They Hadn’t Brushed Their Teeth in Six Weeks, Then One Tiny Victory Changed Their Day

Sometimes getting better does not look impressive from the outside.

There are no dramatic speeches, major breakthroughs, or life-changing announcements. Sometimes it looks like standing in front of a bathroom sink, picking up a toothbrush, and doing something that used to be automatic.

For one Reddit user, that moment came after roughly a month and a half without brushing their teeth.

They were going through a difficult period mentally and had struggled to keep up with basic self-care. They felt ashamed that nobody knew about it and worried people would find the situation disgusting. Still, that morning, they brushed their teeth.

It might sound incredibly ordinary. To them, it felt enormous.

They were already going to therapy and said they were slowly getting better. This small act was proof that, despite everything, they were beginning to move forward.

And Reddit was ready to celebrate with them.

They Hadn’t Brushed Their Teeth in Six Weeks, Then One Tiny Victory Changed Their Day

'I Brushed My Teeth Today?'

Today I brushed my teeth for the first time in a month and a half. I've been going through a really rough patch mentally, and I know that's not really...

I'm getting better, and I've been going to therapy. And I know that I'm disgusting for not brushing my teeth all this time, but this is kind of a big...

No one knows I haven't been brushing my teeth, and I'm very ashamed of it, so I can't celebrate this with anyone.

Maybe it's not a big deal or it seems like an easy thing to do, but it wasn't for me. I'm just happy that I started again. I feel a...

Edit: Wow, thank you all for the outpouring of support! I didn't know this was a common problem for people with depression and burnout issues. It seems I inspired a...

I brushed my teeth again this morning and I downloaded Finch. Being able to turn it into a game and somehow get credit for taking care of myself feels good....

A Toothbrush Became a Milestone

The poster admitted they felt embarrassed about going so long without brushing.

They even apologized for sharing something that might seem insignificant to other people. But they explained that brushing their teeth had genuinely become difficult during their rough patch.

That distinction mattered.

When someone is struggling mentally, ordinary routines can stop feeling ordinary. Getting out of bed can require effort. Showering can feel overwhelming. Preparing food can become a project. Even standing at the bathroom sink for two minutes can feel like an unreasonable demand.

So when the poster finally brushed their teeth, they decided to celebrate the achievement anonymously online.

“I feel a little lighter,” they wrote after sharing it.

Then something unexpected happened.

Other people started admitting they understood.

One commenter said they had gone about a month without brushing and that the post motivated them to start again. Another person described going through the same struggle after losing a parent. A commenter who identified as a dentist even admitted that they had once stopped brushing for several weeks during a major tragedy.

Suddenly, the poster’s embarrassing secret did not seem quite so lonely.

The Comments Turned Into a Group Pep Talk

The responses were overwhelmingly supportive.

People reminded the poster that they did not need to apologize or justify themselves. One person pointed out that healing is not linear and that small victories still count.

Others offered practical ideas.

An electronic toothbrush was suggested for days when manually brushing felt like too much effort. Another commenter encouraged making brushing part of a routine again, with the classic reminder that brushing in the morning protects your social life while brushing at night protects your teeth.

Then the poster returned with an update.

They had brushed their teeth again the next morning.

They had also downloaded Finch, a self-care app that turns everyday tasks into something resembling a game. For someone who had struggled to motivate themselves, receiving a little virtual credit for taking care of basic needs apparently made the process feel more rewarding.

The original post had started as an embarrassed confession.

It became a small source of motivation for other people.

Why Tiny Tasks Can Feel Huge During Depression

There is a reason basic self-care can become difficult during periods of depression. The National Institute of Mental Health lists changes in energy, difficulty concentrating, and problems with completing everyday activities among symptoms that can accompany depression.

That helps put the poster’s experience into perspective.

Brushing your teeth requires very little physical strength under normal circumstances. But when motivation and energy are severely reduced, even familiar routines can feel disproportionately difficult.

Research on behavioral activation, an approach commonly used in depression treatment, also focuses on gradually reconnecting people with manageable activities rather than waiting until they suddenly feel motivated. Small actions can help rebuild routines and create a sense of accomplishment.

That does not mean brushing your teeth magically fixes depression. It simply means that a tiny action can still matter.

For the poster, the toothbrush was not really the point.

It was evidence that they could still take one step forward.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

& no money but anyways) it’s the baby-steps that make the biggest difference. Keep it up & keep going, I promise even just having that routine helps. You got this...

Final Thoughts

A month and a half without brushing is not something to romanticize, and dental care still matters. But shame rarely makes difficult things easier.

The encouraging part of this story is what happened afterward.

The poster brushed again. They found a tool that helped with motivation. They shared their experience, and someone else picked up their own toothbrush because of it.

Progress does not always arrive dramatically. Sometimes it is quiet, awkward, and completely ordinary.

Sometimes it is just toothpaste, a toothbrush, and two minutes that you almost didn’t think you could manage.

But if getting there took everything you had that day, it counts.
