s not our responsibility to be clothing him at both houses. This didn’t go over well and I said to my partner he can do as he pleases

but in a few months when we have no clothes that fit him anymore I’m not going and buying him a whole new wardrobe again.

I also get told I’m not his parent when I say things like

‘we should take his phone off him at night because he is awake until 3-4 am on his phone and it’s affecting his school work’

‘We need to check his phone to make sure he is being safe online’ (he has a passcode on his phone that neither of his parents know)

‘he is 13 and should be able to tidy up after himself now and we need to teach him these things for when he is an adult’

I have come to realise if I am not counted as one of his parents, why should I be doing all the little things that his parents should be doing...

I told my partner from now on all the responsibility of a parent for his son is now his responsibility. (I have been since asking him to tidy up any...

I am still cooking, cleaning his clothes and washing the dishes he uses, making sure he has the food he enjoys in the house

So AITA for not including my step son with my mental load anymore ——————————————————————————— Very quick update - just talked to my partner while step son took our son to...

My partner has agreed he was wrong in saying I’m not his parent and said I am indeed his parent and he apologised for saying that to me.

He says he forgets a lot of things but is currently writing down all the things he needs to keep on top of - making a chart for when both...

He is also going to talk to his ex about her house and has said if she cannot change we will have step son come live with us. And he...

I told him about my mental load and his said he wasn’t aware it was that much I was dealing with.

He suggested he take over cooking and taking the garbage out, changing the cat’s litter tray and hoovering.

He said he will make sure step son and son have all the clothes they need (but tbh I like taking them shopping.

I had the first experience with step son where me and him went shopping and apart from him asking me what size he needs he picked all his outfits himself...

He apologised and said that step son sees me as his mum and he looks up to me a lot and he acknowledged how much I do for him.

He will be taking over any appointments needed which is hopefully for now just the dentist as no longer need CAMHs with the recent diagnosis and

medication for his IBS seems to be working so just need to keep up with that - which he has put alarms in his phone so he can remind him...

The phone situation I explained how it is about safety and he was shocked by some stories. He said he will get his code later and tell him he will...

Also talking about internet safety with him (I also reminded him he needs to have ‘the talk’ and he said he will do that with him)

Plans are he will talk about it later on tonight when the youngest is asleep.

Thank you so much for all your advice and opening my eyes to a lot of things. It was very helpful. Will see how things go.

For Years, She Was Doing the Work Without the Authority

The woman, 55, has been with her partner for ten years. Her stepson is now 13 and spends every weekend and about 75% of school holidays with them.

Over the years, she gradually became responsible for the everyday details of his life.

She booked and tracked appointments. She made sure he took his medication. She reminded him to shower, wash his hair properly, change clothes, and clean up after himself.

She also bought him clothes.

When she first met him, she purchased an entire wardrobe. But because the clothes kept disappearing to his mother’s house and weren’t returned, she eventually had to replace them with clothes that actually fit.

Recently, the boy had gained significant weight, so they bought another new wardrobe.

That created another argument.

Her husband wanted their son to be able to wear the new clothes to his mother’s house because he wanted him to have nice clothes there. She disagreed. She didn’t think they should repeatedly pay for two households’ worth of clothing when the clothes they bought were never returned.

But the clothing issue wasn’t really the biggest problem.

The bigger problem was that she was carrying responsibilities that came with being a parent while being told she wasn’t allowed to act like one.

When she suggested taking her stepson’s phone away at night because he stayed awake until 3 or 4 a.m., she was told she wasn’t his parent.

When she suggested checking his phone to make sure he was safe online, she was again reminded that she wasn’t his parent. Neither of his biological parents even knew his passcode.

She also felt strongly that a 13-year-old should be learning to clean up after himself and become more independent.

Again, she felt shut down.

At home, she was already raising her six-year-old and handling essentially all of the household chores herself. The mental load was becoming exhausting.

So she finally made a decision.

If she wasn’t his parent, she would stop doing the parenting work.

She told her partner that from then on, everything involving his son would be his responsibility.

She would still cook, clean, wash his clothes and dishes, and make sure there was food he liked in the house. But she stopped reminding him to shower, stopped cleaning up his messes, and stopped managing his appointments and medication.

The Conversation Finally Changed Everything

The situation might have continued that way, but the couple eventually sat down and talked.

Her partner admitted that he had been wrong to repeatedly tell her she wasn’t his parent.

He apologized.

More importantly, he finally realized how much she had been carrying.

