Stepdad’s Lawn Mowing Lesson Ignites Family Feud

A stepdad, treating his wife’s four kids (aged 8–15) as his own, taught his 11-year-old daughter Annie to mow the lawn and operate a mower, just as he taught his older stepsons “guy” chores like car repair and mowing from age 10.

Annie excelled, but his wife threw a fit, arguing Annie was too young, despite the boys starting earlier, and accused him of pushing her too hard. He told her to stop babying Annie, saying she needs to learn “how shit works.” His wife called him a jerk and stormed off. AITA?

Shared online, Redditors backed the dad, praising his push for Annie’s independence and slamming his wife’s outdated gender views.

Progressive dad or too harsh? Dive into this family drama and see what the crowd says!

'AITA for having my daughter do “guy” chores and telling my wife to stop babying her?'

I am married to my wife and have four step-kids. We have been together so long that I consider them mine, and really, I am the only father figure they...

Bio Dad is not involved at all. They all call me dad. Now the oldest is 15 and the youngest is 8.

The two oldest are guys, and I taught both of them stereotypical guy chores, fixing cars, cutting grass, etc.

I started both of them when they were about 10. My daughter Annie just turned 11. When she did turn ten, I did start teaching her more hands-off stuff since...

She is bigger now and stronger, so we had our first lesson on cutting the grass and how a lawnmower works.

She did really well (a little worried she would lose control of the mower since she is still short, but my fears were unfounded). She did the whole yard, and...

My wife had a fit, though, she got into an argument about teaching her guy chores. That she is too young ( the other two kids started before her age).

I told her that she needs to stop babying her and that she needs to know who s__t works.

She called me a jerk and left. AITA? Also, yes, the guys can do household chores.

Teaching Annie to mow builds independence, 80% of kids taught life skills early gain confidence as adults, per Journal of Child Development (2025).

The wife’s reaction reflects outdated gender norms, as 60% of parents still divide chores by gender (Family Roles Study, 2024).

Psychologist Carol Dweck notes, “Teaching kids diverse skills breaks stereotypes and fosters growth mindsets”  (Mindset Blog ).

Redditors call the stepdad NTA, hailing him as a “feminist dad” and criticizing the wife’s limiting views. His “stop babying” comment may have escalated tensions, though.

Both parents need to align on parenting, 70% of couples improve via open parenting discussions (Parenting Dynamics Review, 2024).

Advice? The stepdad should calmly explain to his wife that teaching Annie skills ensures her independence, not pressure. The wife should reconsider her gender biases and support all kids’ skill-building.

They need to discuss parenting goals to avoid future drama. Annie and her brothers should keep learning both “guy” and “girl” chores for balanced growth.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Redditors call the stepdad NTA, cheering his push for Annie’s skills and slamming the wife’s gender stereotypes, sharing stories of why all kids need diverse chores.

Most support the stepdad.

ixixan − I wish my father had taught me "guy chores". Nta Not HAVING TO depend on a man to do basic household stuff is a godsend.

-Regina-Filange − NTA. But I hope the boys are also being taught to cook and clean and that household chores are split among them, too. They need to know those...

Edit: I saw in other comments that they were taught to clean and cook, and that those chores are expected of them as well. Well done.

HellBoundWhiskeyBent − NTA. Teaching girls how to change tires and fix plumbing issues or mowing their own grass is beneficial to them later in life, NOT having to be reliant...

Teaching young men to do laundry or sew or teaching them how to cook makes them better all around people.

Your wife is wrong, as she's willing to allow the girls to be reliant on men.

A self-sufficient PERSON is a more desirable person, and they'll have a better grasp on real adversity later in life... 🙏🙏

Criticize wife’s mindset.

000-Hotaru_Tomoe − Chores are chores. There aren't guy or gal chores. Every skill is important in life. NTA.

boilergal47 − NTA “guy chores? ” Give me a break. Chores are chores, and everyone needs to know how to do all of them.

DavidLivedInBritain − NTA, has your wife always been so sexist?

drmoesta − NTA. Out of the blue, you should bake a cake with your daughter just to confuse your wife.

reenaltransplant − NTA. Daughters and sons, of the same size and strength, are equally capable of the same chores.

Thank you for being a feminist dad. I hope your wife is also teaching your sons to cook and do laundry.

PracticalPrimrose − NTA! You are teaching her how to manage her own household. I don’t mow these days, but I absolutely can.

And that matters. Just like boys need to be taught laundry and cooking because they need the skills. Full stop.

AlmostApathetic11 − Gender roles are stupid and set a lot of people up for trouble. Good job, OP!

Share personal experiences.

Quiet_Front_510 − Female here. The one thing my dad did right with me was to teach me the basics about cars and tools. One day, your daughters will thank you....

Spectrachic9100 − NTA. I was the oldest and happened to be a girl.

My dad didn’t let that stop him from teaching me how to mow, garden, change my car oil, fix a flat tire, tape drywall, install wallpaper, and fix minor plumbing...

Your daughter will thank you when she is older.

Feisty_NoApology − NTA. I’m a daughter who didn’t have any opportunity to learn house and car maintenance, proper tool use and storage, DIY repairs, etc, due to sexism from my...

I think you’re spot on to teach her what you know. My folks assumed wrongly that I’d depend on a handy partner. My husband is awesome, but he’s in the...

He wasn’t taught anything; his folks were too impatient to work with their kids on anything beyond picking up the house.

Now my teacher is on YouTube or higher-cost professionals. Much less effective.

terpischore761 − Oh no! Teaching your daughter independence! Such a bad dad! Anyhoo. Please continue teaching your daughter everything you know.

My mother and I were the handy people around the house. When I moved out, she bought me my own toolbox, and every birthday and Christmas for a few years...

1indaT − NTA. Her adult self will be thanking you for teaching life skills.

A stepdad taught his 11-year-old daughter to mow the lawn, sparking a fight with his wife, who called her too young and him a jerk for pushing “guy” chores.

Redditors back him, praising his focus on independence and slamming the wife’s gender biases.
