Woman Demanded Boyfriend Throw Away His Game Collection, He Ended the Relationship Instead

in Social Issues

It started as a simple plan between two people in love: move in together and start a new chapter. But one unexpected demand turned that dream into a breakup story that caught Reddit’s attention.

His girlfriend wanted him to give up his prized video game collection, a hobby that meant far more than entertainment to him. When he refused, she accused him of choosing “toys over love.” He, on the other hand, saw it as protecting his independence and passion.

The internet quickly split into camps, those who thought he was childish, and those who believed he dodged a red flag. Scroll down to see the full story and how Reddit turned this argument into a lesson on respect and priorities.

A video game enthusiast faces a shocking ultimatum from his live-in girlfriend: sell his valuable collection or lose her forever

not the actual photo

'AITA for breaking up with my girlfriend over my video games?'

So I have a decent video collection, I will not post pictures as I do not want this post linked to my actual account.

My girlfriend of 2 years 25f and me 24f decided we wanted to move in together.

She kinda mentioned getting rid of my collection but I thought she was joking so I brushed it off.

Turns out she wanted me to get rid of my whole video game collection,

some of my games are worth some money and I've been keeping them so they can become more expensive.

My collection is also 3 years of me thrift shopping and I do not want to throw that away.

I tried to explain it but she refused and told me that I did not love her enough to make this sacrifice.

About 2/3 days ago she called me and said it's me or the f__king video games.

I chose the games and she hung up on me.

Everyone that I've spoken to (excluding a few people) have been telling me I f**ked up,

and that I should of picked her over some games. AITA?

For OP, the collection represents more than just a hobby, it’s a personal achievement built over years. It carries meaning, nostalgia, and even potential financial value.

Being asked to give it up wasn’t just about physical space; it felt like being asked to discard a part of her identity. When her girlfriend framed it as a test of love, “me or the games”, the ultimatum shifted the conflict from negotiation to control.

Psychologists often note that ultimatums in relationships rarely lead to healthy outcomes because they prioritize dominance over understanding.

Meanwhile, it’s easy to see where the girlfriend’s feelings may have come from. Perhaps she imagined a shared home that better reflected both partners or worried that OP’s attachment to her hobby might compete with emotional intimacy.

But her approach, demanding full sacrifice instead of compromise, closed the door to genuine communication. A balanced discussion could have included setting boundaries, finding creative storage solutions, or designating separate spaces for personal interests.

Relationship expert Esther Perel often emphasizes that healthy love requires both closeness and individuality, partners must be able to maintain their sense of self while building a shared life.

Similarly, Dr. John Gottman, a leading researcher on marital stability, stresses that mutual respect and acceptance of each partner’s individuality are vital for long-term success. Couples thrive, Gottman notes, when they integrate differences rather than trying to erase them.

In this story, choosing the games wasn’t about choosing things over love, it was about preserving identity and self-respect in the face of emotional pressure.

While it’s unfortunate that the relationship ended, it serves as a reminder that real love doesn’t demand erasing who you are to prove commitment.

So, was OP wrong for keeping her games? Or was this breakup inevitable because one partner saw them as clutter while the other saw them as a piece of themselves?

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors agreed that the girlfriend’s ultimatum was manipulative and controlling

dandelionii − NTA, ultimatums are stupid and unfair and if she's willing to make this big of a deal

over a videogame collection (which you presumably purchased with your own money),

it doesn't bode well for the future.

Beckels84 − NTA. Partners shouldn't give ultimatums and conditions for relationships.

She knows who you are as a person and about your collection before moving in.

If it's a problem for her and that makes the relationship not work for her, then she should walk away.

An ultimatum like that is straight up manipulative BS and you're better to be rid of her.

Edit: I guess "conditions" is throwing people, as a legitimate condition could be "don't cheat on me."

I guess I mean ultimatums and conditions like OP's girlfriend claiming that OP needs to prove his commitment

by getting rid of the collection. You shouldn't have to prove things or play games.

HolidayAbrocoma − NTA. She gave you an ultimatum about a hobby/collection that has monetary value?

Seems like you dodged a bullet

Virulencer − NTA. Anyone who gives you an ultimatum like that doesn't respect you and you are better off without them.

Growell − NTA. There is no inherent reason why she should even be asking this.

It’s super controlling, and she likely would have gotten worse. The people saying you screwed up?

They are so hung up on “your relationship matters more than video games”

that they’re probably not seeing the controlling/abusive context that you were dealing with.

Starz0rz − NTA, ultimatums are childish, shortsighted and a sign of possessiveness.

Don't ask the question if you're scared of the answer.

Having something you're passionate about and invested in is not a bad thing at all

(as long as it's not pathological or harmful).

You could've, however, made sure what she meant with getting rid of the games instead of brushing it off.

Even if a joke, such remarks generally come from a source of frustration or annoyance and are a sign at the very least.

Of course, easy to say in hindsight.

[Reddit User] − NTA she shouldn't have made you choose between a hobby or her.

That's just f**ked up on her end, would it be different if you had a book collection.

Just because she doesn't share your interests doesn't mean she has the right to tell you to get rid of yours.

You probably wouldn't have worked out anyway so it was a good thing.

These commenters offered balanced advice

DotComCTO − NTA. It's your hobby, and one of the ways you choose to enjoy your free time and blow off steam.

It's part of who you are. Her telling you to make a choice is, in a way,

being disrespectful of who you are and what you like. That's never going to work in the long term.

That said, if your hobby time exceeds the quality time you spend with your girlfriend,

then you need to think hard about that.

I've been gaming for decades, and I've got a ton of hobbies beside that.

My wife knew that well before we got married, but I make sure to give her most of my time and attention.

Furthermore, we split most of the chores and work around the house, including the cooking and cleaning.

So make sure you have your priorities straight.

Maybe your gf is reacting to how much time you spend playing vs time with her?

Lil-Lanata − NTA... It's not 'some', it's all. It's your hobby and a part of your life.

It's not causing any harm (unless you we're playing with them to the detriment of something else).

She wants you to get rid of a part of your life for what? What is her objection to it?

But seeing as she said and you didn't actually talk about it, I'm wondering if your communication was okay too.

AfternoonEnd − Not trying to sound rude, but what's the point of even asking

if you already chose what's more important to you. You don't sound uncertain of regretful, so I see no reason to even ask.

This group requested more context, wondering if the collection was excessive or causing lifestyle issues

MFlili2 − INFO: Why does she want you to get rid of your collection?

Is it a hoarder house situation with towers of disks and cartridges up to the ceiling or is there another reason?

this-here − There has to be more to this story than this.

What's the reason for her wanting you to get rid of the games? How did you react initially?

PolitenessPolice − INFO I refuse to believe that's all there is to this;

people don't just act like this unless there's something wrong.

Like, how they're stacked, is it a hoarding problem, how much money do you spend on games,

how much time do you spend playing them, etc.

Like, nobody acts that irrationally for no reason and especially not over bloody games.

There's got to be more. Did she give a reason? Has she ever shown any disdain for your collection previously over the years?

marigoldfroggy − INFO - How much physical space does your collection take up?

(i.e. fits on 1-2 bookshelves, fits in a single walk-in closet, takes up an entire bedroom,...)

- Who would be moving where if you moved in together? (new place, her place, your place, . ..)

Do you think choosing passion over partnership was brave or just immature? Could honest communication have saved this relationship? Drop your thoughts, Team Love or Team Level-Up?
