She Worried Her Reaction to Her Boyfriend’s Kink Had Driven Him to Suicide

Grief has a cruel way of turning memories into evidence.

After her boyfriend died by suicide, one woman found herself returning again and again to a conversation they had about his sexual preferences. It happened roughly six weeks before his death. At the time, she thought she was simply being honest about something that made her uncomfortable.

Now, she cannot stop wondering whether she had hurt him more deeply than she realized.

Her boyfriend had struggled with depression before, but neither she nor his family saw obvious warning signs before his death. In his suicide note, he did not explain why. He simply wrote that he hated himself.

That one sentence left her searching for an explanation.

And eventually, she found herself blaming the conversation.

She Worried Her Reaction to Her Boyfriend’s Kink Had Driven Him to Suicide

'I feel like I killed my boyfriend?'

TLDR: I made my boyfriend feel guilty for his kink and I feel like it made him spiral, leading to his suicide

My boyfriend took his own life a few months ago. We (me and his family) knew that he sometimes suffered from depressive episodes, but we didn't know it was this...

There were absolutely no warning signs, not even the usual that he used to get with his bad epsiodes. None of us can find any obvious reason why he did...

However he wa always very self critical and hard working. In his suicide note he gave no reason bit said he hated himself

. Which is so so painful because he was an absolutely wonderful person, caring, loving, always helping, always taking care of me, incredibly humble, smart, funny.....

I cannot stop thinking about something I said to him about 1.5 months before it happened.

We had a great s__ life and our chemistry was amazing, and we did a little bit of bdsm, but I always thought he did that to please me and...

I don't remember how this topic even came up, but I wanted to know what type of porn he watches, so he showed me.

I honestly didn't think about this before, but when I saw he was watching 'rougher' stuff my first reaction was something like disgust and disappointment.

We are both very feminist, and realizing he watched women basically being used, abused and degraded (doesn't matter that it's 'consensual) was shocking to me.

I didn't start a fight or anything, I just told him I need a minute to cope and try to figure out what I'm feeling. Then I went to talk...

This man never cried, only ever if I was feeling really sad or so, but then he did cry, saying he didn't want me seeing him that way, like he...

I assured him I'm not, that this didn't change how much I loved him and all and that he is an amazing person, and that it's not his fault he's...

The day after I brought it up again, just reassuring him that this didn't change anything, I love him etc.

However I can't help thinking that this hurt him deeper than he let on and that it gave him so much self h__red that it pushed him over the edge.

I've already talked to two therapists about this, obviously they tell me that guilt is normal and it isn't my fault, but doesn't help me knowing that theres a very...

It hurts me so incredibly much to know how much he must have been hurting, and having to live the rest of my life without this angel of a man...

I'm not spiritual but he was as close to a 'soulmate' as I could have ever wished for.

He is all I ever wanted and I hurt him so much that he chose to leave us all behind. I don't know how to ever get over him, and...

I've been in therapy for years and have had many sessions since this happened and I can't see me ever letting this go.

She Thought She Was Being Honest About Something That Upset Her

The couple reportedly had a strong relationship and a healthy sex life. They also experimented with BDSM, although the poster had always assumed her boyfriend participated mostly because he enjoyed pleasing her.

Then one day, she asked what kind of pornography he watched.

He showed her.

She discovered that he sometimes watched much rougher BDSM material involving domination, degradation, and simulated abuse. Her immediate reaction was disgust and disappointment.

That reaction frightened her boyfriend.

She did not scream at him or start a fight. Instead, she told him she needed some time to process what she had seen. Later, she explained why it bothered her and told him that she did not see him as a monster.

But she also admitted that she would prefer if he stopped watching that type of pornography.

He agreed.

The next day, she brought the subject up again because she wanted to reassure him. She told him she still loved him and that her feelings about the pornography had not changed how she saw him as a person.

At the time, she believed she had handled an uncomfortable conversation as carefully as she could.

After his death, however, every detail became suspect.

She remembered him crying and saying that he did not want her to see him differently. She remembered him being afraid that she thought he was disgusting.

And now she wondered whether those words had planted something terrible inside him.

Grief Turned One Conversation Into a Suspect

The poster knew her boyfriend had depression. She also knew he was extremely self-critical and tended to be hard on himself.

That made the question even harder.

What if the conversation had hit an already fragile part of him? What if he had interpreted her reaction differently from what she intended? What if her reassurance had not been enough?

She had already spoken with two therapists, who told her that her guilt was understandable but that his suicide was not her fault.

Still, reassurance had not stopped the thoughts.

This is one of the most painful features of suicide bereavement. When someone dies without leaving a clear explanation, the people left behind can become desperate to find one.

And sometimes, the mind chooses the smallest detail because a specific cause feels easier to understand than the terrifying reality that there may never be a complete answer.

What Experts Say About the Complexity of Suicide

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasizes that suicide is not caused by one single factor. Its research describes suicide as the result of multiple biological, psychological, interpersonal, environmental, and social influences that can interact over time. The CDC also notes that depression and other mental health conditions can be important factors, while relationship difficulties, physical health problems, financial stress, substance use, and other circumstances may also contribute.

That matters enormously in this situation.

The woman knows one conversation happened. She does not know what was happening inside her boyfriend’s mind during the weeks that followed. She cannot know whether he connected the conversation to his self-worth, whether his depression was worsening independently, or whether there were other struggles he never revealed.

The American Psychiatric Association also notes that survivors of suicide loss commonly experience guilt, shame, depression, and trauma-related symptoms.

In other words, her guilt is real, but guilt is not proof of responsibility.

She can regret the way she initially reacted without turning that regret into a verdict that she caused his death.

Reddit Tried to Pull Her Out of That Spiral

Reddit had plenty to say about this one.

Most commenters strongly rejected the idea that she had “killed” her boyfriend. Several pointed out that suicidal thinking is usually connected to struggles that existed long before one difficult conversation. One commenter described suicide as something that can involve an ongoing internal battle rather than one isolated event.

Others reminded her that she was allowed to have complicated feelings about her partner’s pornography. She did not shame him intentionally, and she went out of her way to reassure him afterward.

There was some criticism of her reaction, particularly her discomfort with consensual BDSM. But even commenters who disagreed with her perspective generally did not believe the conversation explained his death.

One response put the emotional problem particularly well: she was taking one painful moment she wished she could undo and giving it responsibility for an outcome she could never have predicted.

That seemed to be the heart of the discussion.

She was not trying to excuse herself. She was trying to find the moment where everything went wrong.

Here's what the community had to contribute:

nachoyacho − I've never commented on this page before but I feel as though this situation is very. . grey? i should explain.

You had a valid reaction with your feelings and concerns and thats to be expected, there is nothing wrong in this.

You’re taking one moment you regret and making it responsible for an outcome you couldn’t control or predict. You’re responsible for your words.

zillabirdblue − I feel like you’re searching for a reason to blame yourself. It’s not your fault.

Final Thoughts

There may never be an answer that satisfies her.

She loved him. She remembers him as kind, funny, caring, intelligent, and deeply devoted to her. That is the person she is afraid of losing twice, once in reality and again by rewriting their relationship around the final tragedy.

Her reaction to his pornography may have hurt him. She is allowed to regret that. But hurting someone’s feelings is not the same as causing their suicide.

The hardest thing for her may be accepting that love does not give us complete access to another person’s pain.

Sometimes, the most honest answer is also the most painful one: she loved him, she wishes she had known how much he was suffering, and she may never know exactly why he chose to die.
