Stripper Pole Sparks A Childcare Clash with A Demanding SIL

by Marry Anna

OP keeps a pole dancing pole in her bedroom for exercise and loves babysitting her 4-year-old niece every other weekend.

When the niece asked about the pole, OP explained it’s for exercise, but her controlling sister-in-law (SIL) demanded it be removed during visits, threatening to end the childcare arrangement. OP refuses, arguing it’s her home and she’s providing free care.

This story pits personal freedom against family demands. Is OP wrong for standing her ground? Let’s dive into the details and see what the online community thinks.

Stripper Pole Sparks A Childcare Clash with A Demanding SIL

'AITA, my hill to die on?'

I have a stripper pole in my bedroom because I like to pole dance for fun. I'm not very good at it lol, but I get better with practice.

I also babysit my 4-year-old niece every other weekend, Fri-Sun, because my bro and SIL work. I love this arrangement. I get plenty of time with my little love.

When she is there, I don't practice on it. But it's a pain in the ass to get down, so I just leave it.

My niece asked me what it was for, so instead of lying, I told her I use it for exercise.

when her mom was working out at home yesterday, she suggested that she exercise on the spinny pole that Auntie has in her room.

My SIL freaked out and told me that when her daughter is here, I am going to take the pole away, and it's not optional.

I said no, obviously. Because she's 4 and doesn't know it's a stripper pole, she doesn't know what a stripper is, she just knows that I exercise on it.

My SIL has a long history of being demanding when it comes to my niece, so now she's threatening to stop my time with her.

I am willing to make this my hill to die on because I keep her overnight for free.

But now I leave my bro without childcare when they need it the most, I just want him to have his wife calm down.

This story highlights a clash over personal autonomy and cultural stigma around pole dancing, often misjudged as solely erotic. OP is within her rights to keep the pole in her home, especially since she explained it appropriately to her niece and doesn’t use it during visits.

Family psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner notes, “Imposing control over someone else’s personal space, especially when they’re providing free help, signals unhealthy boundaries” (The Dance of Connection).

SIL’s demand stems from stigma, but threatening to cut childcare is manipulative. OP should discuss with her brother to clarify the value of her free help and set boundaries with SIL.

SIL needs to recognize she can’t control OP’s home and should focus on educating her daughter rather than imposing biases. This case emphasizes respecting personal space and the value of unpaid family help.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Reddit strongly backs OP, arguing SIL has no right to dictate her home, especially given the free childcare. Here’s a roundup of reactions.

Many emphasized OP’s autonomy.

janet819535 − NTA. You aren't leaving your bro without childcare - SIL is. She can fix her attitude or figure out childcare on her own. Don't bend to her b**lshit.

v_ioletatlas − NTA. You are gifting her free childcare; she has no room to make demands like this

[Reddit User] − NTA, she can pay you if she wants to make demands.

Ducky818 − NTA. She must think you're going to train your 4-year-old niece to be a stripper.

That's quite a stretch. I think your explanation was quite reasonable, while SIL's demands are not.

wellzie95 − I have a pole up in my kitchen that I practice my pole fitness on, don’t give a f**k what anybody else thinks. NTA.

Some criticized SIL’s stigma around the pole.

asianingermany − NTA. Pole dancing is a legit exercise. It requires a lot of strength and agility.

Maybe you should try to explain it to her instead of calling it a stripper pole yourself.

Negative-Net-9455 − It doesn't matter what the pole is for.

It's none of their business, even if you were a stripper and you used the pole as part of your routine, it's none of their business.

Your niece is 4 years old and doesn't care what a stripper is or does. All she sees is a cool thing to interact with that you can spin around.

Honestly, American Puritanism is incredible sometimes. NTA.

familytrollup − If you came to see me you would be disappointed because I am awful at it. 🙈🤣

NegativeTips − NTA. Let them leave themselves without childcare, then watch them come back once they realise how much they'd been saving on childcare.

Also, a pole can 100% be used for exercise.

thinkevolution − NTA. She can ask, you can decline. it's your house and your exercise equipment. If she would rather not have free childcare, then that's on her.

I'd definitely talk to your brother about it too, but realistically, if she wants you to keep providing care, she can't dictate what you do in your home (provided it's...

[Reddit User] − NTA. Since when is a pole automatically taboo?

PacifistWarFreak − NTA. If your SIL cannot accept the fact that you have a pole in your room, then let her find other accommodations for her daughter.

You are not her indentured servant, and she has no right to order you around, more so since you're the one doing her a favor.

A few offered humorous or practical responses.

hes_got_a_guard − NTA. She's 4. Tell her it's a fireman's pole.

iolaus79 − NTA. Pole fitness is legitimate exercise; however, stop calling it a stripper pole, it's a fitness pole, or even a dancing pole.

If you call it a stripper pole, no wonder she sees it as seedy (and it's not, I used to do classes, and it's one heck of a workout and...

merryschmetterling − NTA. Just do what the fraternity at my school does and say it's an integral structural support beam.

OP is justified in refusing to remove her pole dancing pole, especially since she’s providing free childcare and explained it innocently to her 4-year-old niece. Reddit agrees SIL’s demands are unreasonable and rooted in stigma.

How can OP resolve this tension with SIL while keeping her niece in her life? Have you faced overbearing family demands? Share your stories!
