Teacher Says She’ll Tell Teen’s Dad He Isn’t His Hero, Then Gets an Answer She Never Expected

Teachers sometimes try to make lessons more personal by asking students about family, role models, or people they admire. I think that can work well until an adult assumes everyone has the same kind of relationship waiting for them at home.

One Redditor remembered an English class from junior year when a disliked teacher was covering the hero’s journey and asked who the student considered a hero. Wanting to keep the exchange short, the OP simply said there was no one.

The teacher then made a casual comment about telling the student’s dad, apparently unaware that the subject touched a very painful part of their childhood. The response came instantly and caught the entire class off guard. Scroll down to see what the OP said and why the teacher suddenly seemed much less interested in starting conversations afterward.

A student reveals the painful truth about his absent father when a teacher questions his hero

'My English Teacher was Gonna Tell My Dad He Wasn't My Hero'

So a little background first. My dad cheated on my mom when she was pregnant with me.

Then on my first Christmas, they had a big fight over her travel plans while she was on leave from the Navy.

After that he never contacted us again until my 21st birthday. This has always been a sore subject for me.

Now on to the story. My junior year of highschool, I had an English teacher who everyone hated.

I especially butted heads with her. We were going over the hero's journey and she decided to ask me who my hero was.

Not wanting to really interact with her beyond a short response, I said I didn't really have one.

Her response was, "well I'm gonna tell your dad you said that."

I immediately responded, "If you find him, let me know so I can punch him in the face."

She tried to act like she didn't hear me but I knew she did because everyone else reacted to it. She tried to avoid interacting with me after that.

Some family wounds become quiet with time without ever becoming insignificant. For this student, his father was not a comforting figure waiting at home to hear about school. He was someone who disappeared from his life after infancy and remained absent until adulthood.

So when the teacher casually joked that she would tell his dad he did not consider him a hero, she unknowingly touched a subject carrying years of abandonment, anger, and probably unanswered questions. His response was sharp, but it did not come out of nowhere.

The emotional dynamic is less about disrespecting a teacher and more about what happens when an adult makes an assumption about a student’s family structure. The teacher likely intended a harmless joke based on a familiar cultural idea: children admire their parents, particularly their fathers.

For most students, the comment might have meant nothing. For him, it instantly forced a deeply personal history into a public classroom moment. His sarcastic answer became a defensive shield, allowing him to regain control without explaining his entire childhood to classmates.

There is another perspective worth considering. Humor and aggression can sometimes perform the same psychological job: creating distance from painful emotions.

Saying he wanted to punch his father sounds confrontational, but underneath it may have been a much more vulnerable statement that person abandoned me, and this still hurts. Teenagers in particular may find anger easier to display publicly than sadness, rejection, or grief.

Research discussed by the American Psychological Association shows that childhood neglect and prolonged caregiver absence can have lasting effects on emotional development, attachment, stress regulation, and relationships.

Developmental psychologist Nathan Fox and other researchers cited by the APA have found that children deprived of consistent caregiving can experience significant developmental consequences, although supportive relationships and improved environments can also foster recovery.

Verywell Mind similarly explains that early emotional neglect can affect trust, self-worth, emotional expression, and later relationships, while emphasizing that these outcomes are not inevitable and can be addressed with support and therapy.

That helps explain why a seemingly minor classroom exchange carried so much emotional force. The teacher did not cause the original wound, but her assumption accidentally pressed directly on it.

The practical lesson is not that teachers must avoid discussing families altogether. It is that questions about heroes, parents, and home life are safer when they leave room for different realities. “Who is someone you admire?” gives students choice without assuming that admiration belongs to a parent.

The student’s comeback may still make people laugh years later, but underneath the humor is a useful reminder: ordinary words can land very differently when they touch a history nobody else can see.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These users loved the sharp comeback and how casually it landed

HellyOHaint − This made me smile, thanks for sharing lol

CoderJoe1 − The best lines are tossed out casually like this, yet inflict instant damage.

