Woman Kicks Sister Out After She Complains Her 3-Year-Old Is Ruining Her ‘Vacation’

Hosting family can be exhausting even under ideal circumstances. When someone arrives during a major life transition, expects to be looked after, and then complains about the children who actually live there, patience can disappear very quickly.

One Reddit user had just moved provinces to begin a doctorate program while raising two small children and still unpacking her new home. Her older sister chose that moment to book a two-week visit, despite being told the timing was not great. The poster still welcomed her, gave up her own bed, cooked for her, and tried to make the stay comfortable.

Then her sister complained that the three-year-old was ruining her “vacation” because of the child’s crying. That comment pushed the exhausted host over the edge. Scroll down to see why she decided the visit needed to end immediately.

'AITA for kicking my sister out after she said my kid was ruining her vacation?'

My sister (older) came to visit me in my new home recently after I just moved provinces 4 weeks ago to start a doctorate program.

With two small kids (and no family or friends other than my spouse who works long hours), we are still unpacking boxes.

My sister said she missed us a lot and wanted to come visit, booking herself in for 2 weeks.

I told her it wouldn’t be good timing, but after she booked I didn’t object because we are the only two siblings and we have a lot of problems

in our family so I figured she must’ve been feeling lonely and just wanted to spend time closer to her sister.

After catering to her hand and foot (imagine serving her plate to her at the table), including taking her places

where she couldn’t even open a door for me while I struggled with the kids on my own, and giving up my own bed for her to sleep in,

she said that my kid was ruining her ‘vacation’ and she wasn’t enjoying herself at all

because she had been crying throughout parts of the stay (said kid is 3 years old),

I lost it on her and kicked her out, telling her to pay a hotel or go home but that she was no longer welcome in my home. AITA?

Sometimes the most painful criticism comes from someone who arrived claiming they missed you. The OP had moved provinces only four weeks earlier, started a doctorate, was caring for two small children, and was still surrounded by boxes. She even warned her sister that a two-week visit was badly timed.

Instead of arriving prepared to fit into a busy household, however, the sister seems to have treated the trip like a vacation in which her younger sibling would provide the accommodations, meals, transportation, and attention.

That mismatch matters. The OP was already stretching herself by giving up her own bed, serving her sister meals, and managing outings while caring for the children.

In that context, hearing that her three-year-old was “ruining” the vacation was unlikely to register as a simple complaint about noise. It probably felt like criticism of the very family her sister supposedly came to visit.

There is also nothing unusual about a three-year-old crying, becoming overwhelmed, or reacting strongly to changes.

The American Academy of Pediatrics explains that preschoolers are still learning how to understand and regulate powerful emotions, while its guidance on crying notes that young children commonly cry when tired, frustrated, adjusting to changes, or unable to express themselves another way.

A recent move, disrupted household routines, and an unfamiliar long-term guest could easily make an already demanding developmental stage more intense.

The deeper issue is boundaries. Psychologist Jane Adams writes that family gatherings often reactivate old sibling roles and stresses that harmony depends on relatives respecting one another’s autonomy and limits. When a boundary is repeatedly ignored, she recommends stating it clearly and escalating consequences if necessary.

That framework makes the OP’s decision easier to understand. She had already communicated the first boundary before the trip: this was not a good time for an extended stay. Her sister booked two weeks anyway.

Once there, she apparently expected hospitality rather than recognizing that she was entering an overloaded household. The comment about the child was simply the moment when the accumulated resentment finally surfaced.

Kicking her out in anger was certainly dramatic, and a calmer conversation earlier might have prevented the explosion. The OP could also have enforced the original boundary more firmly instead of accepting a visit she knew would strain her.

But declining to continue hosting someone who openly resents the presence of your own three-year-old is not unreasonable. A guest can dislike the chaos of family life. What they cannot reasonably expect is for the children who actually live there to disappear so their “vacation” feels more relaxing.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors said the sister acted entitled by expecting a quiet, catered vacation in a family home

TheDudette840 − NTA. In no way did you offer her some vacation getaway.

You, reasonably, thought she wanted to visit your family and made every effort to keep her comfortable

(letting her sleep in your bed is wild, you and your husband are saints! ).

It is absolutely audacious of her to complain that your toddler, who lives in the home she asked to come stay in, cries sometimes.

Kicking her to the curb was your only option.

Bravo for immediately standing up for yourself and your family, rather than accepting her ridiculous behavior. 10/10.

ToastetteEgg − NTA. She wasn’t there to see you, she was there to be catered to.

Anyone who thinks a three year old never cries and stays quietly in the background is sorely mistaken.

You were wise to oust her so you can get back to adjusting to your huge move with your spouse and toddler.

These users saw the sister’s complaints as an extreme display of entitlement toward a family hosting her

j_jqqq − NTA This is some black-belt level entitled behavior. Has she done this before?

Sodium_Junkie624 − NTA That is entitled when she literally is in the house of you and your children

These commenters supported kicking the sister out and questioned why OP accommodated her so generously

Unlucky-Location-213 − To paraphrase: Good riddance to bad b__lshit! No, you are not the a__hole.

She's the AH to expect you to cater to her with small children, a new move and starting a PhD program. You know what's right.

Lilac_lady8 − Nta. You are not hotel. Why did you give her your bed? ??? Good for you to kick her out!

These commenters felt an invited or self-invited guest must adapt to the household, not control it

bamf1701 − NTA. It sounds like she did not ask you if it was OK to visit, she made the arrangements and told you she was coming.

That is no way for a guest to act - to invade your home like that.

Also, a guest, especially someone who invited themselves over, needs to respect that they are infringing on someone else’s life

and try to minimize the disruption. It’s only good manners.

And accusing a 3 year old of crying is like accusing the sun of shining - you know it is going to happen so you plan for it.

I think your sister should not expect to be welcomed in your home again.

WhatInTheAssPepper − NTA. Kicking her out was a completely valid reaction.

She was being incredibly selfish. If she wants the hotel experience she better go find one

These users mocked the idea that parents should disrupt their children’s routines so an adult guest can relax

crmom22 − Nta; my brother did this when my kids were little. Went as far as demanding we take the kids out so he could sleep. ‘He was on vacation!...

I have not seen or barely spoken to him in 8 years.

PMmeYourCattleDog − NTA You always protect the family you made from the family you come from.

Was kicking her out too abrupt, or was the complaint about the toddler the final proof that the visit needed to end?
