Woman Hangs Up On Mom After Learning The Whole Family Had Brunch Without Her

Moving out of your childhood home often changes family routines, but most people still hope they will be included in important gatherings. Finding out everyone else spent time together without you can leave you wondering whether it was an innocent oversight or the beginning of a new family dynamic.

The original poster thought she was still close with her parents and younger sister, despite no longer living at home. Then her mother casually mentioned a family brunch that included everyone except her and her long-term partner.

The explanation she received only made the situation more confusing, leading to an emotional conversation that ended with her hanging up the phone. Read on to find out what happened.

A young woman felt excluded after her family held another gathering without inviting her

'AITA for hanging up the phone on my Mom after she didn’t invite me to a brunch that all my immediate family were at… because they “didnt have enough food”?'

I (24F) moved out of my childhood home one year ago. My sister (20F), who we’ll call E, still lives in our family home with our parents.

I’ve been in the same relationship for several years, and always brought him around to dinners and beach days, birthdays and yardwork days.

My sister however has been dating her boyfriend who we’ll call B for several months. I haven’t met him yet.

I expressed interest in having a double date, or at least meeting the guy face to face.

My sister always had something going on where that couldn’t be made to happens

Today while at my parents house my mom asked me if I could “guess” what they did that morning.

To my surprise she said they had had B over for brunch. I was shocked as this hadn’t happened before, and they hadn’t told me anything about it.

I asked why they hadn’t let me know about it since every other member of my immediate family was there.

My mom genuinely seemed confused why I wasn’t excited to hear all about this brunch, and I told her she should’ve called me.

My mom got defensive and stated she “didn’t think I’d want to come” (despite me clearly expressing interest previously)

and that they “didn’t have enough food in the house” to invite myself and my partner for brunch as well.

A ridiculous excuse, as my family are well off AND live 3 minutes from a grocery store.

My sister, E, even started to make excuses about how she thought I might’ve “been sleeping” as I work shift work.

I asked why no one had even texted me and they had nothing to say.

This is the third time I haven’t been included in distinct immediate family gathering or events since moving out of the house.

And every time I bring it up there is some excuse, and eventually someone will bring up the fact that I “don’t live there anymore”.

This time I told my parents they were excluding me whether intentionally or not, and I was sick of it. They called me dramatic and said I should get over...

I walked out the door and drove home. They called me three times on the way home, I picked up the third call.

It was my mom calling to say “just wanted you to know we love you very much”,

I told her I loved her too but they keep making me feel like I’m not a part of the family.

She dismissed my feeling entirely and l told me that it’s “not about you”. I hung up the phone on her.

AITA for telling hanging up the phone on my mom? Should I forget about it and move on?

One of the quietest transitions into adulthood is realizing that “home” begins to change, even when no one intends for it to. Parents continue living their daily lives, siblings develop new routines, and gatherings sometimes happen spontaneously.

Yet for the adult child who has moved out, being left out can feel less like a scheduling oversight and more like evidence that their place in the family is slowly disappearing.

In this situation, the OP’s reaction appears to be about much more than one brunch. She had repeatedly expressed interest in meeting her sister’s boyfriend, only to discover that every other immediate family member had already spent time with him. More importantly, she describes this as the third occasion where she learned about a family gathering only after it had already happened.

When her mother explained there “wasn’t enough food” and later suggested it simply “wasn’t about you,” the practical explanation failed to address the emotional message the OP had received. From her perspective, the pattern mattered more than the meal itself. Feeling excluded repeatedly can make even small events carry much greater emotional weight.

A different psychological perspective is that both sides may be reacting to different versions of what “family” now means. Parents whose adult children have moved out often begin having informal gatherings with the people already in the house without consciously thinking of them as family events.

Meanwhile, the child who has left home may still expect to be included in moments that reinforce their belonging. Neither expectation is inherently unreasonable.

The difficulty arises when repeated oversights are interpreted as indifference, while the people doing the excluding see them as ordinary day-to-day life. Intent and impact are not always the same, and repeated unintended exclusion can still leave lasting emotional wounds.

