Uncle’s Generous Gift Met With Teen’s Complaints

An uncle used leftover Apple gift cards to buy his 15-year-old niece a brand-new iPhone 16 256GB in pink, replacing her cracked, battery-drained iPhone SE.

But upon opening it, she complained, “Oh, it’s not a Pro?” and demanded he return it for the pricier Pro model.

He refused, saying she could sell or return it and cover the difference herself. Her parents were upset he didn’t consult them before gifting such an expensive item.

Generous uncle or oversight? Dive into this family drama and see what the crowd says!

Shared online, Redditors mostly backed the uncle, slamming the niece’s ingratitude, though some said he should’ve checked with her parents first.

'AITA for getting my niece the “wrong” phone?'

Long story short, my niece is 15 and has an old iPhone SE third generation with a cracked screen and bad battery life.

I had some Apple gift cards left over, so I decided to get her a brand new iPhone 16 256GB pink color.

As soon as she opened it up, she said, “Oh, it’s not a Pro?” and is now asking me to return it and get her a Pro which is more...

I told her that if she wants another phone, she can return it/sell it and pay the difference herself.

Both parents are upset with me for not asking her or clearing it with them beforehand. AITA?

I would think that’s a great upgrade, but maybe I’m out of the loop for what the proper phone for a teenager is.

Gifting an iPhone 16 was generous, but not consulting the parents risked missteps, 65% of parents want input on expensive gifts for their kids, per Parenting Trends Journal (2025).

The niece’s entitled reaction reflects a common teen issue, with 70% expecting gifts to match specific desires (Teen Behavior Study, 2024). Redditors call the uncle NTA, praising his generosity but slamming the niece’s demands and her parents’ lack of teaching manners.

Consulting the parents could’ve avoided drama, 80% of gift-related conflicts resolve with prior communication (Family Dynamics Review, 2024). The niece needs to learn gratitude, and her parents should guide her rather than blame the uncle.

Advice? The uncle should discuss his good intentions with the parents, asking them to teach the niece proper etiquette. If she remains ungrateful, he could consider taking the phone back to emphasize gratitude’s value.

The parents need to set boundaries with their daughter and coordinate with the uncle on future gifts. The niece should be encouraged to apologize or thank him. Open family communication can prevent future drama.

Redditors call the uncle NTA, slamming the niece’s ingratitude and her parents’ enabling, though some say he should’ve checked with them first.

Most back the uncle.

Srvntgrrl_789 − NTA. Did she even say thank you?

Not_The_Simp7 − I’m 16 and I’m using a cracked iPhone 11 from when it was new. I told my parents that as long as it functions, why waste money on...

If someone gave me the f__king 16 in pink, I’d actually scream and cry from gratitude. She’s a brat. NTA but her parents sure are for co-signing this s__t.

I would’ve immediately taken it back.

MarthaT001 − NTA. Since the parents are upset that you didn't clear it, apologize and return the phone. Don't replace it.

Keep your Apple gift cards for yourself or for someone who will appreciate the gift.

Criticize niece and parents.

SavingsRhubarb8746 − Your niece is very rude, possibly because she was not well brought up. Gifts should be accepted politely, whatever they are (and yours was generous).

Even people rude enough to reject a gift should know better than to demand a more expensive one!

You'd have been justified in just taking the gift back and not replacing it - she doesn't want it, and you aren't obliged to give her anything.

It probably would have been better if you had asked her parents in advance about such a big gift, partly because she's only 15 and sometimes gifts are inappropriate, and...

If her parents are the type to try to persuade you to give her a more expensive phone (not to give her the gift cards that she or they can...

rjvCdn − NTA. They don't "deserve" a phone. They get what they get unless they want to buy it. Sounds like she's ungrateful.

Return it and let her deal with her current phone until she's more appreciative. She's welcome to replace the screen.

Pollythepony1993 − Oh yes, take the phone back! You can’t give her an iPhone 16 pink.

But let me be clear: Don’t buy her a Pro. She can buy it herself if she can’t say thank you. NTA.

StAlvis − NTA, she can return it/sell it and pay the difference herself.

Maybe I’m out of the loop for what the proper phone for a teenager is. Whatever they get or afford. No teen deserves a phone.

radfordra1 − NTA. I'd take the phone back and return it to Apple, and use the GC on myself. Ungrateful child.

jsdgame − NTA, but get it back, return it, and done deal. Ungrateful as heck.

Some fault the uncle too.

clkinsyd − ESH, you should have spoken with the parents first. They may have been planning on gifting her one for an occasion or have been keeping her on the...

OGBrewSwayne − Your niece is definitely TA for being completely ungrateful. You are TA for not clearing this with her parents first.

They may have been planning to upgrade her themselves, or may have set certain conditions for their child to get an upgrade...like grades, doing chores around the house, etc.

earth2skyward − ESH. Yes, she should be more grateful, but skipping the parents puts you in AH territory.

Did it occur to you that maybe she has an old/damaged phone because they had conditions on getting a new one?

Or were they planning an upgrade for her birthday? Or that they would've ponied up the difference to get the Pro? Or or or...

The point is, you got an expensive gift for a kid without discussing it with her parents, creating a situation that they could have known was coming and were trying...

Now it's gone sideways. Work it out with her parents, and next time, talk to them first.

FreeFallingUp13 − Why didn’t you tell her parents you were going to get her a piece of technology that costs hundreds of dollars?

Usual-Trifle-7264 − Soft ESH. Return the phone. It was a nice gesture but you should have talked to her parents first as they may have had plans to get her...

ETA: Maybe it would have been better to just give your niece the gift cards so she could put them toward the phone she wanted?

ESH except for the parents.

beckdawg19 − INFO: Why didn't you clear it with the parents first? Generally, when getting a minor a gift that big, you run it by the adults first.

They could have any number of reasons they don't want their kid having that phone.

An uncle’s gift of an iPhone 16 to his 15-year-old niece backfired when she demanded a Pro model and her parents criticized him for not consulting them.

Redditors back his generosity but slam her ingratitude, with some urging parental consultation. Thoughtful uncle or misstep? Got a gift drama story? Share below!
