Siblings often get under each other’s skin, and sometimes a simple joke can blow up into something bigger than expected. This original poster (OP) and her sister have always had a bit of a strained relationship, but they’ve gotten by.

One day, while OP was looking out the window, she saw her sister posing for what looked like an odd self-timer photo shoot in the garage. Seizing the opportunity for a laugh, OP filmed the scene and posted it to her private Snapchat story.

What she thought was a harmless joke quickly backfired when her sister discovered the video and blew up at her. Now, OP is torn, wondering if her playful post was really worth the fallout. Was OP in the wrong, or did her sister overreact to a funny situation?

Keep reading to see how this awkward sibling moment unfolded!

Sister posts a video of her sibling taking self-timer photos, sparking drama

'AITA for making fun of my sister for taking bikini pictures for a modeling submission?'

Hello!

My sister (22F) moved back home with me and my parents for the time being.

We don't always get along super well and she can be super high maintenance

and easy irritated, but we have an ok relationship and joke around sometimes.

She tends to yell at me for really random stuff so I just try to stay out of her way.

This morning I looked outside the window and saw her in our garage wearing a bikini

and leaning her phone against random stuff to take self-timer photos.

She was standing creepily still and not smiling in the photos.

I ended up taking a vid of her because she looked so funny doing it.

When she came inside I asked her what she was doing

and she got kind of defensive and then was like "it's just for a modeling submission thing."

She has never expressed any interest in modeling so I found this kind of strange.

I ended up posting the video of her on my snapchat with the caption

"When your sister thinks she is a model lol."

I don't have many friends on snapchat

so I didn't think it was a big deal, just a funny thing to post.

I completely forgot that she has me as a friend on snapchat, so later in the day,

she saw it and started screaming at me like

"WHY WOULD YOU POST THAT!!! WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO EMBARRASS ME!!!"

I took it down to get her to calm down,

but I still don't think what I did was a big deal.

She was embarrassing herself in broad daylight,

and I was just joking by filming her. AITA?

Edit: I can accept that I was an a__hole in this situation

but I think a lot of you are blowing this way out of proportion.

I didn't upload the video "to the internet", just my PRIVATE snapchat story.

It was only up for \~3 hours and seen by less than 10 people.

It was taken from far away through a window so you can't see her body

or anything that she hasn't already posted on instagram.

My friends constantly post embarrassing videos of themselves or others

and it's a lighthearted thing. Also, to all of you saying I'm creepy

for this or making i__est/pornhub references;

please get your mind out of the g__ter,

I am a female and that is disgusting.

You are creepy for projecting your own ideas and fantasies onto this conflict.

In this situation, OP’s actions stemmed from a place of humor and a desire to share something lighthearted with a small group of people.

However, this scenario highlights how easily something that seems harmless to one person can deeply hurt or embarrass another, especially in a sibling dynamic.

While OP did not think their actions were a big deal, their sister clearly felt differently and expressed it in a way that shows the emotional weight the situation carried for her.

From OP’s perspective, it might have seemed like a small, harmless joke, a funny, lighthearted moment captured on video and shared with a small, private audience.

The humor was driven by the idea that her sister was acting in a quirky, exaggerated manner, and OP likely thought the post was just in good fun.

This might have been an attempt to poke fun without malicious intent, particularly since OP is accustomed to lighthearted moments between them.

However, it’s essential to consider how her sister saw the situation. Her response was one of intense discomfort and distress. It’s clear that she felt exposed and vulnerable in a way that OP hadn’t considered.

Even though it was shared with a limited audience, the idea of being filmed without her consent in a private moment, and then having that moment broadcasted in a public forum, even one with only a few viewers, likely felt like a violation of her privacy.

Her anger, especially since she had a defensive reaction, suggests that she felt humiliated by OP’s actions.

Psychologically, this dynamic also speaks to the complex relationship siblings often have with one another, particularly when boundaries are not explicitly discussed or respected.

While OP may not have had ill intentions, the nature of humor in a sibling relationship can sometimes blur the line between teasing and hurtful behavior.

