Woman Demands a Scent-Free Office, Then Starts Smelling Coworkers Like a Workplace Bloodhound

Workplace accommodations matter, but they can become difficult when one person’s needs begin controlling everyone else’s basic routines.

The challenge is finding a reasonable boundary without dismissing a genuine sensitivity.

One employee had grown used to company-wide reminders about maintaining a scent-free office because a coworker frequently complained about perfume and deodorant.

Recently, however, the situation escalated when the coworker began walking from desk to desk and smelling people in an attempt to identify the source.

During one of these searches, she accused the poster of wearing perfume and created a scene in front of the office.

The mysterious scent turned out to be ordinary bathroom hand soap.

Frustrated by the public confrontation, the poster firmly refused to stop washing their hands.

Scroll down to see whether readers thought that response crossed a line.

Worker pushes back after a scent-sensitive coworker starts policing everyone’s hygiene habits

not the actual photo

'AITH for refusing to stop washing my hands just because my co worker is "sensitive" to smells?'

I have this coworker who always says she's sensitive to smells. No one's

allowed to wear deodorant let alone perfume in the office because she

throws a mini tantrum if she smells anything except clean undiluted oxygen.

Usually she just complains to the boss, then everyone gets a generic

company wide email saying we're a scent free zone and blah blah blah. Eye

roll. Everyone back to work.

Now, she's been extra annoying these last few weeks. She keeps saying she

smells perfume. No one will admit to wearing any. We get emails about

office smells almost daily now and nothing changes. So she's decided to take

the law into her own hands so to speak.

Like 2 to 3 times a week she starts walking up and down the aisles, sticks her

head into each person's desk, takes a big whiff, and moves on to the next

desk. All to try to find the culprit.

On Friday, she did this again. I had just come back from the bathroom when

she got to my desk. She did her smell test on me and immediately lost it.

Apparently the perfume she's been smelling the last few weeks was coming

off me. After she made a scene in front of everyone, we determined what

she was smelling was hand soap I used in the bathroom.

She wasted enough time of my day by that point so I professionally told her

to f__k off and I'm not going to stop washing my hands because she's a

hypercondriac. The way I phrased it was like "hand washing with soap is a

non negotiable hygiene practice and i will not stop doing it. You can't

reasonably expect me to avoid that?"

This was Friday and now I'm dreading being back tomorrow. Our boss was

off Friday as well, so I expect I'm going to get pulled in to a meeting. AITH or

are these just the Sunday scaries?

Workplace consideration should protect someone’s health without turning every colleague into a suspect.

A person can have a genuine fragrance sensitivity and still handle that condition in ways that respect other people’s privacy, dignity, and basic hygiene.

The OP’s frustration was not simply about receiving repeated scent-free reminders.

The situation became intrusive when the coworker began walking between desks, leaning into people’s personal space, and smelling them without permission.

After discovering that the supposed “perfume” was bathroom hand soap, she publicly confronted the OP as though ordinary handwashing were misconduct.

The OP’s response was firm rather than especially diplomatic, but the underlying boundary was reasonable: she would not stop washing her hands to satisfy a coworker’s self-directed investigation.

A different perspective is that the coworker’s sensitivity may be real and physically distressing.

Fragrances can trigger headaches, nausea, respiratory symptoms, or other reactions for some people, and repeatedly detecting an unidentified scent could make her feel anxious and powerless.

Yet legitimate discomfort does not give her authority to inspect coworkers personally.

Once she began conducting aisle-by-aisle smell tests, she moved beyond requesting accommodation and assumed an enforcement role that belonged to management or human resources.

That guidance shows why the OP should not be expected to abandon essential hygiene.

If the supplied soap creates a genuine accessibility problem, management can consider replacing it with an unscented alternative.

That would address the trigger without treating handwashing itself as negotiable.

The employee’s needs deserve accommodation, but the process must remain structured and proportionate.

The OP may still be called into a meeting because the exchange became tense.

Her safest approach is to avoid labels such as “hypochondriac” and focus on observable conduct: the coworker entered her space, smelled her without consent, and publicly accused her over company-provided soap.

She can also request that future scent complaints go directly through management.

Sensitivity deserves compassion. Intrusive monitoring does not.

A functional workplace should protect both needs by changing the product or environment, not by asking employees to surrender hygiene and personal boundaries.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters called the sniffing and public accusations workplace harassment

SusieQTG − NTA. If there is an issue with the scent of the soap, whomever

stocks it will have to get unscented soap. Although at this time I'd say your

workplace is justified in requiring medical documentation. Otherwise, it's

time for you and your co-workers to file a complaint of harassment and her

creating a hostile workplace.

synthetic_aesthetic − Sniff test is harassment. Making a scene about this

issue in front of everyone is also harassment.

Automatic_Gas9019 − She needs to wear a mask. I would have already

reported her for sniffing me. If it comes up tomorrow tell them she is

creating a hostile work environment by policing smells

istoomycat − Hostile work environment. If she has to play bloodhound the

scents can’t be pervasive. They can’t fire her for her issue but must addtess

her wretched, intimidating behavior and effects on other employees. You

must stand together. (Deodorant comes in unscented).

These Redditors advised reporting the coworker’s behavior to HR or management

bookworm-1960 − NTA Does she not wash her hands after using the

restroom? If the company actually has a fragrance free rule, ask why they are

not purchasing fragrent-free soap? If there is an HR in your company, report

her for harassment. I would also ask them if they have some sort of medical

documentation on file justifying her behavior.

In over 30 years of working, I have never heard of an office rule like this for

one person unless it was the owner of a small company. If your boss says

anything, just point out that you are going to wash your hands, and if the

soap has a fragrance, you have no control.

Also, tell him/her that the coworker walking through the office smelling

everyone is creating a hostile work environment and is harassment.

tryingnottocryatwork − as the daughter of an HR director, you need to

contact HR asap

These users suggested masks and reasonable accommodations instead of policing coworkers

Different-Leather359 − Yeah I would have serious allergic reactions to some

perfume and lotions but what we mostly did was stand for them to not sit

near me. We couldn't stop people from wearing deodorant or washing their

hands, that's going overboard. If she's that sensitive she might not be able

to work in an office.

neverseen_neverhear − Buy her a box of mask and tell her this is her accommodation.

These commenters mocked the situation and criticized management for allowing it to continue

DazzlingPotion − Is this person doing any work or is she just wandering

around looking for fragrant things? Ridiculous. NTA

nanladu − Boss has let this nonsense go on too long.

innernerdgirl − Oh I can't wait for the update.

This situation highlights the difference between accommodating a workplace sensitivity and allowing one person’s concern to override basic boundaries.

A scent-free policy can be reasonable in some workplaces, but investigating coworkers by walking around and smelling them crosses into uncomfortable territory.

Handwashing with soap is a normal hygiene practice, and expecting someone to stop because of a scent from basic cleanliness is not a realistic solution.

The issue may not even be the soap, but how the situation was handled. A private conversation with management about accommodations would be very different from repeatedly inspecting coworkers.

Do you think the coworker’s sensitivity justifies her actions, or did she cross a line by policing everyone around her?

How should workplaces balance individual needs with reasonable expectations for everyone else? Share your thoughts below.
