Trans Man Refused To Lie About His Identity At A Pool, And A Stranger Started A Scene

in Social Issues

Sometimes, the hardest conflicts come from people expecting others to change themselves just to make a situation more comfortable for them. When personal identity, children, and public spaces collide, even a simple interaction can quickly become a heated argument.

The original poster (OP) is a transgender man who was enjoying a normal day at a local pool when another parent approached him with an unusual request. The woman wanted OP to explain his appearance to her child in a specific way, but OP refused to claim something that was not true about himself.

The situation escalated when the woman accused him of exposing inappropriate ideas to children and involved the pool staff. Read on to see how Reddit reacted to this unexpected confrontation and whether OP handled the situation correctly.

'AITAH for not lying to someone’s kid?'

So I’m trans FTM (female to male) and for the most part, I look like a guy, I have a masculine body, haircut and and especially my face since

I have pretty good facial hair since I started T when I was 16. The most feminine part about me is that I have boobs.

Well when I go swimming, I wear swim trunks and a bikini top, because I hate swim shirts and my boobs are too big for tape.

Yesterday I was swimming At my local pool and while I was laying down some kid and her mom came up to me.

The mom proceeds to tell me to explain to her kid how “I’m a girl, I just have hirsutism”

I don’t even know what the heck that was until she brought it up to me and also i’m not gonna just lie to this kid and tell them I...

and explain what that is because I don’t have it.

So I proceeded to this woman “uh no I’m a guy” she seems to get annoyed at the response and proceeds to tell me

“no your just a woman who has hirsutism” I stare at her and I tell her “no I don’t even know what that is” she ends up,

walking away with her kid and I thought that was the end of it until she proceeds to walk up to me without her kid this time

and starts yelling at me how I’m trying to spread my gayness to the kids and why I couldn’t just lie to her kid and say I was a woman.

I just start laughing and her and she gets furious and tries to tell the lifeguard that I was grooming kids

(I didn’t hear exactly what she said, but it had to do something with me trying to groom kids)

the lifeguard comes over to talk to me and ask what happened I told him what happened and said sorry and that he will handle her after

that I see him talking to the lady she ends up, screaming at him to kick me out

and he ends up getting a supervisor and they end up, kicking her her kid out.

I didn’t feel bad about it at all because she was the one who was causing a disturbance.

But when I talk to some of my friends about it, they said I should’ve just lied to ease that woman’s mind.

I told him why should I lie I didn’t even know what she was saying I had.

They told me if I don’t wanna lie then I should just wear a shirt or not go to pools.

Now I’m having second thoughts then maybe I just should’ve lied or wore a shirt to the pool

but I also feel like that woman had no right to do what she did. So AITAH?

Sometimes people ask for “peace” when what they are really asking someone else to do is hide a part of themselves. In this situation, the OP was not refusing to make a child comfortable. He was refusing to tell a false story about who he was. The conflict was not created by a person existing differently; it came from another adult expecting that person to manage her own beliefs and discomfort.

The emotional tension here involves several layers. The OP was simply trying to enjoy a normal activity at a public pool while presenting himself in a way that matched his identity. The mother, however, appears to have felt responsible for controlling how her child interpreted what she saw.

Instead of explaining that people can look different and that bodies vary, she attempted to make the OP participate in a story that was not true. When he corrected her, she interpreted that as a challenge rather than a boundary.

There is also a broader psychological dynamic at play. Parents often want to shape their children’s understanding of the world, but children are naturally exposed to differences everywhere: appearances, abilities, cultures, families, and personalities.

Trying to eliminate every unfamiliar experience can sometimes teach children that differences are something frightening or shameful rather than simply something that exists.

A useful perspective is that the OP did not approach the child with a lesson, argument, or explanation about gender. He was not seeking attention or trying to influence the child. He answered honestly when directly asked to participate in a conversation about himself. The mother could have chosen to end the interaction calmly instead of escalating it.

Psychologist Eli Coleman has written about transgender identity and the importance of respecting people’s lived experiences and reducing stigma.

Research in transgender health consistently shows that acceptance and respectful treatment are associated with better mental health outcomes, while rejection and invalidation can contribute to significant distress. National Center for Transgender Equality resources

This insight connects directly to the situation because the disagreement was not really about a swimming outfit or a child’s question. It was about whether the OP should be required to deny his own identity to make another person more comfortable.

Respect does not require everyone to have identical beliefs, but it does require acknowledging that other people are allowed to describe themselves honestly.

The mother’s concern about what her child learns is understandable in the sense that parents naturally guide their children. However, guiding a child does not mean demanding strangers provide a preferred explanation. A parent can decide how to discuss differences with their own child without asking another person to pretend to be someone they are not.

The OP’s friends may have been focusing on avoiding conflict, but avoiding conflict is not always the same as doing the right thing. Telling a stranger to hide themselves can place the burden of someone else’s discomfort onto the person being judged.

The more balanced lesson is that children benefit from age-appropriate honesty, not from being taught that unfamiliar people must be explained away. The OP did not create a difficult situation by existing openly. He simply refused to become part of a lie that was never his responsibility to tell.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors supported OP’s right to be authentic and rejected the idea of hiding identity for others’ comfort

Fit_Cranberry2867 − You're not required to make anyone else more comfortable with your existence.

The only way to make it so people are more comfortable with the existence of trans people is to just unapologetically be yourself. NTA

Hazel2468 − NTA You don't need to lie. That rando made it a big deal and made some crap up about you.

YOU are under no obligation to make bigots comfortable, plain and simple.

She came up to YOU and asked you to explain yourself to her kid instead of doing her damn job as a parent. Honestly I would have done the same....

Dangerous_Guest6604 − u did not have to lie at all and ur friends are lowkey assholes for saying that u should’ve essentially misgendered urself,

lied to a child, and minimized your own existence and identity to make a transphobic/h__ophobic woman

feel better about lying to her child for her own gain. hard nta and u might wanna rethink ur friends :(

These commenters criticized the parent for involving a stranger in explaining personal identity issues to her child

mocha_lattes_ − There was zero reason to even include you in this if she wanted to lie to her kid.

She could have just said "it's rude to ask but my guess is it's a woman with hirsutism. " You didn't need to be involved at all with what she...

She could have lied all she wanted and gone about her life secure in the fact that she 'protected' her kid from the existence of a transperson.

You never should feel obligated to lie about your existence or who your are for other people's comfort. NTA

seestars9 − Absolutely NTAH. Yikes. I can't even imagine asking a stranger to explain to my kid why they look the way they do.

These Redditors viewed the parent’s behavior as prejudiced and encouraged respecting people’s differences

Supernova7112 − NTA Just sounds like a bigoted woman. Poor kid having to grow up with a mom like that.

SoonerRed − If she didn't want to risk her kid "catching the queer" from you, she could have left you alone in the first place. NTA

Over_Ad8762 − What ever happened to people minding their own damn business.

Is this woman walking her kid up to every person that look “different” to her and is forcing her explanations upon them?

These users believed OP’s friends were wrong for expecting OP to lie or minimize themselves.

Dry_Cauliflower4562 − Holy s__t you need new friends

bdouble0w0 − I had to look it up myself and hirsutism is when a woman has really dark body hair in a masculine fashion. NTA for not misgendering yourself.

Should the swimmer’s friends apologize for telling him to hide himself? How should public facilities respond when ordinary identity is falsely portrayed as a threat to children?
