Teen Shocked When Mom Gives Nanny First-Class Seat And Sends Him To Economy

For most families, international travel sparks excitement. For one mom, it also became the perfect opportunity to deliver a long-overdue reality check to her 18-year-old son. When her teen complained about their nanny getting a first-class ticket—on a fully paid-for vacation—she decided to let him test his own logic.

What followed included six months of warnings, a shock at the airport, and a grumpy teenager stuck in economy while the nanny enjoyed champagne and legroom up front. Was this tough love or a parental overstep? Let’s unpack the turbulence.

One mom thought a family trip would be a bonding adventure, but her son’s entitled attitude turned it into a lesson in humility

'AITA for paying first class airfare for my nanny and not my son?'

Me (F) and my husband (M) had our first child, Matt (18M) when we were just 17 years old.

We weren't in a very good financial situation at first and it only got better when Matt was 9.

Currently, we both work well-paying jobs, buy a spacious home, and have our luxuries.

We had two more children (8M and 5F), as we cannot stay at home all the time, we hired a nanny, May (45F) to take care of the little ones.

Matt had a complicated personality change at age 11.

We put him in private school and maybe the contact with other teenagers brought out a selfish and elitist side of him.

We tried our best to try to improve it, but with the onset of adolescence and stubbornness, it just seemed to get worse.

It got better when my husband and I decided that at age 16, he would work part time so he could start taking financial responsibility

and that seemed to give him a reality check as we cut our support on his perks.

This year, after the worst period of the pandemic, my husband and I decided to go on an international trip

and instead of giving May a vacation at home, we decided that we would take her (not going to work)

and pay for everything, (I don't live in the US) .

Matt, on a random day, overheard me talking to my husband that I was planning to pay for a first class seat for May

and her son for her to enjoy like we did.

He asked why we should do this, we were already paying for everything, let her go economy class if she can't afford first class.

I was shocked, I said that it was mean to say this and that she was an important person for our family,

who gives up having time for her own child to take care of mine. It's the least I can do.

He still stood his ground, so I said if he sees it that way, I said I'd buy him an economy seat and he'd have to turn around to pay

for an upgrade for him to see how privileged he is to have parents who can pay. He nodded, thinking it was a joke even though I said it wasn't.

As the months went by and I warned him that his ticket was economic and he didn't believe it.

On the day of the trip, like a shocked pikachu, he was startled when he realized I told the truth.

He threw a tantrum in the middle of the airport, saying that 10 hours of travel would be very uncomfortable.

I just replied: You had 6 months to gather, you've been warned.

The flight was ok, but Matt was outraged the entire trip, saying it was almost torture and that we had gone too far.

My husband agrees with me, but my parents said I went too far doing this. AITA?

Family travel decisions can quickly turn into lessons in values and empathy, especially when children perceive differences in treatment.

Parenting experts note that linking privileges to behavior can help older teens connect actions with consequences. According to Dr. Laura Markham, a clinical psychologist specializing in peaceful parenting, consistent follow-through on stated consequences fosters accountability and reduces entitlement.

In this case, the discussion isn’t just about seating arrangements, it’s about respect for people who play an essential role in the family’s daily life. The American Psychological Association highlights that modeling appreciation for caregivers can teach children to value service work and recognize contributions that may otherwise be overlooked.

When teens express classist attitudes, family therapists often recommend direct experiences that challenge those beliefs. Research on experiential learning suggests that exposure to different perspectives, paired with natural consequences, can be more impactful than lectures alone (Harvard Graduate School of Education). The goal is not to punish but to expand empathy through lived reality.

Finally, some experts advise combining consequences with later reflection. Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, an adolescent medicine specialist, notes that conversations after a challenging experience can help teens process emotions and connect the dots between empathy, privilege, and gratitude. This approach balances firmness with an opportunity for growth, keeping the parent-child relationship intact while still reinforcing family values.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors applauded Mom for humbling Matt, calling his economy seat a deserved reality check for his classist attitude

ghostofumich2005 − NTA. He fucked around and found out. Doesn't sound like those elitist attitudes really left, just simmered for a while.

my parents said I went too far doing this. Yes you absolutely tortured him by making him sit with the peasants. How awful.

stinstin555 − NTA. That sounds like the ULTIMATE humility chin check.

"A mistake that makes us humble is better than an achievement that makes us arrogant. " Hopefully he learned a valuable life lesson.

These users backed Mom but suggested therapy to address Matt’s deeper issues with money and entitlement, beyond financial consequences

lellyla − NTA Matt can't tell you what to do with your money and is plain mean and classist to negotiate a downgrade in airfare for anyone.

However, you have already tried taking privileges away by making him work and not supporting ~~him~~ (edit: his perks).

