They Keep Taking Her Things Without Asking, Then Call Her Dramatic For Setting Boundaries

Living with family can feel comforting, but it can also come with a quiet loss of boundaries. When personal space starts to blur, even small things can turn into ongoing frustrations that slowly build over time.

That’s exactly what happened to this original poster (OP), who began noticing her belongings disappearing every time she spent a couple of days away. Clothes, makeup, even brand-new items would go missing or come back damaged, despite her repeatedly asking for basic respect.

After one incident pushed her too far, she decided to take matters into her own hands with a simple but firm solution. Now, her family thinks she’s overreacting.

Scroll down to see what she did and why it caused even more tension!

A woman’s things keep disappearing, so she locks her room as her family accuses her of going too far

'AITAH for buying a fingerprint locked handle?'

So. I stay at my house 5 days a week then at my boyfriends the other 2.

When I come home from his house something is always missing.

Last time it was my Hoodie I hadn't even took the tag off yet, week before that?

My favourite blush. its always something, perfumes, clothes, makeup and f__king pillows??

I have told my mum and sister.

IF you want to borrow something text me and ask I'll probably say yes but I would like to know where my things are.

They said they would of course they didn't.

Last week I got new new bedding put it on before going to my bfs so it would be nice for me coming back.

My sister slept in my bed and spilled juice all over my bedding.

I was raging obviously because JUST ASK.

I got sick of telling them to just ask and coming home to my things gone or ruined so I bought a handle that locks when I'm not there.

My mum says it's a bit far and could be a safety issue if I'm in my room and something happens.

I told her when I am home it'll be unlocked but when I'm away I'll lock it.

She still says I'm being petty and taking it a bit far.

There’s a quiet kind of frustration that builds when your personal space stops feeling like your own. It’s not always about the missing items themselves. It’s about the slow erosion of respect, the sense that your boundaries exist, but no one feels obligated to honor them.

In this situation, the OP wasn’t simply reacting to a missing hoodie or spilled bedding. She was responding to a repeated pattern where her requests were acknowledged, then ignored. That kind of inconsistency often creates a deeper emotional response than a one-time mistake.

Her mother and sister didn’t openly reject her boundary, which almost makes it harder. They agreed, but their behavior didn’t follow through. Over time, that disconnect can feel dismissive, even if no harm was intended. Locking the door wasn’t just about protecting belongings. It was an attempt to regain a sense of control in an environment that had become unpredictable.

Looking at it from another angle, her family might not see their actions as violations in the same way she does. In many households, shared spaces blur personal ownership, especially between siblings. What feels like “borrowing” to one person can feel like “disrespect” to another.

There’s also a subtle emotional dynamic at play. When someone begins enforcing firmer boundaries, others may interpret it as rejection or escalation, even if it’s simply self-protection. Her mother’s concern about safety might be genuine, yet it also shifts the focus away from the original issue: repeated disregard for clear requests.

Psychological research supports this tension. Experts note that boundary violations, even small and repeated ones, can significantly impact emotional well-being because they signal a lack of respect for autonomy.

According to therapists cited in Psychology Today, consistent boundary crossing can lead to resentment and emotional withdrawal, especially when communication has already been attempted but not respected.

Similarly, Verywell Mind explains that healthy boundaries are essential for maintaining trust and personal identity, particularly in close family relationships where roles can become overly entangled.

This context makes the OP’s decision feel less like pettiness and more like a practical response to a pattern that hasn’t changed. When verbal boundaries fail, people often turn to physical ones. A lock becomes less about control over others and more about restoring predictability for oneself.

A more grounded way forward may not be removing the lock, but reframing the situation. Boundaries tend to hold better when they are consistent and paired with clear consequences, not just repeated requests.

If her family begins to see that access is tied to respect, the dynamic may slowly shift. At the same time, keeping the door unlocked while she’s home addresses the safety concern without undoing her need for protection.

In the end, this isn’t about a locked door. It’s about whether someone’s space, belongings, and voice are taken seriously.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors backed the lock as justified after repeated disrespect of boundaries

Particular_Title42 − NTA. They have shown they won't leave your possessions alone.

I don't see any other solution other than locking your door or moving out.

Unlikely-Low-8132 − NTA and not petty - they are just mad they cannot shop your bedroom anymore.

paganliam − Petty would be it happening once and you never letting it go and getting the lock.

However, it's not being petty when they keep disrespecting your personal space time and time again.

star_b_nettor − NTA At the very least, one of them is a thief. The door lock wouldn't be a problem if there wasn't a thief problem.

This group advised moving out, warning the situation could escalate further

shelltrice − NTA - it doesn't sounds like your sister faces any consequences for taking/ruining your things.

Not sure how old you are and if you pay rent, but moving out when you are able might be the best move.

Empty-Wind2366 − So it’s too much to ask for common respect so placing a boundary is suddenly too much?

Get outta here. It’s the classic “suck it up to keep the piece”. If you can, move out.

West_Course2329 − NTA, duh. Although - expect them to escalate - break the door, come in through the window if they can, or even a wall.

These commenters called out deeper issues, pointing to favoritism and lack of accountability

Any_Assumption_2023 − Sounds like mom is a thief, too, as well as sis.

andrey_not_the_goat − Maybe if your mom wasn't clearly playing favorites, you wouldn't be resorting to an additional security for your room. NTA.

louisa1925 − (My sister slept in my bed and spilled juice all over my bedding) And this is a petty reason by your Mums standard?

Sure bedding can be washed, but it shouldn't have had to be.

If you are anything like me, you wouldn't appreciate non-approved people putting their head on your pillows either.

This group suggested retaliation, proposing to invade their space to prove a point

cowboyselkie − NTAH, dw. also: this might be really a terrible idea but like.

What if you go in their rooms and rifle through their s__t and see if you can find anything that went missing.

This might make you an a__hole and will definitely go wrong if it turns out none of your stuff is there but like. idk man.

i'm really tired this might be a terrible idea please think carefully before doing this.

but like i said, NTA, that's a very reasonable solution to your issue edit: the reason i suggest you try to find your s__t is because

then not only will you get your stuff back (if it's there) you will also show them how violating it feels to be robbed like that

Initial-Comedian-797 − NTA. I’d be raiding their rooms for my stuff, and pouring juice on their damn beds. Disrespect gets matched.

These users agreed the behavior crossed normal limits, making the reaction reasonable

Irishqltr1 − Why was your sister sleeping in your bed? ?? To me, that is a bigger i__asion of privacy than her stealing!

changelingcd − Having any younger sibling automatically gives you the right to lock your bedroom door. NTA

maryjaneloveshistory − easy, NTA. next.

After being ignored again and again, the lock wasn’t about being petty. It felt like the only way left to protect what was hers. Respect had already been asked for, clearly and calmly, and nothing changed. So she drew a line in the simplest way she could.

Do you think locking the door was a reasonable boundary after repeated disrespect, or did she escalate things too far? How would you handle living in a space where your belongings never feel safe? Share your thoughts below!
