Stepdad Respects His Stepchildren’s Wishes, But His Wife Says That Means He Doesn’t Love Them

Blending families can be complicated, especially when love, loyalty, and personal identity are all involved. Sometimes the hardest decisions are not about what adults want, but about respecting what children are ready to accept.

The original poster (OP) married a woman who was already raising three children after losing their biological father. Over time, OP built a close relationship with the youngest child, who now wants him to officially become her dad through adoption. However, the older two children have clearly expressed that they do not want to be adopted and do not want OP taking on that role.

While OP believes their feelings should be respected, his wife sees his hesitation as a lack of commitment to her children. Read on to see how Reddit viewed this difficult family situation.

'My wife (33F) and I (36M) can't stop arguing over the adoption of my stepchildren'

My wife (33F) was a young widow with three young children when I met her.

We dated for around 2.5 years before marrying and I had a pretty decent relationship with all her kids going into the marriage.

My youngest stepchild and I bonded a lot more after the wedding and she now calls me dad.

My older stepchildren use my first name only and they tell people I married their mom not that I'm their stepdad.

We have not bonded as much though I have tried.

But they definitely keep an emotional distance where I'm concerned because they don't want me acting like their dad (they have said this).

Kids are now 8, 11 and 12. We have been married for two years now and adoption has been discussed.

The youngest would love for me to adopt her and become her dad officially.

The older two do not want me to adopt them and don't want another dad.

My wife talked to all three of them separately to me talking to all three.

She tried convincing her older two that little had to change overall and it would give them more security into the future.

But they don't care if there are benefits to being adopted. They don't want it. They'll never want it and they don't want to be asked again.

That's what they said.

All I did when I talked to them was assure them I love them and respect their decision and would be happy to reconsider later if they change their minds.

My wife doesn't want only one of her kids adopted by me. She doesn't think it would be right.

I told her I would not be down for an adoption against the will of two of the kids.

She told me I was making excuses and it sounds like I just don't want to be their dad. I told her I can't force it on them and I...

This has been an ongoing fight for a couple of months now. She sees my refusal as a sign that I don't really give a f__k.

I have explained my reasoning to her and assured her I love my stepchildren. But she believes if I truly did I would adopt all three.

I'm looking for advice because I foresee this driving us apart.

Love becomes complicated when people try to define it through actions that mean different things to everyone. For some families, a legal bond represents commitment, security, and belonging. For others, love is shown through patience, respect, and the willingness to accept emotional boundaries.

In this situation, the OP was not simply deciding whether to adopt his stepchildren. He was caught between wanting to honor his role as a father figure and protecting the trust of children who were still processing the loss of their biological father.

The emotional conflict in this family is not really about paperwork. It is about what adoption symbolizes to each person involved. The OP’s wife appears to see adoption as a public declaration that he fully accepts her children as his own.

From her perspective, having only one child adopted may feel like creating an unfair divide between siblings. However, the older children view the situation through a different emotional lens.

Their refusal may not be a rejection of the OP as a person, but a way of protecting their connection to the father they lost. Meanwhile, the OP is trying to balance love with consent, understanding that forcing a deeper relationship can sometimes damage the very bond he hopes to build.

A different perspective is that the OP’s hesitation may actually reflect a deeper understanding of parental relationships. Many adults assume that stronger commitment always requires stronger labels, but children often experience love through safety, consistency, and respect.

The older two children have clearly communicated a boundary: they do not want a replacement father. Accepting that boundary does not mean the OP cares less.

In some cases, refusing to pressure children into accepting a role they are uncomfortable with can be a powerful expression of care. It shows that their feelings matter even when those feelings are painful for the adults involved.

Psychologist and author Lisa Firestone has written about the importance of respecting children’s emotional experiences and avoiding attempts to control their feelings.

