Wedding Guest Shouts Drug Accusations During Vows, Then His Wife Calls the Groom Mentally Ill

in Social Issues

Weddings are supposed to bring together the people who care most about a couple, but even one guest’s behavior can leave a lasting shadow over the day.

Jokes stop being harmless when they involve public humiliation, private medical information, or accusations that could disrupt the ceremony.

The original poster (OP) married his longtime partner in a small celebration attended by close friends and family.

One guest, the husband of a friend OP had known for decades, loudly questioned whether OP was under the influence just before the vows and later announced details about his health to nearby guests.

When OP asked for an explanation and apology, his friend defended her husband’s conduct as military humor before directing harsh accusations at the newlyweds.

Read on to see how people reacted to this painful wedding conflict.

'My witness’s husband tried to humiliate me at my own wedding... twice?'

After 13 years together, I (50M) married my beautiful wife Lisa (45F) this

past December. We had a small and beautiful wedding with 20 guests.

I’ve known Janet (50F) for over 20 years. Something like a decade ago,

Janet married Thor (M50s), and we attended their wedding, which was a

lovely backyard affair. Over the years, we’ve been to their home for Easter

and Christmas dinners many times.. It seemed like a no-brainer to ask Janet

to be my witness.

Thor is a retired ex-military veteran who fought in Afghanistan. He is LOUD.

His normal talking volume is the equivalent of someone else shouting. I

don’t know if it’s due to hearing damage from his service or if that’s just his

personality, but it’s noticeable.

I've never had trouble with the guy as far as I know, and we were always

friendly with one another. I once 3D-printed him a puzzle piece after one of

his dogs ate it.

As the ceremony was starting, I was walking to my spot for the vows. Thor

and Janet were seated in the front row. As I passed Thor, he suddenly

shouted, “How high are you? How many drugs are you on?” The

commissioner was standing right behind him while he was shouting; I even

have photos of this time and space. (He was so loud that my parents later

asked me, “What was Janet’s husband talking about you being on drugs?”).

I hissed back, “I’m not. Shut up,” and kept walking.

The ceremony itself went smoothly, aside from me accidentally saying

“Lisa” during the “I, OP, hereby declare…” part. Everyone laughed, it was

nice moment during a serious event.

After the signing, guests were crowding around to congratulate me.

Suddenly, Thor appeared in front of me again, shouting, “Are you in pain?.

Me: “Not the time or place, dude.”. Thor: “How much pain are you in?”. Me:

” Not. The time. Or place.”. Janet’s mother, Marilyn, who was standing

beside me, asked, “Oh, why is OP in pain?”. Thor loudly replied, “Because he

has a hernia!”. Marilyn exclaimed, “Oh, I don’t want to hear about hernias!”,

in a disgusted tone.. A few days later, I brought this to Janet’s attention,

and told her:

- Thor’s shouting about me being “on drugs” wasn’t just disrespectful, it

could have jeopardized the entire proceedings. The commissioner could

have halted the ceremony if they believed someone wasn’t sober.

- Thor’s shouting about my hernia was a complete betrayal of trust. My

personal medical information is private, and certainly not something to

announce to an entire wedding.

When I asked why he did these things, Janet’s explanation was that Thor’s

ex-military background meant he had worked in a toxic environment and

“can’t tell right from wrong anymore.” Then she said he was “just joking,”

and that’s “the kind of humor military people have, like finding eyeballs

floating in your coffee” (I have no idea what that’s in reference to, not sure

if I want to know). Finally, she said, “If you need any kind of support, feel

free to reach out to us.”

So, my wife replied “If your offer of support is genuine, then you would ask

Thor to apologize for his disrespectful behavior.”

Instead of apologizing, Janet sent my wife a long rant accusing me of

having a mental illness, ending with “not to gaslight lol.”. My wife cried

when she read it.. One of my oldest friends made my wife cry.. Guess the

offer wasn’t genuine.

The really confusing part is that they gave us an expensive Ninja Woodfire

outdoor oven as a wedding gift. I have no idea why you’d buy someone

something large and expense like that… and then try to humiliate them on

their wedding day.. The oven is awesome, by the way, it makes fantastic ribs.

Weddings have a way of preserving emotions in unusually sharp detail.

People may forget ordinary gatherings, but they remember who made them feel loved, embarrassed, protected, or disrespected during one of the most meaningful days of their lives.

That is why Thor’s behavior still feels confusing: it interrupted moments that should have belonged entirely to OP and Lisa.

The problem was not simply that Thor was naturally loud or had an unusual sense of humor.

He publicly accused the groom of being intoxicated immediately before the ceremony, then announced private medical information during the celebration.

Both comments placed OP in an awkward position in front of relatives, guests, and the wedding commissioner.

OP attempted to shut the conversation down twice, yet Thor continued. Those were clear social boundaries, not subtle hints that could reasonably have been missed.

Janet’s response made the injury worse.

She offered several explanations, military culture, poor judgment, dark humor but none included genuine accountability.

A difficult professional background might help explain someone’s communication style, yet it does not automatically excuse humiliating another person.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that trauma-related symptoms can affect relationships through anger, irritability, detachment, and communication difficulties.