I don't think monetary punishment is going to work anymore, you need a new solution.

I would try a family therapist to see what is at the bottom of his relationship with money and what you can do to change it.

BusyLight32 − The flight was ok, but Matt was outraged the entire trip, saying it was almost torture and that we had gone too far.

NTA He is entitled and needs this reality check. However, if he is this entitled, someone a set the stage for this to happen.

Jonno250505 − NTA. Keep this up til your son realises that your money is not his money.

S1NN3RS96 − NTA. Brilliant parenting right that, and amazing employers too!!

Well done for recognising the fact your employee deserved that break, and I have an even bigger appreciation

that you included her son in that too! You really treated her like part of the family and that’s amazing! !

monkmasta − Yta a personality change with just perfect timing for the new babies arrival.

Naw you had your new family going and shun the mistake baby, then hire nannies and I bet ignore him even more.

Kids doing anything to get your attention and acting out is the only thing that works with your type ( even negative attention is attention)

You can phrase things anyway you want but deep down you know

you can't wait to get rid of the mistake baby and continue on with your new perfect family

Disastrous-Nail8885 − NTA and you are giving your son the life lessons he needed.

Hopefully you still had a good trip and I bet your nanny was grateful.

Doglove2000 − Yes your son behaviour is wrong, but look where he's coming from, he been made to work a part a job since he was sixteen

He had a very different life from his sibling when he was younger, up until he was what nine, he didn't have as much as they did.

Now his sibling have a nanny, and coming from his point he sees he had a diffent life then them where them.

Now, treating your Nanny like family is great!

Do that, but if you calmly had a conversation with your son and told him, why you were paying first class for them.

He will hold it against you in the future though, and he will see he is being treat differently.

There are better ways that don't draw line in the sand on how to treat you kids and teach them things, eg. Making him do charity work or something.

Aromatic-Wishbone-52 − NTA. You set a boundary, Matt didn't believe it, then got a reality check. Sounds like the perfect life lesson tbh.

These commenters roasted Matt’s “torture” claims, emphasizing that his whining proved Mom’s point about his privilege

tuttkraftverk − NTA and I'm sorry you have such an entitled son. Ask him why "almost torture" would be fine for the nanny but not for him.

RoyallyOakie − NTA...Of course he'll act like a martyr for having to endure the indignity of "economy",

but it's a good life lesson nonetheless. I hope your nanny and her son enjoyed their time.

cpagali − NTA He sees 10 hours in economy as "torture"? And he was encouraging you to let your nanny and her son endure it?

That's ridiculous. For the sake of your nanny's well-being during the flight, I am glad you kept them far apart.

Imagine what the flight would have been like with him whining in a nearby seat.

Kooky-Today-3172 − ESH- I'm sorry but you raised this child.

He struggled with teen parents until he was 9 and have to see his siblings having a much better life than he does.

And the send him to private school were he has contact with people who are filfh rich since birth and wonder about a "personaly change"

that you waited until 16 to adress and only atempeted fix with punishments.

I hope you give the same treatment (not paying for any "perks") to the other children when they grow up.

I really think you should reflect about the relationship with you oldest and try to adress the root of the problem

than rely only on punishments that won't do anything but make your child resent your whole family.

This user argued Mom’s focus on her new family and nanny may have sidelined Matt, fueling his behavior

Quoras123 − YTA When i read your text it seems to me you developed some hate for you son that you didnt resolve.

I think that since he was 11 you tried to "teach him a lesson". And i completly understand his resentment.

You wrote in your post that you even had to hire a nanny only for the little ones, because you work so much

so there is probably not enough family time with him on your part.

So you deprive him of your care and love for earning more money - and he doesn't even benefit from it.

He constantly gets denied nice thinks (to teach him a lesson), even has to work a s__tty part time job for everything more

than his basic needs or getting a car, when his parents throw around their new wealth. It seems like you love your nanny more than your son.

It is completly bs to tell the son having to work for everything as financial responsibility, not giving him an allowance like normal teenagers

who should be in school and focus on their education and not working s__tty part time jobs

that dont benefit their career, while you constantly throw around luxuries like multi thousand dollar vacations for your employees.

What will be your next step in this spiral to teach him a lesson? Dont pay for his college?

Throw him out at 18 because he is an "adult" then? It seems to me not your son changed when you got wealthier - you changed and made his life...

In the end, the flight landed, the trip happened, and the nanny enjoyed her well-deserved luxury. The son? Hopefully he came away with a better understanding of why comfort and respect shouldn’t be reserved for a select few.

So, was this savvy parenting or petty payback? Would you have matched the son’s seat to his attitude, or kept everyone up front for the sake of peace?
