Tired Dad Loses Sleep To Noisy Neighbors, He Removes “Do Not Disturb” Sign For Petty Payback

A weary father from the Midwest had scrimped for years to gift his wife their first child-free escape in half a decade, a blissful trip to coastal Maine filled with rugged trails and mountain views. Exhausted after a full day outdoors, the couple collapsed into deep sleep, only to be jolted awake at 3 a.m. by the raucous pair next door: young women shrieking, doors banging repeatedly, and hallway noise echoing without end.

He held back at first, remembering his own wilder days, yet the second wave of disturbance pushed him past patience. In a quiet act of mischief, he slipped their “Do Not Disturb” sign off the door and let the consequences unfold naturally the next morning.

A dad finally gets a rare kid-free vacation in Maine, only to have noisy neighbors ruin his sleep.

'First vacation without kids in five years looking forward to uninterrupted sleep, awoken by party girls next door, gave them an unwelcome early rising'

I'm a 41 year old father of 3 kids under 9. I have never been able to afford a vacation let alone one without kids.

Saved up for a very long time to take my wife on her dream trip to Bar Harbor Maine (We live in Kansas City),

first night after a day of amazing hikes and boulder climbing to scenic peaks in Acadia National Park we fell sound asleep, until 3am.

That's when I hear the two 25-30 year old women next door squealing in the hallway and constantly opening and slamming their door.

I was young once, partied very hard well into my 30s, and I have a ton of patience, I gave them some grace at first. Didn't say anything.

Fell back asleep and 45 minutes later they are even louder through the wall and in and out slamming doors again.

I get up to say something and miss them as they are going back in the room.

Fully awake, I noticed the please do not disturb sign on their door, which I promptly snatched.

Spent 4am-7am reading in the lobby until my wife texted me asking where I was.

After we got ready and went out for breakfast I was there to see the maid knock and enter their room to wake them up and heard their reactions... miserable...

I gave the maid a tip of $50 bucks and apologized for their rudeness. It's the least I could do for making her catch a stray bullet.

TL/DR: woke up by rude chicks while on vacation, took their do not disturb sign and tipped the maid for waking them up.

*EDIT: Some people taking this way too seriously. It was petty and an entertaining story. I was annoyed and inconvenienced not furious.

I ended up going downstairs and reading a new book by the fire in the lobby. It ended up being enjoyable.

Also, I budgeted for the trip and sacrificed part of the $50 I was going to use to buy clothing or a memento from the trip for myself and gave...

This dad, after years of parenting three young kids, finally scored a rare escape with his wife. The first night promised bliss, until the wall-thumping, door-slamming festivities next door kicked off around 3 a.m. He gave them grace initially, even dozing off again briefly, but the repeat performance had him wide awake.

Instead of banging on the wall or calling the front desk right away, he opted for subtle justice: snatching their “Do Not Disturb” sign and heading to the lobby for some quiet reading by the fire.

Come morning, he witnessed the hungover duo getting a rude awakening from housekeeping and slipped the maid a generous $50 tip as a thank-you for her unwitting role in the payback.

The story highlights a classic divide: one side sees harmless fun, while the other views it as straight-up inconsiderate, especially in a shared space where everyone pays for rest.

Noise disturbances like slamming doors and hallway ruckus are a real threat to sleep quality. Research shows environmental noise fragments sleep, increasing awakenings and shifting time away from deep, restorative stages like slow-wave and REM sleep.

According to an update to the World Health Organization’s systematic review on environmental noise and sleep, there’s moderate-quality evidence linking higher nighttime traffic noise levels to greater self-reported sleep disturbance, with similar patterns for other sources.

Nocturnal noise can lead to shallower sleep overall, and people often wake up feeling tired, annoyed, with reduced well-being and cognitive performance the next day.

