Woman Changes Her Hair Color After Friend Copies Her Signature Look, Then Gets Blamed

Changing your appearance is usually a personal choice, but sometimes people attach emotional meaning to shared experiences without clearly communicating it. A simple misunderstanding can become a conflict when one person expects something that the other person never agreed to.

The original poster (OP) shared how she helped her friend dye her hair for the first time after the friend chose the same vibrant red shade OP had been wearing for years. OP was excited to support her friend, but later decided to try something different and dyed her own hair black while her friend slept over.

What OP saw as a fun personal change turned into an unexpected argument when her friend revealed she had hoped they would have matching hair.

Now, OP is wondering if she accidentally ruined a special moment or if her friend’s expectations went too far. Scroll down to see what Reddit thought about this hair color disagreement.

'AITAH for dying my hair a new color?'

I (F22) have been dying my hair the same color for about 3 years now.

For some context, when I moved out for college I started experimenting with my hair and fell in love with dyeing it a vibrant red.

Recently, my friend (F21) has been working up the courage to dye her hair. She has been asking me questions about hair dye for weeks.

Three days ago, she told me she was ready to color her hair for the first time,

so she called me while at Sally Beauty and asked me questions about what products to get.

She ended up picking out the same red color that I normally dye my hair. I was very excited for her and highly recommended the hair dye brand.

A few hours after the call I felt inspired to change my hair too, so I went and picked up some black hair dye to try something new.

Last night, my friend drove over to my house (It’s an hour drive) and I dyed her hair red in my bathroom.

We laughed, watched youtube and had a fun time as we waited for the bleach and dye to work.

It took a couple hours to dye her hair, but she said that she was happy with the result and we took some pics of our red hair.

Since it had gotten pretty late, my friend said she was tired and went to sleep on the couch in my living room.

I wasn’t very tired, so I stayed up and dyed my hair black.

This morning, my friend was surprised that I dyed my hair.

I thought she was just surprised to see me with a different hair color, since I have had red hair for a while now,

but my friend wouldn’t really talk to me and left my place earlier than expected.

I was worried about her, so I texted her to see if she was feeling ok. She texted back that she didn’t know I was going to dye my hair...

She told me she was really upset because we were supposed to have matching hair

(I knew she picked out the same dye I normally use, but I didn’t realize the goal was to have matching hair with me).

She also called me an AH because she has bright red hair and I now have a more natural hair color.

I probably should’ve told her that I picked up some black hair dye after our call.

I just didn't know how long it was going to take to dye her hair and if I would have enough time to mine on the same night.

I thought it would be fun that we both had new hair colors. I haven’t responded to her text yet because I don’t know what to say. AITAH?

Small moments between friends can carry different meanings for each person. One person may see something as a fun coincidence, while another may quietly attach emotional importance to it.

Many conflicts happen not because someone intended to hurt another person, but because two people were imagining completely different versions of the same experience.

In this story, the OP believed she was supporting her friend’s first experience with hair dye. She spent time answering questions, helped her choose a color, dyed her hair, and celebrated the result with her. From OP’s perspective, the red hair belonged to both of them only in the sense that it was a shared interest and a fun moment.

When she later changed her own hair, she saw it as a personal experiment after years of having the same style. Her friend, however, appears to have viewed the red hair as a symbolic connection between them. The disappointment came from an expectation that was never clearly communicated.

A different perspective is that the friend’s feelings may come from vulnerability rather than simple entitlement. Trying a dramatic hair color for the first time can feel like a major personal step, especially when someone lacks confidence.

Having a friend share the experience may have made it feel safer and more exciting. However, the problem is that the friend turned an unspoken hope into an obligation. OP could not reasonably know that matching hair was a requirement when that was never said.

Psychologists who study relationships often emphasize that many interpersonal conflicts come from assumptions rather than direct communication.

According to psychologist Harriet Lerner, healthy relationships require people to communicate their needs clearly instead of expecting others to automatically understand unspoken expectations. She explains that expressing feelings and desires directly helps prevent resentment from building when others cannot read our minds.

That insight fits this situation well. The friend was allowed to feel disappointed, but OP was not responsible for fulfilling a plan she was never told about.

Changing her own appearance after helping someone else explore theirs does not take away from the friend’s experience. Both things can exist at the same time: the friend can enjoy her red hair, and OP can choose a different style.

The healthiest response would likely be a conversation rather than an argument. OP could acknowledge that she understands why matching hair felt meaningful, while also explaining that she never agreed to keep the same color. The friend, in turn, may need to recognize that friendship does not require identical choices.

The larger lesson is that closeness does not mean losing individuality. Good friends can share experiences without needing to remain copies of each other. Sometimes the strongest friendships are the ones where two people can celebrate their differences just as much as their similarities.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors agreed OP was not responsible for understanding an unspoken matching plan

Dapper_Weight3919 − NTA. Bruh thats so concerning. If you want to match on purpose you communicate.

Idk how you could possibly be TA when the other person didn’t lay out their intentions.

Bearliz − NTA. You're not a mind reader.

AssociateGood9653 − If she wanted to match, she should’ve told you in advance.

You can’t know her intention, and you might not have wanted to match anyways.

These commenters suggested the friend may have felt rejected but still believed OP did nothing wrong

PsychMonkey7 − NTA. It might feel to her like you didn’t want to match her and she’s taking that as r__ection, but she sounds very over the top.

I would just explain you were inspired to make a change and it has nothing to do with her.

late-nineteenth − NTA for wanting to change your hair color. Also NTA if YOU don't want matching hair color with your friend.

These users compared the situation to unsettling “copying” behavior and found the friend’s reaction concerning

Kittyboukus − You aren't old enough to know the movie "Single White Female. " But you should look it up. This sounds like that.

BubbleCrum − NtA. She had a plan she didnt include you in and then got mad that you didnt follow said unsaid plan? !

Single White Female vibes. Edit- hurr durr "a female what? "

Idk if you deleted your comment or blocked me so I couldn't respond, but youre dumb as f__k u/thecrowjester

AZDarkknight − NTA - Its kind of creepy to me that someone wants matching hair to me, ngl. Ive seen those stories in movies before and it never ends well....

This group felt communication was the real issue because the friend never clearly expressed her intentions

Pale_Pen_5971 − I’m so confused on how this would make you an AH. Def NTA.

mystery_obsessed − NTA. If anything, I’d be annoyed my friend was trying to match me.

Do you think the friend’s disappointment was understandable, or did she cross a line by expecting someone else to match her without asking? Would you enjoy matching styles with a friend, or would you prefer keeping your own look? Share your thoughts below!
