Wedding Guests Dismantle the Decorations Before the Reception, Leaving the Planner in Tears

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

A wedding day may look effortless to guests, but behind the scenes there are often hours of planning, creativity, and hard work.

When someone disrespects that effort, it can turn a joyful occasion into a frustrating memory.

The original poster (OP) was a wedding planner who believed every couple deserved a beautiful celebration, no matter their budget.

During one event, she poured her energy into creating stunning floral arrangements for the reception.

But just before guests arrived, a group of people made a choice that left her devastated and angry.

Keep reading to discover why the bride had to step in and what happened afterward.

Wedding planner watches months of work get ruined

Wedding Guests Dismantle the Decorations Before the Reception, Leaving the Planner in Tears
not the actual photo

'Arrive early to take all the flowers?'Wedding and event planner here:. I have so many stories but the one that

really made me angry ….

I do a lot of weddings for low budget brides. I figure everybody should

have the same opportunity to have a nice event regardless of their budget.

Trust me, I have learned from this since.

But at this time I was young and dumb and full of energy. The event was at

a large public park that did have a giant enclosed building where they held

their reception. Sadly, the church service was 30 miles away. So, at this

event I was their florist. I decorated the church and immediately left to get

to the reception site ready ahead of the guests.

Unfortunately, my assistant wasn’t available for this event so I had to do it

all by myself. OK no problem just turn on Turbo mode! Eventually I was

close to finishing decorating the reception. This included very large and tall

glass centerpieces with flowers, candles and glitter scattered below. There

were about 15 tables.

I finally had a chance to go to the bathroom so I quickly ducked out and as I

returned the room was a complete mess! Some of the guests had arrived

early and they were removing the centerpieces from each table and placing

them all in front of their seat. Like WTF?

First of all, who does this? (I found the answer out later) I had spent a long

time creating these centerpieces and getting everything to this location

within the bride and groom’s budget.

And second, the bride and groom hadn’t seen the room set up yet! I was

livid to say the least. All that work for nothing.

I walked over and I screamed at them saying, “what in the hell are you

doing?” Only to be answered with - it’s Spanish tradition that people

reserve the centerpieces for them to take home after they event”. After.

The. Event.

I lost it I screamed and cried and told them how rude they were. I had

about three tables to finish “resetting” when the bride walked in. She saw

me crying but she had not heard the exchange prior. The family tried to tell

her I was a b__ch so when she walked up she didn’t really say anything but

then she saw that I had been crying. I explained to her how hard I have

been working (she knew-she absolutely positively understood and knew)

and that I left for two seconds to go to the bathroom and when I came

back the entire room was disassembled.

All I know is the bride went over to the table that still had three

centerpieces on it and the next thing I knew those people were leaving -

early and empty-handed.

The entitlement of some people is just asinine. No I do not miss this

vocation that I spent my entire career polishing. I do however miss being

around flowers all the time.

Sometimes the smallest moments reveal the biggest differences between appreciation and entitlement.

When someone spends hours creating something meaningful for a special occasion, watching that effort be dismissed or taken without permission can feel deeply personal.

The damage is not just to the work itself, but to the care and intention behind it.

In this situation, the planner was not simply upset about a few decorations being moved.

She had invested physical effort, creativity, and emotional energy into helping a couple create a beautiful wedding within a limited budget.

After rushing between locations and managing everything alone, seeing guests dismantle the room before the bride and groom had even experienced it understandably felt like a betrayal of that effort.

The conflict also came from a misunderstanding of expectations.

The guests may have believed they were following a tradition, but they acted without considering the person responsible for creating the environment.

A different perspective is that this story highlights how traditions can become complicated when people assume everyone understands the same rules.

In some cultures, taking wedding decorations home may be a familiar practice and a symbol of sharing the celebration.

However, traditions usually depend on timing and consent.

There is a significant difference between guests receiving a centerpiece after the event with the couple’s approval and guests removing carefully arranged decorations before the reception has even begun.

The problem was not necessarily the desire to take something home; it was the lack of communication and respect for the work involved.

