Woman Keeps Towing Strangers From Her Empty Parking Spot, Then Explains Why She Won’t Stop

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Parking spaces can become a surprisingly heated issue, especially in apartment complexes where every spot has rules and every resident has expectations.

What some people see as an empty space, others see as something they are paying for and have the right to use.

The original poster (OP) lives in an apartment with an assigned parking spot included in the lease, even though she and her boyfriend do not own a car.

They use it for visiting family members, but the spot is often taken by unauthorized vehicles.

After repeatedly dealing with strangers parking there, OP started having the cars towed.

Now, some people believe she is being unreasonable, while others think she is simply protecting her property.

Read on to see why this parking dispute divided opinions.

not the actual photo

'AIO for towing people parking in a spot that I PAY FOR?'

I’m pretty sure I’m not but I can’t believe I’m actually getting pushback

from others I tell the story to.

My bf and I don’t have a car. What we DO have are guests that frequently

visit us, specifically our family. The apartment management knows this, and

issued us a parking permit (which has a number assigned to each unit) for

us to use anyway because…it’s in our lease agreement. We have an

assigned parking spot that is included in our monthly rent fee. So when our

relatives come over, they have a spot to park safely in, and a permit they

can hang on their mirror to ensure they don’t get towed. Simple, right?

Problem is, our spot is in a great area where people with NO PERMIT or

several cars like to park in. I’ve lost count the amount of times I’ve seen a

random car in my spot. What happens when my parents come over and my

spot is taken by some dude who has no permit? I have to find the owner

(annoying) and tell them to move. Some people have actually offered to

pay me monthly to use my spot, but when I told them that they need to be

at my call when I need it asap, suddenly it becomes unreasonable. I am also

NOT lending anyone my permit to use because I’ll get in trouble.

So we’ve just started towing people. I think I’ve already towed six cars in

the past three months. Now no one parks in my spot. And the best news?

Starting tomorrow, management will strictly enforce a parking policy that

states that any car with no permit will be towed, no exceptions. Great news for us.

I’ve told some coworkers this story. Some people tell me it’s within my

right, because I’m paying for the damn spot, not them. But shockingly, I’ve

had several others say that what I’m doing is an abuse of power, that I’m

inconveniencing people who “probably had no choice” but to park in my

spot (huh??). Others say it’s just a d__k move to tow people shamelessly like

that. “You don’t have a car anyway, might as well just let others use it!

Some people don’t have $400 to spare.”

So I offer you my story. Am I truly overreacting by towing people parking in

my spot, when I myself don’t have a car?

EDIT: the parking spots are numbered, and each unit has only one assigned.

If you want another spot it’ll be an extra $50 on your rent.

FINAL EDIT: the no exception policy has been enforced by management

and now I don’t have to do the calling anymore 😌

When something belongs to us, the hardest part is often explaining why we are allowed to protect it.

Many people feel uncomfortable enforcing boundaries when others may be inconvenienced, even when those boundaries exist for a valid reason.

The OP’s frustration was not really about a parking space alone; it was about repeatedly being forced to defend something that was already part of their agreement with their apartment complex.

At the center of this situation is a conflict between entitlement and access.

Some neighbors saw an empty parking spot and assumed it was available because the OP did not personally drive a car.

However, the OP viewed the space differently: it was a paid privilege attached to their home, reserved for their household and their guests.

The emotional exhaustion came from having strangers repeatedly make decisions about the OP’s property without permission, then expecting understanding when confronted.

A different perspective is that many people underestimate invisible needs.

Because the OP does not own a vehicle, outsiders may have interpreted the parking space as “unused.”

This is a common psychological mistake called the availability bias, people judge situations based on what they immediately see rather than the full context.

They see an empty spot, but they do not see family visits, lease agreements, responsibilities, or the stress of repeatedly solving the same problem.

The OP was not taking parking away from someone who needed it; they were preventing others from taking something that was already assigned.

This insight helps explain why the OP received criticism despite having a legitimate reason.

Some people interpreted towing as an aggressive action, while ignoring the repeated boundary violations that happened before it.

A single accidental mistake might deserve patience, but repeated unauthorized use after clear rules exist creates a different situation.

The OP was not creating a punishment system; they were using the enforcement method already provided by the apartment management.

At the same time, this story highlights why clear systems matter.

When a resource is shared by a community, confusion often turns into conflict.

The best solution is not expecting one resident to constantly negotiate with strangers, but having management enforce parking rules consistently.

The lesson is that kindness does not require surrendering personal rights.

People can understand that someone else may struggle while still recognizing that they are not entitled to what belongs to another person.

Boundaries often feel harsh to those who benefited from their absence, but they create fairness when applied consistently.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters agreed that the parking spot belongs to the OP because they pay for it

rollingman420 − Nor

Thats your spot, they'll learn eventually

indy3232 − You can stop the explanation after "its part of our rent. " Nor,

You pay for it. ..

YorkPepperMintPaddy − Provided there's a clear notice on the parking spot

that they risk being towed, you're NOR.

This group criticized people defending the illegal parkers

Travelr3468 − Well you've now found out which coworkers are reasonable

and sane, and which ones are selfish entitled asshats who don't have

respect for anyone else's things. They're the type of person who would

illegally park in your spot and then get mad at you for asking them to move.

There's no such thing as having no choice to park in a spot, yes it's a literal

choice they made to park there. You didn't shamelessly tow their car, they

shamelessly parked in your spot. It's unfortunate if other people don't have

$400 a month, but that doesn't justify them stealing from you. NOR.

And if you want more reassurance, the towing company wouldn't have

towed any of those cars if they weren't illegally parked in your leased spot.

IsRedditLeft − They know the risk when they break the rules. NOR anyone

defending this probably breaks similar rules and has entitlement issues.

JHutchinson1324 − NOR the people who think that you're wrong are the

people who park in other people's parking spots because they're too lazy

to find one of their own.

These Redditors supported towing as a reasonable consequence

Shore_line43 − NOR. I do have a car, so not the same. My complex offers

reserved spots for a monthly fee - $50 now. So $600 a year. There's

someone here who was towed at least twice in one month (that I know

about) for parking in a reserved space, after they'd warned her multiple

times when they contacted her to move her car.

Tow fees are over $400. You can't fix stupid, but you can make it expensive.

newbie527 − NOR It’s a d__k move to build apartments with inadequate

parking, but this is the world we live in. Keep towing. Don’t make deals for

your parking. Once you open that door you’ll lose control of the space.

Ambitious-Concern-42 −  “You don’t have a car anyway, might as well just

let others use it! Some people don’t have $400 to spare. ” is the kind of

logic you get from people who take from others without a second thought. NOR.

OP’s parking situation shows how a simple boundary can become controversial when other people benefit from ignoring it.

Although OP does not own a car, the assigned parking space is part of the apartment agreement and is reserved for their use, including when guests visit.

After repeatedly finding unauthorized vehicles occupying the spot, OP chose to enforce the rules by having them towed.

Do you think OP was being unreasonable by protecting a space they pay for, or should they have shown more flexibility because the spot sits empty most of the time?

How would you handle someone repeatedly taking something assigned to you? Share your thoughts below.
