Woman Fears Losing Her Boyfriend After One Drunken Joke Revealed Her Past

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

She thought one careless sentence spoken after a few drinks could destroy the relationship she had fought so hard to build.

After a work celebration turned into a late-night party, she found herself outside with coworkers, joking about bad decisions people make while drinking.

In that moment, she made a comment about the circumstances surrounding the births of her two daughters.

It was meant as a careless joke, but the way it sounded made her feel ashamed afterward.

Her boyfriend never heard the comment directly.

Someone else told him, and now she believes that person may have done it intentionally because she wanted him for herself.

But the damage was already done. Her boyfriend is a widower and a devoted father, someone she sees as the complete opposite of the person she used to be.

Now, after six months together, she is terrified that he will only see the woman she was before, not the person she has worked hard to become.

She knows her past includes painful choices and difficult experiences, but she also knows she is not the same person anymore.

The question is whether she can help him understand that one drunken mistake does not define who she is today.

Woman fears losing her new relationship after a drunken comment makes her past seem irresponsible

'I believe my (30F) boyfriend (37M) might dump me after a comment I made last Saturday about how I got pregnant?'

Last Saturday me and people from work had a dinner and a party

afterwards to say goodbye to a coworker that is moving to a different

branch on the other side of the country. After the restaurant many of us

brought our bf's, gf's husbands and wifes as agreed and kept on partying.

With time I got a bit drunk and at one point I was outside with a few

coworkers that smoke. We ere talking about bad decision while being

drunk and at one point I said something like "I got one of my daughters

made on a nightclub bathroom and the other one on the beach one night".

In our language it just sounds very ugly and irresponsible. My daughters are

from two different men and they both fled after they knew I was pregnant.

He didn't hear it because he was inside with the guys, but one of my

coworkers told him, a woman. And I believe she did it because she wants

him and this way she knew she would hurt our relationship.

He is a widower and has a 5 yo daughter and he is the opposite of what I

used to be. Calm, reliable, trustworthy, cheerful and a great father to his

child. I can't believe I may lose him for something like this, we've been

dating 6 months and I am in love with him, but alcohol took the best of me

and I behaved like my old self that night and talked like I used to talk, and

made an ass of myself.

He went on a work travel on Monday and arrived today and told me he

wants us to talk this afternoon and I fear he might dump me. How can I

convince him I'm no longer that person and that I've changed?

People often fear that one painful mistake can erase every good thing they have built.

A careless sentence, a moment of poor judgment, or a version of themselves they no longer recognize can suddenly feel like proof that they have not changed at all.

For many people, the hardest part is not facing another person’s disappointment, it is facing the fear that they will only be seen through their worst moment.

In this situation, the OP was not only worried about losing a relationship.

She was confronting a deeper fear: that her past would define her present.

The comment she made while drinking touched a sensitive part of her life, the circumstances surrounding her daughters’ births and the abandonment she experienced from their fathers.

Although she intended it as a dark joke among coworkers, the words carried a meaning that could sound careless or painful, especially to someone who values responsibility and family.

Her boyfriend, being a widower and a father himself, may naturally view statements about children and parenthood through a very personal lens.

A different perspective is that the boyfriend may not only be judging the sentence itself; he may be trying to understand whether the person behind the sentence matches the woman he has come to know.

People often reveal themselves through patterns, not isolated moments. Someone who has consistently shown love, stability, and responsibility is not automatically defined by one embarrassing comment.

At the same time, the OP’s fear shows that she understands words matter, especially when they involve something as important as her children.

This perspective is important because the OP does not need to convince her boyfriend through desperation or promises.

The strongest evidence of change is the life she has already created.

She has raised her daughters, survived difficult circumstances, and built a relationship with someone who sees her as a caring partner and mother.

The conversation with him is not about proving she has never made mistakes; it is about showing that she understands why the comment was hurtful and that her actions today reflect different values.

It is also worth recognizing that alcohol can lower judgment, but it does not remove responsibility.

A healthy response is not to blame the drink or the coworker who repeated the comment. Instead, acknowledging that the joke was inappropriate while explaining the real emotions behind it may allow him to see the person behind the mistake.

The OP cannot control whether her boyfriend stays, but she can approach the conversation with honesty and self-respect.

Real change is rarely proven by a perfect past, it is shown by how someone responds when they make a mistake.