Psychologists who study social behavior often discuss the concept of entitlement and how some people may focus heavily on their own expectations while overlooking the impact of their actions on others.

This helps explain why the planner’s reaction was so emotional.

From the guests’ perspective, the centerpieces may have looked like decorative items available for taking.

From the planner’s perspective, they represented hours of preparation, transportation, design choices, and a promise made to the couple.

The same object carried completely different meanings for each side.

The bride’s reaction also shows the importance of protecting the people who contribute to major life events.

She understood that the planner was not complaining over decorations; she was defending the care and effort that helped make her wedding possible.

Ultimately, celebrations rely on cooperation between many people.

Guests bring energy and support, while planners and vendors bring skill and labor.

Respecting both sides means remembering that beautiful moments do not appear by accident.

Behind every arrangement, centerpiece, and detail, there is often someone who worked hard to make the day memorable.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters shared similar experiences with guests taking decorations or food and stressed proper etiquette

MelissaRC2018 − My grandpa's family (his sisters) were very known to walk

into a wedding or grad party and go over to the cookie tray right when the

event started and dump them in containers and take them outside to their

cars BEFORE the party even started.

I learned about this (didn't see them much) when I graduated and heard my

grandma say to watch the food table and my mom explained it. They did

this at my mom's wedding and my grandma made them return the stuff.

We are very good with sharing to go trays and food, we want it out of our

houses type thing BUT after everyone got some. Only family members who

do this and their known as the ones to keep an eye on.

user9372889 − I was at a wedding once where they had to announce and

ask guests not to remove centrepieces or decorations because they were

rented. I was mortified. Like who is taking this stuff? Turns out lots of older

ladies apparently.

InterruptingChicken1 − Wow. Those were some trashy guests. I’m so glad

the bride kicked them out. Twenty something years ago, my florist made

these gorgeous topiaries as center pieces. She said because they were

reusable and because of the labor to make them, she had to charge $100

apiece extra if they weren’t returned. Otherwise they all disappeared.

I had to make 2 or 3 little cards per table saying not to take the

centerpieces. Thankfully, nobody did.

Last_Ad4258 − I have never taken a centerpiece unless it was given to me,

whether the dot under the pate thing or the host offered when we said

goodbye. You don’t know the situation, sometimes the florists wants parts of it back

These commenters explained that taking centerpieces can be acceptable in some cultures, but only after the event ends and with permission

Gloomy_Researcher769 − When I was younger an went to weddings it was

tradition to put a penny under one chair at each table and that person (if

they wanted it) could bring home the center piece from the table AFTER

the wedding reception was over.

blukwolf − Lol it actually is a bad Spanish habit to "reserve" the center

pieces but usually one waits until the event is finished to take whatever

center piece they want/is left and take it back with them but never in my

life I've ever seen people destroying the tables prior to the event just to

get it, like at least in my life you'll be heavily criticized and told off for doing that

Traditional-Show9321 − It is normal in Hispanic communities to take the

center piece and in general I think it’s a good thing bc pretty center pieces

don’t go to waste (my mom has one such piece on her coffee table),

HOWEVER I always understood the etiquette to be you wait until after

dinner or when the lights get turned off for dancing.

In other words you wait until you’re sure no more pictures are being taken

of the table decor or the room’s decor in general.

QueenCole − We made sure to announce that our centerpieces were

rentals but the flowers in them our guests were welcome to AFTER the party.

These commenters condemned the guests’ behavior as entitled, rude, and disrespectful

I_wet_my_plants − This sounds absolutely unhinged, that poor bride wtf.

Lisa_Knows_Best − Because sadly, this world is full of entitled scum that

have no manners and it's only getting worse.

A wedding planner’s job is already demanding, but it becomes even harder when guests ignore the effort behind the scenes.

OP spent hours creating beautiful centerpieces within a limited budget, only to return from a quick bathroom break and find guests had dismantled the entire room.

While some traditions may involve taking decorations home, timing and communication matter.

The bride understood the situation and ultimately defended the person who worked hard to make her wedding special.

Do you think the guests were simply following a tradition, or did they cross a major line by taking the decorations before the event even started? Share your thoughts below!