Experts note that these disruptions mimic endogenous sleep disorders, triggering stress responses and potentially contributing to longer-term issues if chronic. As researcher Demian Halperin explains, “Nocturnal environmental noise also provokes measurable biological changes in the form of a stress response, and clearly affects sleep architecture, as well as subjective sleep quality.”

When it comes to handling noisy neighbors in hotels, the consensus from travel pros and hospitality advice leans toward letting staff take the lead rather than going rogue. Calling the front desk allows them to enforce quiet hours or send security, avoiding potential escalation.

Direct confrontation risks drama, especially late at night with strangers. Many suggest white noise, earplugs, or room changes as backups, but reporting ensures the hotel addresses it systemically.

In this case, the dad’s low-key revenge worked out entertainingly. But the broader lesson? Protecting your rest is fair game by politely involving management often resolves things fastest while keeping the peace.

OP updates more details in the comment section.

mungrol − Update: I'm reading reddit in the lobby (Restless Leg Syndrome and can't sleep it's almost 5am) and talked to the receptionist that recommended hikes to us.

The people next door got charged a $200 smoking charge for w__d and were asked to leave the building

because they were climbing from balcony to balcony. Apparently multiple people called the front desk. Wow.

Some people suggest petty or retaliatory ways to deal with noisy neighbors.

[Reddit User] − I probably would’ve beat on the door a few times. And just as they fall asleep, do it again. Rinse repeat.

I bring my Bluetooth speaker with me when I travel. It’s waterproof and I listen to music when I shower.

I would’ve probably also play my music early in the morning against their wall. I hate loud neighbors. Ugh. I feel your pain.

Unique-Ad-9316 − A friend of ours lives near a college campus. He had some neighbor girls throw a huge party that went on until 4:00 am.

They just laughed at his request to tone it down. At 8:00 am he started up his lawn mower and mowed his yard.

The girls called the cops and wanted him arrested! The police told them there was nothing they could do.

Some people recommend directly contacting hotel staff to address disruptive guests.

Fluffy-Addition8817 − I’m confused on why you didn’t call reception and report them? They usually call or send someone to talk to them

Desperate_Set_7708 − I’ve always liked asking the front desk for a wake up call at 5 AM and another at 5:30.

IlikethequietZeppo − Thank you for compensating the maid

Some people share positive travel recommendations or unrelated hotel experiences.

Just-Another-Poster- − Love Bar Harbor. Gorham Mountain and Beech Mountain are awesome. There's so many more great hikes too.

I highly suggest getting breakfast at 2 Cats. Enjoy! Oh and those girls were sooooo rude.

grill_em_aII − You misspelled Bah Hahbuh

Some offer practical tips for handling hotel room signs or disturbances.

wolfie379 − Helpful hint: Most of the “do not disturb” signs have “please make up room” on the other side.

Flip it around and it’s easy to pass off as a drunk getting the sign mixed up.

Some share personal celebrity encounter stories from service jobs.

Rachel_Silver − I dated a woman who worked at Starbucks. Her previous SO, Rick, had also worked there for a while.

He waited on Robert Downey Jr., who was in town (Philadelphia) to make a movie. He was completely starstruck, and messed up the order.

RDJ went off on Rick, with the whole "how hard is your job" spiel. Rick was mortified.

This was right when RDJ was starting to work again after his "troubles". The next day, Rick was on a rant about RDJ,

going off about how at least Rick didn't have any trouble finding people to hire him.

He looked up, and saw RDJ was in line and could hear every word he said.

He stopped, but ended up having to wait on him again. RDJ didn't say a word outside of placing his order.

In the end, what began as a rare chance for rest turned into an unexpected lesson in boundaries and creative comeuppance. The dad got his quiet revenge without a single shout, and the noisy neighbors faced real repercussions from the hotel staff anyway.

Was his sign-snatching petty genius or just harmless fun? How would you handle relentless noise on a once-in-a-lifetime getaway, call the desk, knock politely, or plot your own subtle payback? Drop your thoughts below and let us know.
