Wife Protects Her Infant After Husband Comes Home Unable to Stand, Sparking a Marriage Crisis

Becoming a parent often changes the way people view responsibility, safety, and trust.

Things that may have been tolerated before can suddenly feel completely unacceptable when a child’s wellbeing is involved.

A young mother found herself facing a difficult situation after her husband came home heavily intoxicated during what was supposed to be a family birthday celebration.

She was already frustrated after feeling pushed aside and left to handle their baby alone yet again.

However, the situation became much more serious when he entered their baby’s room while he was clearly unable to care for himself.

She immediately stepped in and removed their child from the situation, but her husband felt hurt by her reaction.

Now, she is questioning whether she was protecting her baby or overreacting in the moment.

Scroll down to see why readers had strong opinions about this family conflict.

'AITA for telling my husband he’s not allowed in my daughter’s nursery?'

So my (F22) husband (M24) came home absolutely shitfaced tonight.

Yesterday was his birthday, which we celebrated as a family and then today

we were all supposed to go out with friends to celebrate as well. He kept

changing the plans and we ended up at a bar where my 6 month old baby is

not allowed. I left him there and he was supposed to only have a few drinks and then come home.

Now I was already upset when I left because I had not agreed to just be

pushed aside and sent home with the baby. It would have been different if

this was the plan and I knew I would be taking care of her for yet another

night on my own. (I take care of her almost every night by myself with no

help. I also take care of her all day while being a full time student and I’m

starting at a full time job soon.)

He was there for hours and then when he finally decided to come back he

woke everyone up in the house and was throwing up in our kitchen sink. He

stayed in the kitchen for over and hour before going into the bathroom

and he was there for over an hour as well.

I finally got him out of the bathroom so I could use it and I looked down

and he had thrown up in the bathtub as well and couldn’t be bothered to

rinse it. I was in there for maybe 2 minutes total when I heard the door to

the nursery open. Here’s where I don’t know if I was the a__hole or if I was

correct in protecting my baby.

This man couldn’t stand on his own. It took him 2 minutes to figure out how

to work the doorknob after he left the bathroom. When I ran into the

nursery he had managed to get the baby out of her crib and was sitting in

the rocking chair with her. I immediately started trying to take her from

him while he was fighting me on it and I told him to get the hell out. He

gave me a hurt look and tried to argue so I told him he didn’t have the right

to have access to her when he was like that and he wasn’t allowed in there

again tonight. He’s now ignoring me and sleeping on the couch and I have

me and my baby locked in my bedroom so I know nothing will happen to

her. So AITA for taking my daughter away from him and kicking him out of

her room?

Edit: A lot of people are asking if he does this a lot. He used to drink like

this all the time and he majorly cut back after way too many arguments

about my personal safety. He wasn’t abusing me or anything but he would

get loud, aggressive, and mean. This was before our baby and I honestly

thought he had it under control until a couple months ago when he started

drinking more frequently again.

He works weird hours so I get maybe 2-3 hours with him when he comes

home from work before he goes to bed and weekends it’s pretty much my

same routine as weekdays but with a little help. I’m still the primary

caregiver on the weekends even with him home though.

Update: As a lot of people have had problems with it, I thought he had it

completely under control when we decided to have a kid. It had been a

year of him not acting this way when we decided to have a baby. He didn’t

pick back up again until after I got pregnant and even then we had multiple

conversations and this was the first instance in about 10 months that he

had gotten back to this point. I also was not aware of this problem before

marrying him. We didn’t live together before marriage, so he was able to

easily hide what he didn’t want me to see. I would also like to clarify

because somehow there’s been some misunderstanding, but I have never

kept him from her when he is sober. He’s had plenty of time to bond with

her and be around her in the past 6 months when he is home. That being

said, he is checking himself into inpatient care tomorrow morning and my

family has agreed to help me move back home if this happens again.

Unfortunately I live 1500 miles away from my family, so options are limited

at the moment but everyone is willing to pool together money if I need it. I

am safe. He knows where I stand on this and this is the first time he’s taken

this much accountability, but it did take me leaving the house for a couple

hours this morning for him to realize how serious this problem was. I will be

saving all the money from my job once I start, outside of what is needed for

groceries, and building an exit plan in a separate bank account.

Protecting a child sometimes means making decisions that hurt someone’s feelings in the moment. Parenting requires looking beyond a person’s intentions and focusing on whether they are physically and emotionally capable of providing safe care at that exact time.

The OP’s conflict was not really about her husband wanting time with their baby. It was about the difference between being a loving parent and being in a condition where parenting is unsafe. She understood that her husband wanted to hold their daughter, but he was so intoxicated that he could not stand properly, struggled with basic tasks, and was not able to control his own body. Her reaction came from seeing a vulnerable infant being placed in the care of someone who was impaired. At the same time, the emotional pain likely came from a larger pattern: feeling alone in parenting responsibilities while watching her husband choose alcohol during one of the few times they were supposed to spend together as a family.

