Sister Demands Equal Kitchen Access, Then Refuses the One Rule Protecting Her Sibling’s Health

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Sharing a home means agreeing on rules that protect everyone who lives there.

But when one person has a serious medical need, what looks like a preference to others may actually be a basic safety requirement.

The original poster (OP) and her girlfriend planned to create a gluten-free kitchen because even small amounts of cross-contact can make OP very sick.

Her girlfriend agreed and would keep any gluten snacks in a separate area outside the kitchen.

When OP’s sister asked to move in, however, she objected to the arrangement and argued that paying equal rent should give her unrestricted access to the kitchen.

OP offered alternatives, including keeping gluten foods and separate equipment in her sister’s room, but the disagreement continued.

Read on to see whether OP’s boundary was reasonable or unfair.

not the actual photo

'AITAH for expecting my kitchen to be completely gluten free?'Me and my girlfriend are planning on moving in together in January, and

we have agreed to have a completely gluten free kitchen because I am

allergic to gluten. Even cross contact with gluten makes me very sick. She is

not allergic to gluten, so she will have a small drawer set next to her desk

that will hold all her gluten snacks, and thats where she will eat them, not

using our dishes or kitchen for it in any way. No one will be allowed to bring

gluten foods into our home. This is the agreement we made, and the rules

we set together for our home.

A couple weeks ago my sister mentioned wanting to move in with us. I told

her thats fine with me and we'd have to talk to GF first. I then told her that

our kitchen is also going to be gluten free, and she freaked out. She kept

going on about how I currently live in a gluten kitchen (ignoring the fact

that I still get sick every day from it), and why can't I just keep doing what

I'm doing now?? I told her that she could have as much gluten stuff as she

wanted in her room, and we could even set up a little kitchenette for her in

there if she really wanted, but the kitchen and mine and my gf's dishes will

remain gluten free, and if she brought her own dishes, she would be

expected to hand wash them instead of using the dishwasher.

She brought up that we'd all be paying the same rent, and that she should

get to use the kitchen as much as we do, and I said she could as long as

theres no gluten in what she's making. I can see how she thinks its unfair,

but this is about my health and safety. I don't want to continue being sick

every day from cross contamination. I'm not telling her she needs to give

up gluten completely, just that she needs to keep it out of our kitchen.

At this point, I'm tempted to tell her that if she can't respect my health

needs, then she can't move in with us, but I want to know if I'm being TAH

or not, so AITAH?

EDIT: Thank you to everyone who has replied and given advice. I accept that

I'm TAH for the way I handled the conversation with my sister and telling

her I'd have to talk to my gf first. I will be telling her that I am changing my

mind on her moving in and that the answer is no because of her refusal to

keep the kitchen safe for me.

For those of you who say my allergy isn't real, idk what to tell you, my

medical chart says "Gluten Allergy". I'm not a doctor, I'm assuming you

aren't either. Whether or not something else is wrong with me, it doesn't

change my medical needs.

And for those who say I'm controlling my girlfriend and am being toxic or

manipulative, she suggested the gluten free kitchen. I currently live in a

household that has gluten, and I get sick every day from it. She doesn't

want that to keep happening and wants to have the gluten free kitchen so I

can be healthier. This is a discussion we had as an adult couple with healthy

communication, and if something changes in the future, we will have

another adult discussion about what needs to change. She likes the food

we make together, and we enjoy trying new brands together and finding

new foods to eat. I'm not forcing her to do anything. What works for my

relationship may not be what works for yours, and thats okay, but that

doesn't mean that we're wrong.

A safe home is not defined only by whether everyone pays equal rent.

It is also defined by whether the people living there respect one another’s health, boundaries, and basic ability to use shared spaces without becoming ill.

In OP’s case, the proposed gluten-free kitchen is not a lifestyle preference or an attempt to control what other adults eat.

It is a safety measure created by OP and her girlfriend for their future home.

OP’s sister was not being asked to stop eating gluten entirely.

She was offered space for packaged snacks in her room and even the possibility of a small private kitchenette.

She would still be allowed to cook in the main kitchen, provided the food and preparation remained gluten-free.

That is already a significant attempt at accommodation.

Her objection appears to be that equal rent should guarantee unrestricted use of every shared space, but shared housing always involves agreed limitations.

People accept rules about smoking, pets, noise, allergens, cleanliness, and overnight guests because one resident’s freedom cannot come at another resident’s expense.

Cross-contact is a legitimate concern for people who medically require strict gluten avoidance.

That guidance supports why OP does not want to recreate the environment in which they currently become sick.

A dishwasher, shared cookware, and ordinary food preparation can introduce repeated opportunities for contamination.

Even though the exact medical diagnosis should remain between OP and their healthcare professionals, the practical need is clear: exposure causes illness, and the couple has agreed to prevent it in their home.

The one mistake OP made was suggesting that the sister could probably move in before fully discussing it with the girlfriend.

This would be their shared home, so both partners needed to agree before an invitation was offered.

However, recognizing that mistake does not mean the sister is entitled to move in under conditions that endanger one of the residents.

The sister’s reaction also provides useful information before any lease is signed.

