Woman Adopts Kitten, Then Previous Owner Demands It Back Days Later

Adopting a pet is often an emotional decision because people quickly form attachments, but rehoming situations can become complicated when the original owner changes their mind. The line between caring for an animal and respecting an agreement can become unclear when feelings get involved.

The original poster (OP) shared how she adopted a kitten that was advertised as “free to a good home” after losing her beloved black cat. Within days, the kitten began adjusting to OP’s home and bonding with her other pets.

However, the previous owner suddenly demanded the kitten back, saying she missed her and could no longer care for the animals due to personal circumstances.

As the requests became more intense, including contacting OP’s mother, OP began questioning whether keeping the kitten was wrong or whether she was protecting an animal that already had a new home. Scroll down to see how Reddit responded to this kitten rehoming conflict.

'WIBTA if I don’t return the “free to good home” kitten?'

Short backstory: I used to have a beautiful Bombay kitty and I miss him dearly.

He was my soul cat. I know he can’t be replaced but I’ve really missed just having a black cat around.

A few days ago I found out about some kittens that were free to a good home.

I went to meet this little black kitten (about 12 weeks) and ended up bringing her home with me.

The lady rehoming her supplied me with food, a litter box (which I didn’t need, but ok) and let me use a carrier.

My Bombay had passed away in mine on the way to the vet, so I had thrown it out.

I bought a sizable crate on the way home to keep her quarantined until she gets her shots (in less than a week).

She has, however, absolutely already started bonding to my other cat and our small dog through the crate.

I take her out to pet her and form a bond with her, but primarily she stays safely guarded until her upcoming vet visit.

I spoke with the lady earlier today. She wants me to return the kitten. She says the mama cat is too sad without her.

These kittens are fully weaned, and mama cat is feral. From what I understood, they live trapped mama and brought her inside.

She does NOT like people at all. She wants the carrier back (no problem), the food, and the kitten herself. I can apparently “keep the litterbox”

She has blown up my phone for two days (I was at work when she was calling yesterday,

then running music from my phone for a performance today so my notifications have been off)

and since she couldn’t reach me, she looked up my mother in the phone book and called her more than once at home.

She wanted the kitten driven back to her (which is about a 30-40 minute drive one way from my home) and even though it’s the weekend

and I told her I have things to do as I work full time and teach through the week, she wanted her brought back before dark. (The kitten is not...

She told me the black kitten was her favorite and she hated to see her go.

She also told me she needs surgery so she has to because she won’t be able to care for them.

WIBTH if I keep the kitten, but return the other things and go on with my life?

UPDATE: thank you everyone! She called my mother AGAIN.

I called her back on a recorded line and politely but sternly told her I would not be returning the kitten as she has bonded to my other pets already.

When I told her, she began listing extra excuses for wanting the kitten back, and tried to invoke the name of Jesus twice.

I told her not to call my mother anymore and that I wished her the best of luck. THEN I figured out how to block her number for my mother.

She won’t get through again, and the kitten is staying here, safe with our family.

For those who mentioned that mama cat is probably upset because she’s feral and trapped inside, I brought that up.

“No, I’ve had her inside since June so she’s completely adjusted.” I can confirm that mama cat was not adjusted. She looked miserable when I saw her..

UPDATE #2: SHE GAVE OUT MY NUMBER!

I received a text from her friend last night who had made the post on Facebook for her. He was very polite and obviously didn’t have the whole story.

He messaged me asking me to reach out to her so that we could set up a vet appointment.

He had no clue she wanted the kitten back and that I have gone no contact with her.

He apologized. The conversation with him was very civil and he seems like a good person.

I’m not ok with her giving out my number, and I’m not ok with the lies she apparently told him, but aside from that I didn’t mind talking to him.

It was brief, but I didn’t get the feeling he will continue to harass me in her stead.

Bringing an animal into a home is rarely just a simple transaction. Pets quickly become part of a family, and the emotional connection can form much faster than people expect. That is why disagreements about rehoming animals can become deeply personal, even when everyone believes they are acting out of love.

In this story, the OP did not take the kitten casually. She had lost a beloved cat and was looking for companionship again, but she also prepared carefully by arranging quarantine, planning veterinary care, and slowly introducing the kitten to her existing pets.

