They’re creepy, kooky, and altogether ooky—the family we can’t help but love, The Addams Family!
The beloved 1991 film, based on the classic ’60s TV series, brought together an all-star cast, including Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci. Their fantastic performances breathed new life into the quirky family we adore.
From the elegant Morticia and the flamboyant Gomez to the awkward yet lovable Uncle Fester, let’s take a look at where the iconic cast is today.
#1. Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams
From playing daughter to imagining her as the iconic mother! The internet went wild when a photoshopped image of Christina Ricci, who famously portrayed Wednesday Addams, depicted her as Morticia. While the image wasn’t real, one thing is true—Ricci, now 42, has something in common with Morticia: she’s a mom! In an interview with PEOPLE, Ricci shared how motherhood has transformed her, saying she’s “a completely different person” since becoming a parent, though she still cherishes her childhood acting days.
“I don’t have a favorite [film] of all time,” Ricci told PEOPLE. “I’ve had some incredible experiences and loved working as a child. I have to say The Addams Family movies were two really, really— they were like glory days for me as a 10 and 12-year-old.
Today, Ricci stars in the critically acclaimed series Yellowjackets and takes on a new role in the Netflix hit Wednesday, inspired by the beloved Addams Family.
#2. Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
Anjelica Huston earned a Golden Globe nomination for her iconic role as Morticia Addams, the spooky family’s matriarch. The Academy Award-winning actress, now 71, revealed in her 2014 memoir Watch Me that she initially thought her friend Cher would have been a natural first choice for the role of Morticia.
Since Addams Family Values, Huston has ventured behind the camera as a director while continuing to take on acting roles. She has appeared in several Wes Anderson films and starred in John Wick: Chapter 3, showcasing her versatility in both the director’s chair and on screen.
#3. Raúl Juliá as Gomez Addams
Addams Family Values marked Raúl Juliá’s final film released during his lifetime. The Puerto Rican actor, who portrayed the lively family patriarch Gomez Addams, had been acting since the 1950s.
Tragically, Juliá passed away on October 24, 1994, at the age of 54, due to complications from a stroke. His death left a lasting impact on fans and the film community, cementing his legacy as a talented and beloved actor.
#4. Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester
Christopher Lloyd has always had a special fondness for Uncle Fester. In a 2013 interview with Buzzfeed, the Back to the Future actor shared, “Every time the magazine came in with Charles Addams’ cartoons, I’d open it up, hoping there’d be one with Uncle Fester. He just always appealed to me, his whole persona.”
Standing at 6’1″, Lloyd had to bend his knees to make himself look shorter as Fester. “It worked out well because it gave me kind of a funny walk,” Lloyd, now 84, told Buzzfeed.
Even after five decades in the business, Lloyd shows no signs of slowing down. He has appeared in the TV adaptation of 12 Monkeys and 2021’s The Tender Bar. In October 2022, he reunited with Back to the Future costar Michael J. Fox at a Comic-Con event, much to the delight of fans.
#5. Joan Cusack as Debbie Jellinsky
Though Joan Cusack portrayed the scheming and murderous Debbie Jellinsky in Addams Family Values, her real-life love story is far more stable. The two-time Academy Award nominee, now 60, has been happily married to attorney Richard Burke since 1996.
While Cusack’s character might not have gotten her ballerina Barbie, she did land the beloved role of toy cowgirl Jessie in Toy Story 4. More recently, she appeared in the 2020 series Homecoming, continuing her impressive and varied acting career.
#6. Jimmy Workman as Puglsey Addams
When Jimmy Workman turned 18, he gained access to the trust holding his earnings from The Addams Family movies.
“I went through a stage where I went buck wild,” Workman, now 42, told PEOPLE in 2001. “I got all my partying out [of my system].”
Reflecting on his time on set, he recalled having a “blast” with co-star Christina Ricci. “We used to chase each other around and drive golf carts all over the lot. We also argued like brother and sister.”
Although Workman went on to appear in films like As Good As It Gets and The Biggest Fan, he has since retired from acting. Today, his younger sister, Ariel Winter, best known for her role as Alex in Modern Family, continues the family’s Hollywood legacy.
#7. Carol Kane as Granny
Though Carol Kane is widely recognized today for her role as Lillian Kaushtupper, the quirky landlord on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, she stepped into Addams Family Values as a new face, replacing Judith Malina as Granny. Even before that, Kane had already become a comedy staple, starring alongside Billy Crystal in The Princess Bride and winning two Emmys for her role on Taxi.
Reflecting on her time in Addams Family Values, Kane, now 70, told Parade in 2013 that the floor-length wig she wore was the most challenging part of the role. “That wig was amazing. It weighed I think five pounds and it was down to my feet,” Kane shared. “In every other way, it was delightful and wonderful to be part of, but physically, it’s very challenging for pretty much all of us. It was an exercise, but it was also a joy.”
