A 33-year-old vegetarian was casually scrolling when a stranger equated meat-eaters with the worst kind of criminals. Fed up, she defended her carefully sourced eggs and dairy, then lightly asked a self-righteous vegan if her lipstick and shampoo were actually cruelty-free.

Silence at first. Hours later, a furious friend stormed into her DMs claiming the vegan had collapsed into hysterics, screaming that her entire moral world was ruined after discovering hidden animal ingredients in her beauty products. The vegetarian, who simply pointed out the inconsistency suddenly became the villain, labeled heartless and damned to hell for daring to hold up a mirror.

A vegetarian defended her choices online and accidentally caused a militant vegan’s meltdown over non-vegan makeup.

'AITAH for making a vegan cry and have a meltdown?'

Let me explain it all. I 33F, am a vegetarian. I do not care about what other people eat.

My bf eats meat, the only deal is that he cooks the meat because after all these years being vegetarian, the smell does repulse me a bit.

Anyway, earlier today I saw a post about how meateaters (as they were called) were being compared to pedophiles.

I was disgusted by this and told the maker that he is the reason that we as vegans and vegetarians get attacked.

A woman attacked me later on, saying I was a murderer because only vegans were pure.

I explained to her that I get milk where the calves are not removed and eggs from chickens that have more roaming space then my dogs do in our apartment.

Well, that was clearly not enough and it was somehow my fault that baby animals fell without their mother and how I was eating babies.

(Not badly meant but when there is no rooster... no babies. And the owner has no rooster.)

I got annoyed at her and asked her if she even knew about everything she was talking about.

I asked her if she even paid attention to her shampoo, conditioner, make-up, nail polish, etc. If her products were even vegan.

Because if she was going to attack other people on their diet choices (she was arguing with several people) she had to first make sure she was perfect.

Apparently that is where it went wrong. The lady stopped responding. I just shrugged it off until I got a pm several hours later.

A friend of the vegan lady lashed out to me how her friend had a mental breakdown finding out that her make-up and other products were not vegan.

The vegan lady apparently was throwing tantrums and her friend couldn't calm her down.

This is where I might be the AH. I told the friend that it was the vegan lady her own fault.

She decided to verbally attack people on the internet on a very inappropriate comparison and she was calling people murderers.

Now she could join the murderer club for not even knowing about it all.

And that maybe if she stopped judging people on their diets, her meltdowns wouldn't happen.

The friend called me heartless, a monster, an AH and that I would burn in hell. `And I should apologize.

Imo, I don't think it is my fault that the lady didn't even know that a lot of products contain animal by products.

I also don't think I should apologize for sharpening her knowledge.. Aita? Could I have brought it on a bit less brute? Or at least apologize? Should I apologize?

Edit: Thank you everyone for the answers. I'm still reading through them all.

For those who said it was made up. I wish.... it was my reality suddenly though.

I have both ladies blocked and am not going to bother. After a look on their profile it showed they were older then me.

And having a meltdown tantrum... no. The last bit of information I got from the friend was that "vegan" lady was screaming how I ruined her life.

I can't say thank you on each single comment so I do it in big here. Thank you very much.

Edit 2: I got called names by her. Not once did I NOT expect she didn't know. As many people have proven, it is quite common knowledge.

I did not call her names once. Nor did I react on a vegan post. It was a post from a cow farmer.

Edit 3: I get eggs from a backyard flock who have a garden bigger then my whole apartment and on top of 7 kilo of daily grain offered they roam...

The owner also keeps the chicken until they pass away of old age. I would act like a chicken for having their life!

Edit 4: Yes, there are farmers that keep calves with the mother. Just like any mammal does the mother animal overproduce milk,

that gets taken off while the calf still has the needed amount of milk. Only rejected calves are handfed.

Almost every single cowbreed is bred in such a way that they overproduce milk.

And as most women know, a lot of milk holding up hurts a lot. Imagine producing 80 litres a day

and not a way to get rid of it. A ruptured udder is a death sentence for a cow btw.

We’ve all been there, seeing someone who’s turned a personal choice into a moral crusade can feel like walking into the world’s most exhausting TED Talk. What started as a defense against an outrageous comparison spiraled into an accidental vegan identity crisis. And honestly, it’s peak internet.

On one side you have the vegetarian OP who sources milk from farms that keep calves with moms and eggs from backyard hens living better than most city dogs.

On the other, a self-proclaimed “pure” vegan who apparently never Googled “carmine” or “lanolin” in her life. When gently challenged, she didn’t reflect, she imploded. It’s a masterclass in cognitive dissonance: preach perfection, but skip the homework.