A single moment of poor judgment should be viewed alongside the many moments of love, growth, and responsibility that came before it.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

Many commenters believe the incident is less about the specific words said and more about OP’s relationship with alcohol and what happens when drinking

laserox − Did he know you had a wild past? but alcohol took the best of me

and I behaved like my old self that night and talked like I used to talk, and

made an ass of myself. Do you think maybe you should reconsider your

relationship with alcohol? Are your wild days really only in the past?

These may be things he worries about, they would be dealvreakers for a lit

of people, especially people with children.

DrMichelle- − The issue is not how you behaved in the past. I'm assuming

he has an idea since you have two children with two different men and

neither is around. The issue is about how you behave now, which is not

good. Understand that his situation is different because he has a 5 year old

daughter that he's solely responsible for who has no mother.

He is not making decisions just for himself, and has to consider what kind of

influence the woman he chooses will have on his 5 yo female child. You

can't blame him for that, and you must respect that. The stakes are high for

him and he's not going to take any chances with his daughter.

That little girl has been through so much, losing her mother at such a

young age. The fact may be that you really aren't in a position or state of

mind to be a good stable influence and a role model for her.

You may have to accept that and be more concerned about yourself and

the affect your behavior may have on your own children. What if they ever

find out you said those things? It's concerning that you don't sound like you

are worried about that and you are more concerned about how it affects

your relationship with a guy.

It also doesn't sound like you are concerned about your relationship with

alcohol. Blaming what you said on the fact you were drunk isn't going to

help, because the issue is that you were drunk, not just the things you said.

So what do you do now?

You soul search now and decide what kind of woman and mother you want

to be moving forward and you take the steps you need to take to get there.

You should go sit in an AA meeting and listen to what they have to say.

Respect that you may not be in a position to be in a relationship with this

man and his child right now and work on making changes for yourself and

your children. If you do that, the future will take care of itself and if this

relationship is meant to be it will be.

If not, you will be in a better position to attract someone else that has the

qualities you are looking for in a man.

If you tell him that you have thought about the things I've just mentioned,

and tell him you have a plan to work on those things by not drinking,

attending AA and getting some type of therapy, you may have a chance to

save this and save yourself.

bluestjordan − OP, alcohol is not for you. Even if alcohol is served at a work

event, it’s not license to get so drunk and inappropriate. I think you should

reflect on your relationship with alcohol (given the theme you mentioned

in your post). That might come up in your conversation with your partner,

who is a father to a vulnerable young daughter.

Put yourself in his shoes. Would he want someone with an alcohol problem

around his 5 year old girl? But don’t do it for him, do it for yourself and your

own daughters.

ChocolateSnowflake − If you get so drunk that you have unprotected s__

with strangers twice resulting in pregnancy and get so drunk again that you

think this is acceptable conversation to share with coworkers, maybe the

chat he wants to have is about your alcohol problem.

cwtchyfemme − Maybe that much alcohol isn’t for you if you act in ways

that shame you the next day, and you revert to behaviour that is unhelpful

to the life you’ve tried to build since. Your old you isn’t decades in the past

when you’re only thirty right now, it’s still who you are, you’re just more in

control when sober.

He’s right to be hurt when he likely didn’t know quite all the details and it’s

far from how you act now. You have to respect whatever decision he makes

because you can’t undo what he saw and disliked.

Commenters highlight that workplace conversations can have lasting consequences

curlyq9702 − There are some people you can talk freely like that in front of

- coworkers ain’t it. You don’t Ever open that door in front of coworkers.

Best friends that participated in your shenanigans & Know you, sure. But

coworkers? Nah. They can s__ew up more than a relationship.

Whatsupdawg21 − Is this the way you want your coworkers to see you?

Few-Conversations − If you withhold information from your past to him, yet

tell your entire work circle, are you surprised he's upset?

whotookmyphone − If my husband spoke trashy like that around his

coworkers, I would be mortified. He probably feels like a chump, and is very

embarrassed.

BlackcatLucifer − He is rightly upset with you. You kept something from

him which you were ok blabbing to your work colleagues. Can you see the

inequality in that? It's up to him now whether he stays with you, it is not your choice.

The OP’s fear comes from knowing one careless comment could damage a relationship she deeply values.

Many readers may understand why her boyfriend feels hurt hearing such a personal story secondhand, but they may also recognize that one drunken mistake does not erase years of growth, responsibility, and love.

The real conversation is not only about what she said, but about who she is now and whether her actions match that change.

Do you think the OP can rebuild trust through honesty, or was the comment too damaging for the relationship? Share your thoughts below.
