Teen Cooks Lunch For Her Dad, But Her Half Brother Takes It And Her Mom Blames Her

When family members move in together during difficult times, everyone has to adjust.

But helping someone does not mean one person should automatically become responsible for everyone else.

The original poster (OP) is a 15-year-old girl whose mother became homeless and moved into OP’s home with her children after OP’s father offered them a place to stay.

OP often cooks special lunches for her father because he dislikes typical cold meals and leftovers.

One day, OP returned home and discovered that her own prepared meal had been eaten by her 13-year-old half brother.

Although he apologized and explained that he was tired of eating sandwiches, OP was upset because it was her personal lunch, not a family meal.

The situation became more complicated when OP’s mother accused her of being selfish and suggested she should simply cook extra portions for her siblings.

Now OP is questioning whether she was wrong for refusing to take on that responsibility.

Teenage girl cooks for her father, but a half-sibling takes her meal and sparks a family conflict

not the actual photo

'AITA for how I treated my half brother?'

After my(F15) mom(F40) went homeless, my dad(M44) let her and her kids

move in with us out of pity.

My dad is at work from 9 to 17 and he absolutely hates sandwiches and cold

food or leftovers. Now that I have some free time I like to cook him lunch

and take to his workplace for him.

Yesterday I got home to see that my own portion of food is gone. My half

brother(M13) apologized and said he was really hungry and it smelled good.

Some backstory is that my mom's kids stay home all day and are expected

to make a sandwich or something (with groceries their own mom buys). He

said he was sick of sandwiches and I always cook these nice meals and won't

share with them.. I got angry and told him it was my lunch that he ate and

sent him to his room.

When my mom came home she got angry and said I'm a selfish b__ch for

treating my half brother like that. She said she'll pay me for the meal and

said it wouldn't k__l me to cook for my half siblings as well.

I told her this is her job not mine and I'm sick of her attitude and had to go

hungry for an hour because of her son. She called me an a__hole.

Many people are willing to help their family, especially during difficult times, but kindness can become painful when others begin treating it as an obligation.

In this situation, the OP was not upset simply because a portion of food disappeared.

She was hurt because something she created through her own effort and care was taken without asking, and then she was criticized for objecting.

The emotional dynamic here is complicated.

The OP appears to have taken pride in caring for her father by preparing meals he enjoys, especially because he works long hours and appreciates something homemade.

That routine was an expression of love, responsibility, and gratitude.

When her half brother ate her portion, it likely felt like her effort was ignored.

On the other side, the younger sibling may have genuinely been hungry and tired of eating the same simple meals, especially while adjusting to a new household situation.

However, wanting something better does not automatically mean someone else is responsible for providing it.

A different perspective is that this situation reflects how family roles can become blurred during a crisis.

The OP’s mother lost housing and needed support, but the responsibility for caring for her children did not transfer to a teenage daughter.

Sometimes older children in complicated family situations are unintentionally pushed into caretaker roles because they are capable and available.

While helping can be meaningful, it should not become something they are expected to provide at the expense of their own needs.

This applies strongly here. The OP was not refusing to ever share food or rejecting her half siblings.

Her frustration came from being expected to absorb the consequences of a situation she did not create.

Her father choosing to help the family is generous, but that does not mean the OP should automatically become another caregiver, cook, or provider.

At the same time, the younger brother’s actions may have come from feeling left out rather than from intentional disrespect.

Seeing someone in the house eat homemade meals while he eats basic food could understandably create jealousy.

The healthier solution would have been communication: asking if he could have some, helping prepare meals, or discussing expectations with the adults in the home.

The larger lesson is that compassion and boundaries can exist together.

Helping family members through hardship is admirable, but teenagers should not have to sacrifice their own well-being to compensate for adult responsibilities.

A home can provide support without turning one person’s generosity into everyone else’s entitlement.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters agreed the poster was NTA

National-Report-5473 − Tbh, I would just tell your mom that she, as the

adult, can cook for her kids. Not you. NTA.

Bambi_H − There is a lot of missing context on this story, but you're NTA for

not cooking for your siblings when there are two adults in the house. It

sounds like things are difficult though, hope you've got some support.

PrideCompetitive8758 − nta, but cut kid some slack, they already are on

losing side with mom like that and have no one in their corner. The only one

at fault is mom. Try to be kinder to them, in other circumstances it could

have been YOUR life. Some empathy won't k__l you.

These commenters focused on the need for boundaries with the mother

wellwth2026 − NTA. Your mother is the AH. But maybe sit down with

brother and talk to him like a person. It is also not his fault. You could offer

to teach him how to cook. Being a big sister who understands that your

mom is the AH could help you both in a horrible situation.

JMLP82 − Honestly, it seems like you have a lot of resentment about your

mom and half-siblings staying with you and your dad. I don’t think this single

meal is really the issue. So I think you need to really sit your dad down and

talk with him about your feelings in a constructive manner.

Not attacking his choice to be compassionate, but really share with him how

you feel – the ways you feel vulnerable about the situation, not just the

ways it may make you angry. Whatever the issues are, just talk to your dad about it.

And tell him that if they are going to stay, you really need him to enforce

boundaries to address whatever those issues are for you. Is it unrestricted

access that your mother has to you? Is it having your half siblings in your

personal space and time? Is it feeling put upon to do things like this with

preparing food and/or babysitting?

Like really, what is underneath all of your frustration and how can some

firm boundaries be put in place by him, not you, to keep you emotionally

secure and to protect your time and energy because it is your home first and foremost.

The last thing I will say is that if you are able to get to a place where you

feel emotionally safe and empowered, I would hope that at some point, you

might be more receptive to forging stronger bonds with your half siblings.

You don’t need to worry about that right now until you feel more secure.

But when you do, just understand that the relationships we choose to

invest in, can be the ones that produce the most fruit.

These commenters expressed concern that the situation may involve neglect or inappropriate pressure placed on the poster

Creamy_Breve − NTA I'm sorry you're in a really s__tty situation. You

shouldn't have to mother your father and half brother and take verbal

abuse. Do you have relatives you can stay with?

Embarrassed_Advice59 − this seems like a child n__lect situation…

These commenters criticized the mother’s behavior

That_Theme_5283 − Where is your dad in this situation? ?? Edit: Also NTA.

Your mom is a selfish excuse for a mother that is leeching off you and your

father since in another comment you said she can't be bothered to cook.

You seriously need to sit down with your dad and tell him everything going on.

Oncer93 − Have you talked to your dad about this, because you shouldn't be

cooking for your stepsiblings. Your mom is getting too comfortable living rent free.

SafetyFluid8535 − NTA especially as it sounds like you were also babysitting

your half siblings for your mom? She only got mad at you because your dad

wasn't there to point out that you were only following the adults'

agreement about food division.

Your mom can buy and teach her 13 yr old how to cook the meals you do, or

he could have watched you to learn or something.   Even if your parents

didn't have an agreement to divide food, he's old enough to know its rude

and inconsiderate to eat someone else's meal.

The OP was trying to do something thoughtful for her father by cooking him fresh meals for work, but that effort became complicated when her half-brother ate the portion she had prepared for herself.

While her brother was hungry and tired of eating the same food, the bigger issue was that OP’s mother expected her to take responsibility for feeding her children instead of acknowledging the boundary that was crossed.

A kind gesture turned into an obligation she never agreed to.

Do you think OP was being selfish, or was she right to say that her half-siblings’ meals are their parent’s responsibility? Share your thoughts below!