Broadening out, this touches on a real phenomenon. Research shows that guilt over inconsistencies is common among vegans. A 2023 study surveyed vegans and found that 77% experienced guilt related to their ethical choices, often leading to emotional distress when confronting past or unintentional harm.

Psychologist Melanie Joy, PhD, explained in a 2015 article: “When other vegans reinforce toxic perfectionism, then, the results can be devastating.” In this case, the meltdown stemmed from the sudden confrontation with her own inconsistencies.

The broader issue? Performative activism fatigue is real. A 2023 study published in Appetite found that exposure to depictions of vegan protests led to more negative attitudes toward vegans and greater endorsement of meat eating compared to a control group.

When the loudest voices prioritize purity tests over progress, everyone loses, including the animals they claim to protect.

The funniest part? The vegan wasn’t just casually opinionated. She was out there swinging “murderer” labels like confetti-style at everyone who dared touch dairy. Yet the second someone nudged her toward her own bathroom cabinet, her entire worldview shattered like a dropped iPhone screen. Suddenly the accuser became the accused, and the only crime was… using the wrong blush for years.

It’s the ultimate internet plot twist: the person handing out moral report cards failed her own exam spectacularly. Most of us quietly Google “is this vegan?” at 2 a.m. while eating questionable snacks. She skipped that step, built her identity on purity, and when reality knocked her door, she kicked it down screaming.

Meanwhile, the vegetarian OP, who never asked for the smoke, ended up as the surprise villain for simply saying, “Hey, maybe check your lipstick ingredients before you call strangers baby-killers.” Classic case of dishing the sermon but choking on the footnote.

So what’s the healthy way forward? Gentle education over public shaming, celebrating incremental change, and remembering that nobody wakes up ethically perfect. If you’re going to climb on the moral high horse, at least check the saddle for leather first.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

Some people say OP did nothing wrong and should not apologize because the vegan lady was preaching without knowing the facts.

deshi_mi − So you tried to help that vegan lady to become better vegan lady. It's not your problem that she is a bad vegan lady.

gastropod43 − NTA You did not make her cry. Her poor choice of makeup did.

LoubyAnnoyed − NTA. If you’re going to be evangelical about a vegan lifestyle, you really should make sure you’re actually living one first.

WoodedSpys − She was uneducated on a topic she preached about, you informed her thusly and she freaked out about the truth.

You do not have anything to apologize for, if anything, you should get the apology

because you saved her from years of using non vegan products. NTA, good for you

Some people believe OP should not apologize and the vegan lady lacks emotional maturity for reacting so strongly.

TheCrappyGamerIsBack − Honestly, no. Don't apologize. I'm a pescetarian and in my opinion, it's nearly impossible to be "truly" vegan because something will always slip through.

(Like, maggots can be in food legally in the states)

Bobd1964 − No. Some people are zealots.

geekylace − NTA Do not apologize! This is a perfect example of not being able to take what you dish out.

It doesn’t sound like this woman has the emotional maturity to manage her own emotions. That is not your responsibility. I

t’s a shame that her friends are enabling her bad behaviour and sadly I do not think she will self reflect and learn a single thing from this interaction.

NGL - I laughed incredibly hard when you said she had a breakdown. I have cousins who are vegans who are so incredibly respectful and if you can’t be respectful...

Some people point out that zealous or hypocritical vegans deserve to be called out.

DamnitGravity − Facebook vegans are to veganism what Isis are to Islam. A small but loud and persistent minority,

who missed the point of the original peaceful message, and for now some reason are choosing to take it out on bacon. - Daniel Sloss, Jigsaw

alv269 − NTA. People like that lady are insufferable and deserve to be put in their place. I'm betting that she also eats gummy bears.

Some people question the claim that dairy calves are never removed from their mothers.

14kinikia − Excuse me, Op Did you say you drink cows milk and the calf is not removed?

If you are consuming the calf’s milk what do you expect the calf is consuming? Or does this have some other meaning? I’m confused

PrinceBunnyBoy − It's impossible to have a dairy operation and not k__l or send away the calves.

Dairy farms aren't going to have 20 male calves just frolicking in a field, especially small ones.

It's incredibly expensive, and for egg producers they come from a hatchery where males are gassed or macerated.

At the end of the day, one woman tried to defend her reasonable middle-ground choices and accidentally triggered an existential crisis in someone who built their identity on superiority. Was the clap-back a tad spicy? Maybe. Necessary? The comment section says yes.

Would you have apologized, or blocked and moved on with zero regrets? How do you handle self-righteous strangers on the internet who can dish it but can’t take it? Drop your verdict below!