She explains that healthy relationships are built when people feel understood rather than pressured to respond in a certain way. Her work on emotional connection highlights that trust develops through empathy, patience, and acceptance rather than forcing closeness.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s decision may come from compassion rather than avoidance. The older children have already experienced a major loss and may fear that accepting adoption means replacing their biological father or betraying his memory. By allowing them to choose, the OP is giving them control over a deeply personal decision.

At the same time, the wife’s feelings also come from a place of wanting unity and security for her family. Her challenge is separating the idea of “being loved” from the idea of “being legally adopted.”

Ultimately, this family may need to recognize that love cannot be measured by a document alone. Adoption can be meaningful when everyone involved is ready, but a forced symbol of connection can create resentment instead of closeness.

The strongest family bonds are often built over years through everyday choices: showing up, listening, and proving that someone’s place in the family does not disappear simply because a legal title has not changed.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters agreed the older children’s wishes should be respected instead of being pressured into adoption

anglflw − The older two do not want to do it. She needs to eave them alone about it.

madelynashton − You wife is being unreasonable and she’s going to ruin her relationship with her older kids and with you if she doesn’t let this go.

I would ask her why she doesn’t believe her older children deserve to respect their memory of their Dad.

BrookieMonster504 − Your wife is very very wrong and will regret this if she doesn't drop it

These Redditors suggested therapy and emphasized that grief and blended-family dynamics require patience

pterodactylorpotato − She needs therapy to discuss why this paperwork means so much to her right now.

You are taking the children into consideration which is the correct thing to do.

Western-Breadfruit71 − I’d book a therapist who specializes in blended families and grief.

The two of you go and discuss this and whatever other myriad of things I’d have to imagine she has in her head that are preventing her

from supporting the kids and their feelings in a healthy way. Your wife is handling this completely wrong.

Not just “poorly” but in a potentially harmful, damaging way on several levels. These older kids are in a loyalty bind.

It happens commonly in divorce but it’s often even harder all around between a dead parent and a step parent.

I’m sure those kids absolutely do adore you but feel like they would be disloyal to their dad

whose memory they are hanging onto hard if they show you the affection and care they want to or seem to be expected to.

If they had the right fit in therapy, they could potentially see how love is not finite and being close to or loving you doesn’t mean

they can’t love and remember their dad. For the kids, if you’re in the US, programs like through Gilda’s Club might be a great fit for them.

Your wife needs to drop this and get some professional support in navigating things. She’s going to blow it for everyone.

These users argued that the stepchildren’s boundaries are valid and forcing closeness could damage the relationship

CuckooPint − As a step child who had difficulties dealing with my father's wife growing up, let me give you some advice:

few things will k__l a healthy relationship with a step child more than boundary stomping.

The step kids have made their boundaries clear: you're not their dad. If your wife keeps pushing, she is stomping on those boundaries.

When boundaries are stomped on, they will only get reinforced. Right now it's just "you're not our dad".

Next it'll be "you are nothing to us". Then it'll be "you are our adversary". The only way to break down the boundaries is to accept them.

Accept that this isn't what they want, and you will show you respect them (pretty much what you've been doing).

Your wife needs to be patient. Impatience will be the death of your relationship with these kids.

ProShyGuy − The best thing you can do is respect the kids' wishes. It sounds like you've done that.

Maybe remind your wife that she was an adult when her former husband passed and was able to emotionally process it as an adult.

Her kids didn't. They miss their dad a lot and it feels like their mom is trying to replace him.

NYChockey14 − I’d sit down and ask why she believe you’re making excuses when it’s not your decision?

I’d ask what she would have you do differently that doesn’t involve trying to “convince” the older kids

These commenters criticized the wife’s approach, warning that pushing adoption could create resentment

NOT-packers-fan2022 − Do your kids get social security survivor benefits?

If so, they might lose them after adoption. Something to consider. She’s very wrong and will alienate the kids.

EmceeSuzy − Your wife is very wrong. So wrong that I question her character.

Would adopting only the youngest unfairly divide the siblings, or would refusing her request disregard her equally valid bond? Can the mother accept that a healthy blended family may never use one identical label for everyone?