Humor often depends on mutual understanding, if one person doesn’t find the joke funny, then what was meant as lighthearted teasing can instead feel like an attack or betrayal.

Additionally, there’s an important discussion about consent, especially in the digital age.

While OP may not have thought it would be a big deal, posting anything about someone without their permission, even something seemingly trivial like a funny video, can be problematic.

Consent to share anything, even in a private space like Snapchat, is crucial, particularly when it involves sensitive moments that someone might not want to be publicly discussed or documented.

From an expert’s perspective, Dr. Laura Markham, a clinical psychologist and parenting expert, discusses how “respecting boundaries and showing empathy in our interactions with others is essential to maintaining trust and healthy relationships.”

In this case, OP’s sister’s strong emotional reaction highlights that OP may have crossed an unspoken boundary, even if unintentionally. Acknowledging and respecting emotional boundaries, especially within families, is key to fostering trust.

In conclusion, while OP did not act with malicious intent, they failed to fully respect their sister’s privacy and emotional boundaries.

Moving forward, it would be helpful for OP to apologize, not just for posting the video, but for not considering how their sister might feel about it.

This situation offers a valuable lesson in the importance of consent and empathy, even within the context of family humor and lighthearted moments.

Respecting one another’s boundaries in both physical and digital spaces will strengthen their relationship and prevent future misunderstandings.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

This group focused on the consent and privacy violation

LiterallyJustMia − YTA man, I can't imagine if someone did this to me.

1) You embarrassed doing something that she probably felt nervous about already

2) Your caption was straight up laughing at the idea that she could be a model,

and you think that's not hurtful?

3) You showed footage of her in a bikini without her conset, to a load of strangers.

PhoenixRisingToday − YTA Who films their sister in a bikini without her knowledge? Gross.

Top tip bud: it is never, EVER OK to film someone without their knowledge or consent

and post it online.

Doing it to make fun of someone makes you an epic, unmitigated, gaping a__hole.

These Redditors labeled your behavior as bullying

444sh − YTA and a creep

spicyoodles − YTA. That’s called bullying.

Would be different if you had her permission to post.

Edit: just wanted to add your first paragraph is totally irrelevant.

It’s not okay to bully your sister because you don’t get along.

sisuheart − YTA. This isn’t standard teasing of a sibling.

This was cruel and humiliating.

Whatever she was doing as far as being visible to passersby

and taking photos of herself didn’t make it ok for you to film her and post it yourself.

This group focused on the violation of consent

strike_match − You are most certainly TA. Posting a video without her permission

just to mock and humiliate her is an awful thing to do.

xamsyob20 − YTA. You shouldn’t post pictures of people on the internet

without their permission. You’d think this would be common sense,

but unfortunately most people just don’t get it.

These Redditors questioned your intent

[Reddit User] − “Am I the a__hole? I mocked my sister for something

that she probably didn’t want to tell me about anyways

because she knew I’d be a jerk about it.

But we don’t always get along so I thought it would be funny

to secretly film her in a bikini and share it online.”

That’s how you sound.

dennisthetiger − YTA by a long shot. You don't get to say

she was embarrassing herself, either.

I mean, if you find being a bikini model to be embarrassing,

it's not up to you to decide whether somebody else

should be embarrassed for being a bikini model.

To that same end, you should probably not be a bikini model.

ETA: Also, the filming of somebody with the intent to embarrass them

is not funny in the slightest - for the same reason

that you wouldn't like that if somebody did it to you.

vatoniolo − YTA. Why else would you post them if it wasn't to embarrass her?

The OP’s intention to post a funny, lighthearted video of her sister seems harmless in her eyes, but it’s understandable that her sister was upset by it. Privacy and boundaries are crucial, especially when it comes to social media and personal moments.

The OP may not have considered how her sister might feel about the video being shared, even if it was posted to a small, private group. Do you think the OP was justified in posting the video, or should they have respected their sister’s privacy more?

How would you handle a situation where a sibling’s actions feel embarrassing but aren’t meant to be harmful? Share your thoughts below!