These commenters shared darkly funny responses to insensitive remarks about deceased parents

shesinsaneornot − I have a similar story. Unlike OP's sperm donor, my father was an amazing human being who died young

(more than 30 years ago). At some point in the first decade after he died, someone who barely knew me asked,

all annoyed about something, "What would your father say? !?" and I replied with my best zombie impression.

Urbit1981 − I had a parent die when I was in high school and occasionally someone will make comments about me not wanting to spend holidays or vacation with them.

I will get rude comments like 'just wait until you lose a parent. ' I usually respond with 'Been there, done that, got the emotional trauma. '

These Redditors shared stories about difficult teachers abusing small amounts of authority

Loud_Ad_8372 − I had a teacher like that my senior year of high school. Everyone feared getting her and no one dared stand up to her. Good job!

BillButtlickerII − I had a chemistry teacher that didn’t like me because I didn’t respect her for being a lazy teacher

and just assigning us endless worksheets so she could sit behind her desk and b__lshit.

One day she tried to embarrass me in front of class saying she didn’t like my Tie Dye t-shirts

(I wore them regularly because it was cheap to buy white T-shirts and dye them) and I loudly and quickly responded, “Yeah, well I don’t like you”.

She had no response because she knew she started it and was rude first.

She also worked with my Mom at that school for 15+ years until my mom transferred to another district

and she knew better than to try and punish a good teachers kid that had no issues ever in any other class.

I also told my mom what happened and she gave her a ring and told her what she really thought of her

and if she was rude to me again she’d let the administrators know that a teacher was bullying students appearances.

DethNik − I had a teacher in my senior year of highschool who would tell me that my opinions in a philosophy class were wrong.

For my final project, I wrote a paper about the Beatles and philosophy in their music.

She suggested three songs for me to write about and I chose three different ones.

When we sat down to discuss the project, she refused to grade it because I hadn't used her suggestions.

I had to add more to the paper on those songs and then she got upset because I "did it, but I didn't try. " Ms. Salloway, respectfully, I don't...

bigassangrypossum − I also had a s__tty English teacher in my junior year of high school.

She was obsessed with the local football team and demanded we write a paper about football.

I wrote about Pokémon using extremely condescending sarcasm to try to make it relevant to the world of football.

She tried to get the administrative staff to ban me from her class for "flagrant insubordination,"

but they essentially told her she worked in a public school and she needed to grow up.

I think the problem between us started when she tried to shame me in front of the class for using a "made-up word," which was "preterite."

She even got out a dictionary and everything and claimed it's not a real word because it's labeled "archaic. "

It's so sad to see so little power go to people's heads and turn them into literal angry children.

It was a bizarre experience to be hated by a woman 3 times my age at 16 years old over vocabulary and sports.

I wonder if she looks back on it now and feels any embarrassment?

These users stressed how careful adults should be when speaking about a child’s family situation

inthevelvetsea − Reminds me of my first grade teacher who embarrassed me for having a different last name than my (step)dad.

When I became a teacher, I made sure to never assume what a child’s family looked like. I never referred to a child’s parents unless I knew them personally.

I had children with parents who were in prison, undocumented, deceased, adopted, living abroad, serving in the military, divorced, etc.

I never assumed anything, and I never put my students in the position of having to explain or defend their families.

AdamxCraith − I had something very similar happen. My dad split when I was 7.

Never heard from him. When I started high school, I went into JROTC. (Purely because my brother refused and I was petty. )

We had to do the whole thing, wear the uniform, get our haircut, etc.

About a month into being a freshman, the cadet CSM (basically second highest student position) started chewing me out because I missed a few spots shaving.

"What's wrong with you, Craith? No one ever taught you how to shave? What, you don't have a dad? "

I was nervous and anxious so I just gave him a quick "No, Sergeant Major. I do not."

That man, a kid, really, hardly older than me softened his expression and says. "It's okay, Craith. I didn't have a Mom and I turned out pretty alright. "

And walked off without giving me a demerit.

It could have been a really s__tty and awkward moment,

but it was actually really comforting he let himself be vulnerable with me for a minute to put me at ease.

Was the student’s comeback harsh, or exactly proportional to an intrusive remark? And should teachers simply retire “What would your mother/father say?” unless they already know the answer?