A different perspective is that her husband may not have intended harm. Many people who struggle with alcohol do not see themselves as a danger, especially when they still feel emotionally connected to their children. He may have believed that holding his daughter was a loving gesture rather than recognizing how impaired he was. However, good intentions do not replace the ability to provide safe supervision. A parent can love their child deeply and still be unable to care for them safely while intoxicated.

This explains why removing the baby from his arms was not a punishment. It was a safety decision. The OP was not saying her husband had no right to bond with his child. She was saying that bonding must happen when he is sober and able to be present. A parent’s access to their child comes with responsibility, especially when alcohol affects their ability to function.

The larger concern is not one bad night alone. The OP’s updates suggest a previous pattern of heavy drinking, arguments about safety, and increasing alcohol use after the birth of their child. His decision to seek treatment is an important step, but lasting change will depend on consistent actions rather than promises made after a crisis.

The OP’s response shows a difficult reality of parenting: sometimes protecting a child means setting boundaries with the person you love most. A healthy family is not built by ignoring problems to avoid conflict. It is built when everyone takes responsibility for creating a safe environment.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters agreed a drunk person should not handle a baby due to safety risks

LoubyAnnoyed − If you’re too drunk to clean up your own vomit, you are

far too drunk to be holding a baby. NTA.

Separate_Name9760 − NTA when he's sober, yall need to talk. He was not

in control of his own body, and while babies are pretty durable, they also

aren't, and it's better to hurt your drunk husbands feelings than risk

physical injury to your child.

Not_Good_HappyQuinn − NTA, please ask him how he would have felt if

he’d passed out drunk holding the baby and the baby had fallen onto the

floor/suffocated/been harmed in any way. Because that’s the reality. He

was not in control of himself in any way shape or form. Would he allow

anyone else that drink to hold his child? If so he’s a terrible parent.

These Redditors criticized the partner’s priorities and questioned his commitment as a father

Due_Row537 − NTA for protecting your kid.   However, you said you take

care of your kid all the time and you get no help from him whatsoever.

What is he contributing to the relationship then?   He wanted a night out to

celebrate his bday and he knew where to go so you and the kid wouldn’t be

allowed in. He did that in purpose.

He could have chosen any other place where you both could celebrate but

he chose not to. That speaks volumes.   What is your relationship like,

anyway? Because what I’m getting from your post is that you got knocked

up by a man child, who values his mates and alcohol more than you and the

kid he spent 2 min making!

He’s not helping you at home, not helping you take care of your kid! What is

he doing?   You need to have a serious conversation with him and explain to

him where he failed as a partner and father. If he doesn’t take

accountability for his s__tty actions then you have an answer right there.

If he starts to gaslight you, blame you, shout and throw a fit and you

forgive him - then you are TAH for staying with him.  Do you want your kid

to grow up in a toxic environment? Do you want to be a pushover and a

doormat? Do you want to spend the rest of your life being in a relationship

with this guy?

luckygirl131313 − My exhusband came to the hospital drunk after having

both my children, I had him removed, unfortunately took me a long time to

leave him, in hindsight so much of my life wasted, this is a big deal, NTA

FinancialCamel7281 − NTA you know you are not the ah for protecting your

baby, if this is true, you need to separate for a while. His ideas and yours

are vastly different, he is still being a "bro" not a partner, or spouse material

These users shared experiences with unhealthy relationships and urged OP to demand change

This_lady_in_paso − Im so sorry you are experiencing this.   The first few

years of my child's life had a lot of nights like these with my husband.   We

nearly divorced.   He stopped drinking.   If he hadn't, he would no longer be

living with us.   Make him clean up his own messes and pull his weight as a

father or move on

Remarkable-One6368 − I had a husband like that a while ago. You guys

need to calmly talk about this. I ended up raising two kids alone. It was

really hard but so much better than dealing with a useless member of the

household. Good luck and enjoy that baby! Edit for judgement. NTA

Competitive-Watch188 − oh sweetheart, I'm sorry this happened but you

cant stay with someone that puts your baby at risk like this. ... You are NTA

but you cant let this slide.

These commenters supported OP’s actions and said protecting the child was the right choice

MushroomTypical9549 − He needs help and you are an incredible mom

who did nothing wrong. NTA

Shldmadn81 − NTA! The number of ways an accident could happen that

would result in her being injured is way to high to ignore to worry about his

drunk feelings! Your priority has to be her safety, so you made the right

call. Let him sleep it off on the couch and reconsider his actions in the morning!

Sea_Roof3637 − NTA - he was unstable, it’s not a judgement of his sober

character but in that moment he was sick and holding a baby in a rocking

chair that’s a recipe for disaster. Talk to him sober and explain things.

The situation highlights the difference between being a loving parent and protecting a child’s safety.

The OP wasn’t trying to punish her husband or keep him away from their baby permanently; she reacted to a moment when he was severely intoxicated and unable to care for himself, let alone a six-month-old.

Do you think the OP was too harsh in taking the baby away, or was that a necessary boundary in that moment?

Can someone rebuild trust after a relapse in drinking, and what steps should they take to prove they are ready for responsibility again? Share your thoughts below!