He began writing down everything he needed to manage, including appointments, medication, showers, and other routines. He planned to talk to his son about cleaning up after himself and take responsibility for his parenting.

He also offered to take over several household tasks, including cooking, taking out the garbage, changing the cat’s litter and vacuuming.

For the first time, it seemed like the responsibility was becoming shared instead of silently falling onto her.

He also agreed to address the situation with his ex. If she couldn’t provide an appropriate environment for their son, he said they would consider having him live with them and involving social services if necessary.

There was even a surprisingly sweet moment.

The woman explained that she actually enjoys taking her stepson shopping. During one recent shopping trip, he chose his own outfits and only needed her help figuring out his size.

She was proud of him.

That detail made it clear that stepping back from the mental load didn’t mean she stopped loving him.

What Experts Say About Stepparent Boundaries

Family researcher Lawrence Ganong, Ph.D., writing for Psychology Today, explains that healthy stepparent relationships often begin with connection and caregiving, while questions about discipline and parental authority need clearer boundaries. He notes that stepparents can become important, trusted adults without necessarily replacing a child’s biological parents.

That distinction fits this situation surprisingly well.

The woman wasn’t trying to abandon her stepson. She had spent a decade caring for him. What she needed was clarity. If her partner wanted her to function as a parent, then she needed to be treated as a partner in parenting decisions too.

Instead, she had been caught in the worst possible middle ground: responsible when something needed doing, but apparently not responsible enough to have an opinion.

The update suggests her husband finally understood that contradiction.

Here's what people had to say to OP:

Several pointed out that her partner and his ex had effectively outsourced the day-to-day parenting to her while still reminding her that she wasn’t the parent.

Impressive-End241 − NTA. So the child's parents want to use you for all the labor, but none of the actual raising. You sound more like a nanny.

I don't blame you for stepping back. If they don't want you to make parenting decisions, then you won't do any parenting labor. Tell them their conditions are accepted.

WinstonWilmerBee − NTA, but also KINDLY talk to your stepson. Be very clear about what’s happening in a way that doesn’t blame him.

“[stepson], you’re getting older. Your mom and dad have asked me to step back, because THEY are your parents who make the decisions. And I agree with that! I’m going...

I WILL still make dinner for you, take care of the household things, and I am still here for emergencies. I am still an adult who cares about you, but...

[my kid] is still little, so I will do those things for them until they’re older. ”

Illustrious-Onion329 − NTA. Frankly it’s a decision you should have made the first time you were told that you aren’t his parent.

cocoaiswithme − Of course NTA. The fact is you have been doin too much if they have been telling you you're not his parent.

This is something you and your husband should have heavily discussed. Why wasn't HE parenting his child! ? Why wasn't HE buying him clothes or making appointments! ? You have...

ValkyrieTxHzLeyes − NTA. And I would consider asking yourself why you want to stay in a relationship like this. Your partner seems content with you doing all the work as...

He obvi isn’t raising him if you’re the only one thinking like a parent being mindful of his weight and how phone use can impact school and sleep cycles. His...

Others encouraged her to maintain a loving relationship with her stepson while allowing his biological parents to take responsibility for appointments, discipline, medication, clothing and other major decisions.

Quantity-Fearless − NTA it sounds like you are a married single parent. What does your partner even bring to your life? ? Why are the chores and responsibilities split so...

emmathedonut − NTA they can’t tell you “ you’re not the parent” every time you try to parent and expect you to do all the parenting work. That’s not how...

Ok_8890 − Im a stepmom. If I was ever told I’m not his parent I would be out. You should have stopped when they first said this. Obviously NTA. Let...

duskdoll − NTA - his parents should be doing all of those things and it seems you are only a parent when convenient for your partner and not a parent...

Leave it up to your spouse and just continue to have a friendly step parent role, include the child in what you are doing and make them feel comfortable when...

Hoplite68 − NTA. I think the time to reconsider this relationship has come. By the sound of it your partner expects you to pay for and keep his son organised...

While it is sad that a child is being wilfully failed by both parents, its been made abundantly clear that's not your problem. The only issue that remains is why...

The most encouraging part of this story isn’t that the woman stopped parenting her stepson. It’s that her husband finally understood why she had reached that point.

She didn’t stop caring about the boy. She stopped accepting a role where she was expected to do the work of a parent without being treated like one.

And perhaps that’s the real lesson here: family isn’t only about who has the biological title. It’s also about who shows up. But if someone is expected to keep showing up, they deserve respect, support, and a voice too.

Was stepping back the right boundary, or should she have handled the parenting responsibilities differently?
