Woman Assumed Customer Was Ignoring Her, Until Sign Language Changed Everything

People often make quick assumptions when someone communicates differently. A few extra seconds of patience can prevent an awkward situation, but not everyone is willing to slow down long enough to understand what is happening.

One customer stopped at a local diner to collect a food order and tried to show the details on their phone. Instead of taking a moment to read the screen, the woman behind the counter became impatient and repeatedly demanded a spoken answer.

The customer attempted to make the information easier to see, but the employee only grew more frustrated. Then, one simple response completely changed the atmosphere at the register. Scroll down to see why the woman’s expression became the most memorable part of the encounter.

'Karen tries to force a mute to talk! 😂'

I had to pick up some food for someone at a local Diner, when an older (50-60ish F) came up to the register with a cranky look on their face.

I just assumed they had RBF, and tried showing them my phone. (Order info written on screen)

This lady immediately goes into bit** mode, "I don't have my glasses, just read it to me!"

My phone was in my hand and my purse and wallet in my other, for context.

I set my purse down and enable the zoom feature (I am used to older people "not seeing")

She then starts raising her voice, "what are you doing!? Just tell me who you're here for! I don't have my glasses.

If you can't tell me, who the order is for you aren't getting it"!

Frustrated, I threw my phone on the table and began signing to her in ASL.

"I can't talk you dum b****, Just give me 5 seconds and I'll make it bigger for you!"

The look on her face was, PRICELESS! Her entire world began to fall apart in seconds.

Jaw dropped and eyes wide she just handed me the only bag that was on the counter, handed me the receipt to sign.

Then just stood there too shocked to do anything!. It was, AWESOME! 😂😂😂

Misunderstandings happen every day, but the way people respond to confusion often reveals far more than the confusion itself. Most of us have experienced moments when someone assumed we were being difficult without stopping to consider that there might be an explanation they could not immediately see.

In this situation, the OP was not refusing to answer a simple question. They were navigating the world with a communication disability while encountering someone who mistook silence for defiance.

The emotional conflict began long before the exchange escalated. The OP had already developed a practical system for communicating by showing the order information on a phone, a strategy that likely works in countless interactions. Instead of pausing to understand why the phone was being used, the employee quickly interpreted the delay as uncooperative behavior.

Once frustration took over, every action the OP made was viewed through that assumption. The OP, meanwhile, found themselves trying to solve two problems at once: completing a routine pickup while also managing another person’s growing anger.

What could have been a ten-second interaction became an emotionally draining confrontation because patience disappeared before understanding had a chance to develop.

A different perspective is that this story is not really about one rude employee. It highlights how strongly people rely on expectations during everyday conversations.

Many assume that everyone can communicate verbally unless told otherwise. When someone does not respond as expected, the brain often fills the gap with the least generous explanation, such as rudeness, incompetence, or dishonesty.

The employee likely believed she was dealing with an uncooperative customer, while the OP was simply trying to adapt the conversation in the only way available to them.

Psychologist Daniel Kahneman described how people frequently rely on rapid, automatic judgments before engaging in slower, more deliberate thinking.

These quick conclusions help us make everyday decisions efficiently, but they also increase the likelihood of misunderstanding other people’s intentions when important information is missing. His work demonstrates why first impressions, especially under stress, are not always reliable guides to reality.

That insight helps explain why the employee’s reaction unraveled so quickly once the OP began signing. The new information instantly challenged the story she had already created in her mind. Instead of dealing with a difficult customer, she realized she had been speaking harshly to someone who physically could not respond the way she expected.

While the OP understandably found satisfaction in that moment of realization, the deeper lesson extends beyond one embarrassing interaction. Invisible disabilities often remain invisible until someone takes the time to ask, observe, or simply wait a few extra seconds.

Ultimately, respect begins with curiosity rather than assumption. Most communication barriers can be overcome when people approach each other with patience instead of frustration.

A brief pause to understand someone’s situation often prevents unnecessary conflict and reminds us that not every silence is a choice. Sometimes it is simply another way of communicating.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors stressed patience and warned against assuming someone is rude

ProfessionUnhappy733 − And *that's* why one should be polite and patient instead of assuming.

AppropriateRip9996 − I hope her supervisor was behind her. I was at the Walmart and I asked a stocker for help.

The person signed to get someone else and they couldn't help me. I don't know sign language but I had a written list.

I put one finger up and pulled out my list. I pointed to the item I needed. They helped me find it.

It was completely a functional interaction and I was the one who felt awkward for not knowing how to sign. I've had only basic classes.

My partner has neurological issues that affect communication. Text or email work great.

Talking to her from behind her back or changing topics suddenly is bad. She tells people in interviews how she communicates best.

Sadly many employers do not hire her for jobs she can do. The best thing is that over time people get to know her and she has a good social...

I never want to move because these deeper relationships take time.

These users shared practical ways to communicate respectfully with deaf customers

CampfiresInConifers − She *should* be embarrassed! I'm upset on your behalf! I worked at Walmart for two years & it was a rare day when

I didn't have an interaction with a customer who needed to communicate a little differently.

That's why I always carried a pen & paper, & I had a text & voice translation app on my phone.

On an entirely different note, I have had nearly zero use for all the French I learned in school lol.

Lots of Spanish, Hmong, & various Chinese assorted languages users around me,

a few ASL users, & one Russian lady who used to seek me out bc she thought I spoke Russian (? ?? I was using the app! ).

BebeCakesMama2424 − I love this 😭😭🤣🤣🤌🏻🤌🏻 my sisters and I know ASL due to our deaf grandparents

and it’s been an amazing way to communicate especially when we’ve been at work and notice a customer who is deaf.

They light up like Christmas when we begin to sign and speak to them in their language.

Accomplished_Yam590 − When are these f__king fossils going to realize that disabled and neurodivergent folx are everywhere,

and we're (mostly) no longer being shoved into institutions or medically tortured, but instead permitted to try to lead full, actual lives?

The goldfish gape they do when real life comes at them faster than their brain can catch up is priceless.

These commenters said embarrassment is understandable, but refusing to apologize is not

jensmith20055002 − Here’s what I really don’t understand. I’ve had bad days. I’ve been a b__ch.

I’ve done stupid ass s__t like the RBF, but ffs apologize. “So sorry OP. I’m having a s__tty day. I forgot my readers. ”

“I guess I’m the a__hole OP. I’m sorry. ” Why do people double down? Who can’t relate to a bad day? Bad boss? bad fight with husband?

smittens95 − Omg, when I was 19, I worked at Target.

I tried telling a couple they could come to our new self checkout, and they ignored me, didn't even look my way.

I thought they were another entitled rude couple. You got a lot of them at Target.

Well, they came to self checkout and tried to ask for help, I learned they were deaf.

The first time I ever met someone deaf, I felt so much guilt. Never assume again, but I learned from that embarrassment.

These users enjoyed the rude customer’s embarrassment and joked about signing back

Indeed_Proceed − I wish I could have witnessed that. Good for you 👍

monstera_furiosa − Okay, now I need to look up how to sign ‘dumb b__ch’. For reasons.

mwohlg − I hope you signed her one final universal gesture on your way out

Have you ever mistaken someone’s behavior for rudeness before discovering there was a completely different explanation? Should businesses provide more accessibility training for front-line employees, or is simple patience the most important skill of all? Share your thoughts below.