If she is already arguing that OP should continue becoming sick because the current situation is technically survivable, she is unlikely to treat kitchen rules with the seriousness they require.

Once someone moves in, enforcing boundaries becomes far harder.

OP is therefore reasonable to withdraw the offer.

The sister is not being denied housing she already possesses, and she is free to choose a home without dietary restrictions.

OP and their girlfriend are equally free to create a kitchen where OP can prepare food without fear.

Accommodation requires compromise from everyone.

It does not require the person with the medical vulnerability to accept preventable illness so another adult can enjoy unrestricted toast.

Here’s the comments of users:

These commenters strongly advised OP not to let the sister move in because she is unlikely to respect the gluten-free rules

cthulularoo − NTA, she will definitely use gluten in your kitchen even if she

promises not to. Don't let her move in, simple as that.

boxesofboxes − Don't let her move in. She's proven she won't take it

seriously with her reaction, she might even intentionally contaminate it to

"prove" you're ""overreacting"". Don't mess around. Retract the offer. NTA

IllReplacement336 − Sister needs to find another place. She will not

respect the boundaries you and your girlfriend have set.

YogurtclosetVast3118 − don't let he move in. this will not end well for you.

Better to be safe!

These commenters emphasized that food allergies are serious health issues and should never be treated as optional preferences

copiedfurby − I can’t eat pork - it makes me break out in hives and my

throat closes up. I once had a room mate who used my pans to make bacon

without telling me and sent me to the ER. I sent him a video of me putting

his cast iron skillet in the dishwasher while he was at work the next week. NTA.

Don’t play around with food allergies.

Tastes_Like_TRex − NTA. You don't owe her compromising your health-

related rules at all.

StrangledInMoonlight − She brought up that we'd all be paying the same

rent, and that she should get to use the kitchen as much as we do You are

all paying the same rent, and you deserve not to be poisoned every time

you eat in your own home.   Health and safety tops wanting specific snacks

And, BYW, I’d honestly rescind the offer.

She’s going to cook gluten in that kitchen when you aren’t home.   Her

attitude screams “o what you don’t know, can’t hurt you”.

These commenters argued that the sister’s wants do not outweigh OP’s health needs or the rules of someone else’s home

WestStorage2459 − NTA. Regardless of whether she pays or not, you don't

NEED her help paying. She needs you, and you are accomodating her. Her

wants are just that, wants. Yours are needs. If this doesn't work for her, she

should look for somewhere else to live.

BeheadingBoomer61 − NTA. She wants to move in with you, from what I

can see you didn’t invite her to do so, and this is yours and your GF’s

apartment. Your sister seems to be ignoring that. The bottom line is that

anytime you move into someone’s home you have to abide by their rules.

And I agree with what everyone else is saying, at this point, do not let her

move in. There’s no way she’s gonna respect your wishes.

LaAndala − You are not compatible living together. Even if this wasn’t an

allergy but a preference, say you were vegan and wanted no animal

products in your kitchen, that’s your right.

It sounds like you don’t need your sister to move in for money or other

reasons, and even if you needed a roommate you’d be better off finding

someone else who wants and respects a gluten free kitchen. Of course NTA.

These commenters criticized OP for making the girlfriend seem responsible for rejecting the sister instead of presenting it as a joint decision

Special_Lychee_6847 − Small critique. .. don't say 'fine by me, but I'll have

to check with gf' You make her the bad guy, that way. As for the issue with

a gluten-free household, you're NTA Ppl underestimate cross

contamination. I think you're going a bit far, compared to how we handled

my father's celiac's disease.

But not everyone is mindful enough to always pay attention, and every

gluten allergy is different. Some just get tired and cranky, some have to go

to the ER. It's you and your gf's house. The two of you agreed. So that's the

way it's going to be in your house.

If your sister doesn't like it, moving in with you guys doesn't sound like a

good idea, at all.

Aligirl520 − YTA, but not for the gluten free kitchen. That's reasonable

given it's a health issue. What do you mean it's fine by you but that "we'd"

need to talk GF first. Wow. How incredibly inconsiderate of you. You and GF

are moving in together, the correct answer would have been: GF and I need

to discuss this together alone and we will let you know.

If GF says no she's not okay, then gluten-free kitchen doesn't matter and

you respond, we discussed this but we want to live by ourselves for now.

But now your GF is in the position to possibly be the bad guy if she doesnt

want to live with your inconsiderate sister (which lack of consideration

seems to be a genetic trait huh? ).

Why would you put your GF, you know the one you actually made plans to

move in together with, in that situation to possibly have conflict with your sister.

OP’s decision to create a gluten-free kitchen was a health boundary agreed on with their partner, not a random household rule.

The conflict began when the sister viewed it as an inconvenience rather than a necessary accommodation.

While some may understand her frustration about paying equal rent while having restrictions on shared spaces, others would argue that moving into someone else’s home means respecting the conditions that keep them safe.

Do you think OP was being unreasonable by requiring a gluten-free kitchen, or was the sister wrong for refusing a reasonable boundary?

Would you choose a different roommate arrangement instead? Share your thoughts below!
