Woman Close With Couple Skips Their Wedding After Discovering She Was Never ‘Officially’ Invited

For two years she’d been tight with the couple. Celebrating engagements, exchanging gifts, drowning in group-chat chaos. Certain she’d scored a prime wedding seat. Then her cousin spilled the truth: no invite came because the bride and groom decided she could only attend if one of their single guys agreed to “bring her” as his plus-one.

Suddenly the deep friendship felt like a casting call for a date, and her spot at the table depended on some dude swiping right on the role of escort. She stared at the phone, stunned, wondering when loyalty turned into a romantic lottery ticket.

A cousin’s friend got sidelined from a wedding invite and offered a creepy plus-one workaround

'AITA if I don’t attend a wedding as a plus one because I didn’t get my own invite?'

I 25(F) am really close with my cousin 26(m) and over the past two years I’ve gotten close with the people in his friend group.

I’ve attended a lot of parties they’ve thrown, including birthday, Christmas and Halloween, as well as casual hang outs on a Friday night.

I’ve also invited them to my birthday party. I’m in their group chat as well. I felt like I was good friends with all of them, especially the girls.

One girl, let’s call her Kelly, is engaged a guy in the group, let’s call him Ken.

Kelly and Ken invited me to their engagement party about a year ago, to which I brought a gift and had a grand old time with them and all their...

About 3 months ago my cousin came over to hang out and he said “you didn’t get an invite to the wedding huh?”

And I said no I didn’t. He then told me that Kelly and Ken really want me to come but I must come as someone’s plus one,

and I had to pick which one of the guys in the group to be my date. This caught me off guard as I honestly found it tacky.

If they want me there why wouldn’t they just send an invite?? Also, if you don’t have space to host me, which I understand,

don’t try to set up a complicated work around to have me there. I just found it distasteful, but I was uncomfortable so I chose one of his friends.

3 months later I still hadn’t been invited to the wedding by that friend, so I figured he had found another date.

Didn’t really bother me because the whole situation made me kind of feel icky. Well, he texted me today asking me to be his date.

I told him I’d let him know because I might have work, after all, I didn’t get a save the date or an invite so I didn’t have the chance...

He told me the rsvp date is in 2 days. I also found this sort of tacky. Why invite me so last minute?? He said that Kelly and Ken told...

I thought we were all close enough friends that I would just get an invite. After all, I was invited to the engagement party,

to Kelly’s Birthday party, to Kens birthday party, and they came to my birthday as well.

I honestly thought we were all good friends, but now I’m thinking we aren’t as good of friends as I thought, or even friends at all.

This whole no invitation plus one situation makes me uncomfortable. Would I be the a__hole if I don’t attend the wedding because I’m uncomfortable with this?

Or maybe I’m being overly sensitive. I’d appreciate advice from an outside perspective

UPDATE: I’ve politely declined the guys plus one invitation citing that I have work. I’m not going to confront the couple or anyone else.

I know weddings are stressful and I don’t think this is worth making a big deal out of.

I don’t think I’ll be hanging out with my cousins friend group anymore, unless of course it’s for my cousins birthday party or something celebrating him.

Thanks for all your advice!

What Kelly and Ken did (or allowed to happen) is peak wedding weirdness: inviting someone to the engagement party, keeping them in the friend group, then quietly sliding them into the “maybe if there’s room” pile.

The core issue here is simple: a wedding invitation is the ultimate friendship receipt. Getting told “we really want you there… but only if you auction yourself off to one of the single dudes” feels less like an honor and more like being the consolation prize in someone else’s headcount Tetris.

Reddit user tealcandtrip nailed it: everything the OP heard was secondhand. There’s a solid chance the couple never actually signed off on this bizarre workaround and the cousin was just trying to soften the blow of the snub.

This isn’t just awkward, it taps into a bigger trend. A 2024 The Knot Real Weddings Study found that 52% of couples cited “budget and venue capacity” as the top reason for cutting guests. Yet somehow random Tinder dates still make the cut while actual friends get the boot.

Etiquette expert Elaine Swann has stated on this with Brides.com: “If you invited someone to your engagement party, excluding them from the wedding without a very good reason is considered a major faux pas”.

In the OP’s case, the “very good reason” appears to be… saving two entrees so the guys can bring strangers? Make it make sense.

The polite, drama-free decline the Redditor chose: blaming work was honestly masterful. No confrontation, no burned bridges, just a quiet exit from a friend group that suddenly feels a lot less friendly.

Sometimes the classiest revenge is realizing your seat was never actually reserved and deciding you’re perfectly fine dining elsewhere.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Some declare the OP is NTA and the couple has full control over their guest list.

Sebscreen − NTA. What are these games?! It's their wedding, they have full power over the guest list.

Apart-Ad-6518 − NTA "I must come as someone’s plus one, and I had to pick which one of the guys in the group to be my date."

Agree it's a tacky & potentially really uncomfortable situation.

dart1126 − NTA. Yeah, this is weird. It sounds like for all these other friends, plus ones were also offered.

Some insist the OP simply was not invited and should accept that fact without drama.

tealcandtrip − Nta, but… They don’t want you there. It’s not important to them that you are there.

You are not invited to this wedding. You may be allowed to come, but you are not wanted.

KitchenDismal9258 − NTA Sounds like you are not that close to Kelly and Ken If they wanted you they would've invited you.

[Reddit User] − NTA You have not been invited. Them playing games is just nonsensical, what even is that.

Some criticize inviting someone to the engagement party but not the wedding as tacky.

Salt_Phase3396 − Inviting someone to an engagement party but not to the wedding is super tacky.

Blue-eagle-23 − They should not have invited you to the engagement party if they weren’t going to invite you to the wedding. Tacky AF.

Some suspect the plus-one scheme is not from the couple but a friend or cousin trying to force inclusion.

nick4424 − Sounds like an elaborate plan to get you to date him.

surelytheresmore − I doubt the couple knows anything about this and just didn't invite you. This seems like a crazy plan of your cousin's doing

At the end of the day, our Redditor dodged a bullet wrapped in tulle and forced romance. She turned down the last-minute plus-one, kept the peace, and quietly stepped back from a friend group that showed its true colors.

So tell us. Was declining the mature move of the year, or should she have shown up just to see which guy drew the short straw? Would you still hang with the cousin’s crew after this? Drop your hot takes below!