Family researcher Dr. Joshua Coleman, author of Rules of Estrangement, explains that many conflicts between parents and their adult children stem from differing expectations about closeness rather than a lack of love. Small patterns of feeling dismissed or overlooked can gradually erode trust if they are not acknowledged.

Verywell Mind similarly notes that emotional validation does not require agreeing with someone’s interpretation of events; it simply means recognizing that their feelings are real and understandable, even when intentions were different.

Viewed through that lens, hanging up the phone seems less like an attempt to punish her mother and more like a response to feeling unheard. Her mother called to reassure her that she was loved, which likely reflected genuine affection.

However, when that reassurance was immediately followed by dismissing the underlying concern, the conversation stopped feeling like comfort and started feeling like another example of not being understood.

At the same time, it is possible that the family truly viewed the brunch as an informal gathering rather than a deliberate exclusion. Even so, when similar situations happen repeatedly, it becomes reasonable for someone to question whether they still have the same place they once did.

Families naturally evolve as children become adults, but belonging should not quietly disappear in the process. Small invitations, thoughtful communication, and acknowledging someone’s feelings can often matter far more than the event itself.

People rarely remember whether there was enough food at brunch, they remember whether they felt there was a place waiting for them at the table.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters asked for more context about the family’s motives and household setup

jesusandvodka − NTA, but for background — did your family not want you to move out?

It’s oddly like they’re punishing you for not living there anymore. Weird AF if that’s the case

disagreeabledinosaur − When you say all of your immediate family, do you mean your mother, father and sister or are there more people?

These Redditors said OP overreacted because the people living together simply shared a meal

Swirlyflurry − YTA You’re getting upset that you’re not invited to “immediate family gatherings”, but that immediate family are all people who are living there!

Do you get upset that they have “family dinner” every night without you, too, since you don’t live there?

Your mom was telling you how they had a nice brunch with your sister and her boyfriend, and your immediate thought was “why isn’t this about me”.

You moved out.  Your family who all live at home are going to do things together without you, because you are not there.

You need to get your head around that, because your failure to accept it is causing issues with your relationship with your family and you are making yourself miserable.

ReindeerUpper4230 − Who is “everyone else in the immediate family”? Just your parents and your sister who still lives at home?

If so I don’t find it that odd. They invited your sister’s new bf over for brunch in the house they all live in. You no longer live there.

Only-Breadfruit-6108 − The residents of the house all ate a meal together.

One of the residents had their new partner over. Obviously you weren’t invited. You moved out. YTA. None of this was about you.

Forsaken-Ad1300 − This just sounds like a normal part of growing up and moving out. Every night is already a family dinner without you.

Also, it's not out of the norm for a bf or gf to be introduced to the parents alone.

I definitely didnt want my siblings around when I introduced my SOs for the first time

issy_haatin − You mean they had brunch with all the people living in the house and she introduced her boyfriend?

Yeah YTA You don't live at home anymore, they don't have to include you in every fart they make. Bf got introduced to parents, you'll meet him later.

Loose-Mousse1064 − YTA - of course people who live in the same house are going to be doing things together.

You can't expect them to invite you everytime that happens.

if you are going to be this dramatic about it them maybe you should just move back in. You cant throw a tantrum to try to control people.

gibberishxox − YTA. Your sister had her boyfriend over. That wasn't something you needed to be invited to. You do sound a bit dramatic.

This commenter felt OP made the moment about themselves and needed calmer communication

majestic_irony − YTA. Not in the worst sense, but in the needing better emotion regulation communication skills sense.

Sounds like it was an exciting and happy moment for your sister and you chose to make it about you,

when you could have waited until another moment to voice your hurt/frustrations with your parents, and phrased it like an adult.

You've also implied it's just your parents and your sister living at home now - your heading makes it sound like a much bigger deal

like they invited a bunch of people over rather than just her boyfriend.

What do you think? Should parents make an extra effort to include adult children in gatherings like this, or is it reasonable for everyday family life to change once someone moves out? Share your perspective in the comments below!
