The Reason Chris Evans Did Not Shout The Iconic MCU Catchphrase In Avengers: Endgame

In Avengers: Endgame, Chris Evans didn’t shout his iconic catchphrase “Avengers assemble”, and he clarifies upon the reason for not doing so. The actor spent almost ten years portraying Steve Rogers/Captain America in the MCU, and the 2019 blockbuster helmed by Joe and Anthony Russo served as the climax of his storyline. He has been actively pursuing various career endeavors for more than three years now, including being voice actor for Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s Lightyear.

Relive the moments of Avengers with the iconic line here:

Evans has kept himself busy over the past few years by working on various projects, like appearing in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out and teaming up with the Russos once more for the next Netflix movie, The Gray Man. In the finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, a.k.a. the Falcon. had become Captain America, and Marvel Studios has aimed to reconstruct the MCU through Phase 4. Regardless, Evans is still connected to the MCU since he is frequently questioned about his time there. That involves some fresh information about how he concluded his ten-year tenure as the Star-Spangled Captain America in Avengers: Endgame.

Evans discusses a different way that the 2019 blockbuster’s “Avengers assemble” line may have been delivered in a recent interview with MTV News during promotion for Pixar‘s Lightyear. The actor admits that he considered shouting it to add emphasis, but in the end chose to deliver it in Avengers: Endgame in a quiet, resolute manner. He stated:

“[I]t almost feels like it should be shouted. And I was gonna shout the first take, and then it just felt like, you know, it almost feels like I knew what the camera was doing. You know that people are waiting for it. And it almost felt like a nice juxtaposition to almost, you know, go underneath it and then have everyone around me scream. And we tried that the first take, and then the Russos just said, ‘That’s it, don’t even do the screaming one.’ And I actually don’t know if we ever even tried it, I mean, I obviously tried it at my home the night before. And again, it could have worked. It could have worked, but I like the fact that it, you know, you almost have to lean in.”

Fans anticipated the MCU’s delivery of the “Avengers assemble” statement, as Evans pointed out. Marvel Studios was well aware of this and even teased it at the conclusion of Avengers: Age of Ultron as Captain America and Black Widow begin the New Avengers’ training. But the movie abruptly ended before he could finish it. Some fans were upset by this because it appeared that the studio was making fun of this crucial passage from Marvel Comics. Given that the Avengers battled Thanos separately during Avengers: Infinity War, there wasn’t exactly a good time to utilize it. Kevin Feige and his team have been holding it back for this pivotal moment in Avengers: Endgame, which is reportedly the MCU creator’s favorite scene in the franchise until now.

In terms of logistics, it is true that Evans’ delivery of “Avengers assemble” in Avengers: Endgame is illogical. There were far too many people in the fight for them to have heard him say it – unless they were all wearing earpieces, which is a possibility, although not confirmed. Regardless of this, the usage of the statement is possibly the greatest. This subdued display of strength better suits Captain America’s character journey, aside from Evans’ rationale for it. It made more sense that he presented it this way because he was never ostentatious with his abilities.