It also emphasizes that trauma reactions vary considerably and should not be assumed simply because someone served in the military.

That distinction matters. Janet was effectively diagnosing Thor from a distance while using his service to shield him from consequences.

Saying he “can’t tell right from wrong anymore” is especially serious.

If that were literally true, he would need professional support and closer attention, not permission to behave however he wishes.

If it was merely an excuse, it unfairly stereotypes veterans as incapable of basic respect.

The expensive wedding gift does not cancel what happened. Generosity and disrespect can exist in the same relationship.

Thor may genuinely like OP and still have behaved cruelly or recklessly.

People sometimes believe that a gift, longstanding friendship, or humorous intention should outweigh the impact of their actions, but damaged trust is repaired through acknowledgment and changed behavior, not through appliances.

The American Psychological Association notes that betrayal can seriously damage relationships, while reparative actions such as an apology can help make forgiveness possible.

Janet and Thor were given a straightforward opportunity to repair the harm. Instead, Janet attacked OP’s mental health and upset his wife.

OP is not unreasonable for reconsidering this friendship. He does not need to prove Thor intended humiliation.

It is enough that a boundary was crossed, the harm was explained clearly, and both accountability and compassion were refused.

Sometimes an old friendship ends not because of one offensive joke, but because the response afterward reveals that respect was never as mutual as it seemed.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters wondered whether Thor had a serious cognitive or mental health issue affecting his behavior.

Wandering_Song − Does this guy have a traumatic brain injury? Like, not

being sarcastic at all.

Interesting-Moose527 − THOR ARE YOU HAVING A MENTAL CRISIS RIGHT

NOW? It's sad he has no filter. Even sadder that instead of trying to help

him, Janet just doubles down and makes excuses for him.

Clocktopu5 − Can't tell right from wrong? Gtfoh with that, dude is an i__ot.

Maybe he has autism or a tbi, maybe there is some thing that can be

pointed to that explains how he is.

Maybe, we don't know that so we have to go with what we do know is this

man is an i__ot and I would assume when people see him out in public they

sometimes look around for his chaperone. What the heck

These commenters rejected Janet’s claim that Thor’s conduct was normal military humor

MCKelly13 − I’m in the military. These excuses are untrue and stupid

despicable-coffin − 23 year military vet here. No, we don’t “joke” like that at

weddings. This is a Thor-thing.

13auricles − How did Thor know about your hernia? Janet’s excuses are

really gross. “He can’t tell right from wrong now? ” WTH does that mean?

Just joking? It’s not a joke, no one is laughing. And that’s military humor?

Well, I’ve been around AD and Retired Military folks for decades now. None

of them “joke” like that.

I’d say Thor has something going on and Janet is deflecting.

These commenters advised ending or distancing the friendship because both Thor and Janet seemed unsafe or unwilling to take responsibility

Scenarioing − "Janet’s explanation was that Thor’s ex-military background

meant he had worked in a toxic environment and “can’t tell right from

wrong anymore. ” \---If true, then he is unsafe to be around anymore.

Unfortunate as the cause it may be. "Then she said he was “just joking,” \---

If true, then he is unsafe to be around anymore.

"Finally, she said, “If you need any kind of support, feel free to reach out to

us. ”" \---Since it is unsafe to be around this man anymore or give anyone

private information that may be passed on to him, that would be unsafe as

well. "Janet sent my wife a long rant accusing me of having a mental illness,

ending with “not to gaslight lol.

” \---She is also unsafe to associate with. Sorry for the bad news. This relationship is done. There is almost certainly other social interactions that

are ruined by or will never start due to these kind of behaviors.

NoSummer1345 − Friendship over. I’d say return the oven but if it makes great ribs….

Big-University-1132 − So, my wife replied “If your offer of support is

genuine, then you would ask Thor to apologize for his disrespectful

behavior. ” I like her 😁 you found a good one, OP. I’m sorry about Janet

and Thor though. I genuinely don’t know what would make him act like

that, but I would assume Janet’s defense of him is due to embarrassment

or something like that.

Which, while understandable, isn’t right. She should have apologized to you

and your wife I know you’re not looking for advice, but I’d take a step back

from your relationship with Janet for the moment, and definitely don’t

interact with Thor (unless he decides to genuinely apologize, though you

still wouldn’t be obligated to). And enjoy your oven!

Have you tried making pizza with it yet? I feel like that would be amazing

These commenters believed the extravagant gift was another way for Thor to make the situation about himself

librarianpanda − This is the wildest woodfire oven ad I've ever seen

Resolution_Usual − I'd like to take a stab at answering your question as to

why they sent an expensive gift. It's the same reason he acted like a

wanker: to make it all about him.

OP trusted a longtime friend to stand beside him on one of the most important days of his life, only for her husband to turn the ceremony into a stage for embarrassing comments and private disclosures.

A joke about medical information or sobriety might seem harmless to the person making it, but the impact is what matters, especially during a wedding.

Do you think Janet should have defended Thor’s behavior, or was OP right to expect a sincere apology?