The conflict began when the previous owner changed her mind after the kitten had already started transitioning into a new home. From OP’s perspective, the issue was not just giving up a kitten; it was being asked to reverse a decision after creating a safe environment and beginning the bonding process.

A different perspective is that the previous owner may have been experiencing genuine regret. Giving away an animal, especially one she was attached to, could have caused emotional distress. Her statement that the kitten was her favorite suggests she may have underestimated how difficult the separation would feel.

However, once someone chooses to rehome an animal, they also have to consider the stability of the new home. A pet is not an object that can simply be reclaimed whenever emotions change. The kitten’s needs and adjustment become part of the decision.

Animal welfare experts often emphasize that successful pet adoption depends on stability, preparation, and responsible transitions.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals explains that rehoming decisions should prioritize the animal’s long-term welfare and that transitions should be handled carefully to reduce stress for pets and people involved.

This perspective highlights why the OP’s concerns were reasonable. The kitten had already entered a new environment, begun forming relationships with other animals, and was receiving planned veterinary care. Returning her immediately could create another stressful change, especially for a young animal still adjusting.

The communication pattern also became an important part of the situation. The previous owner contacting OP’s mother repeatedly and later sharing OP’s phone number crossed a boundary.

Feeling sadness over losing a pet is understandable, but attempting to pressure someone through family members or outside contacts turns a difficult conversation into a conflict.

The situation also shows why clear agreements matter when rehoming animals. People should discuss whether the decision is permanent, what happens if circumstances change, and what information the new owner needs before accepting responsibility.

Ultimately, OP’s decision was not only about keeping a kitten. It was about honoring a commitment already made to an animal who now depended on her. Compassion should extend to the person who misses the pet, but it must also include the pet who needs a stable and loving home.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters agreed the cat should stay with the new owner after being given away

AllPerspicacity − NTA keep that cat, someone offered her money for it.

Present_Original_797 − NTA. It's yours, not hers. I suspect someone had wanted one and is now offering her money. Block her.

worshippirates − NTA keep the kitten and block the woman, but bring the cat to the vet asap to get shots and microchipped.

Like today. Like now. Cats are property. Whoever has vet records and microchip info for this cat owns the kitty.

Stock-Cell1556 − NTA. People have to understand that you can't give away an animal and then expect to just take it back; people get attached.

I'd drop the carrier and the food off at her house because you don't want her coming to yours.

Just leave it out front and let her know it's there. Then enjoy your kitten!

These Redditors suggested returning the supplies while avoiding further contact with the previous owner

Deciduous-Jellyfish − NTA. The fetal mama cat is probably upset because she’s trapped inside.

I say return her equipment (just leave it on the porch with a thank you post-it; no need to knock/talk), block her number, and have your mom do the same.

silveroakediting22 − Yeah drop the food and carrier off anonymously and never contact her again.

NTA but you would be if you return a kitten that has already started bonding with you

TacoDoc2 − No is a complete sentence. Kindly inform her that you will return anything you agreed to before hand.

But you're keeping the cat. There is no way she's in tune with mama cat so much she can tell the cat is sad about that specific one.

Then block her and move on with life. To go so far as to call your mom. F__king insane. Use caution.

These users believed the kitten was safer indoors and criticized returning cats to outdoor conditions

Left-coastal − NTA. I doubt mama cat is sad, they’re often desperate for their babies to grow up and not need them.

Besides the kitten is safer inside with you than outside.

happybear78 − NTA. she’s just going to perpetuate the cycle of outdoor feral cats.

This commenter thanked the community and confirmed the kitten would remain with her

saphmalkazoid − Everyone… THANK YOU. I truly felt I should keep her. I can’t see myself uprooting this tiny creature twice, let alone twice in one week.

She absolutely stays with me and I feel better knowing I’m not the a__hole here. I don’t plan to block the lady just yet.

If she keeps calling, it’s just more evidence I’ll have in case I need it.

She called my mom on a landline so I’ll have to see if her phone has an option to block her there.

I can handle it for a bit for evidence sake, but my mom shouldn’t have to deal with it at all. Never should have had to in the first place,...

Do you think the former owner deserved another chance to take the kitten back, or should rehoming decisions be permanent once an animal settles into a new home? Share your thoughts below!
