Woman Leaves “Nice Guy” On Read, Then His Sweet Personality Vanishes In Seconds

Online connections can feel exciting when someone appears kind, attractive, and emotionally attentive. A few good conversations may create the impression that you have finally met someone safe, especially when nothing in their behavior seems concerning at first.

The original poster developed a small crush on a man she met online after he came across as sweet, understanding, and socially confident. She was surprised that someone who seemed so appealing was still single, but assumed he had simply not found the right person.

Then she left one of his messages unanswered for a little while because she felt nervous and wanted time to respond. His reaction was immediate, aggressive, and completely unlike the person she thought she knew.

One short exchange exposed a frightening side of him and left her questioning how quickly charm can turn into control. Read on to see why she blocked him without hesitation.

'Had an experience with a "Nice Guy" today and I am shaken up'

So I met this guy online and at first he seemed great. He was handsome, and most importantly seemed sweet and understanding.

In fact, I was puzzled on how someone like him could still be single because he seemed to be the whole package.

He had a large group of friends which also made me question further how he still hadn't found a gf, but I brushed it off.

Maybe he just hadn't connected with someone on a deep romantic level yet. I developed a small crush on him.

Unfortunately, this stupid schoolgirl crush of mine meant that he made me nervous.

So he sends me a message and I leave him on read, but it was bc I was giddy and nervous thinking about how to reply later on.

Well... when he saw that I had left him on read, he COMPLETELY blew up. He started berating me by calling me a b__ch, telling me "f__k you" and to...

I told him his reaction was unhinged and scary (wish I had just silently blocked him tbh), to which he replied: _"Then don't do it again."_

If my blood had already gone cold, that response finished freezing it up. I quickly blocked him.

I know it may be stupid to be so shaken up, and this is probably something every woman has dealt with but the sudden switch was _jarring._

It was like Jekyll and Hyde. This situation has kind of scarred me a little bit, bc I already find it so hard to trust men as is.

I don't hate them... I want to love men, and I want one to love me. But I always have these bad experience with them and it breaks my heart.

EDIT: Thank you all for the supportive comments. I got an avalanche of them, and now that the post is locked, I cannot reply to them - but

I am pleasantly surprised with all the support, advice, and for those of you who shared your own personal stories too.

I also got some DMs, they were quite a bit and I will get to them. Just please do not scream at me and insult me if I take a...

Few experiences are more unsettling than watching someone’s warmth disappear the moment they do not receive the attention they expected. The shock comes not only from the insults, but from realizing that the kindness shown earlier may have depended on compliance rather than genuine respect.

In this situation, the OP did nothing harmful by leaving a message unanswered for a while. She was nervous, excited, and taking time to decide how to respond. Yet the man interpreted that ordinary pause as an offense deserving verbal punishment. His sudden stream of insults was disturbing, but the most revealing statement was, “Then don’t do it again.”

That sentence reframed his outburst as discipline. Instead of regretting that he frightened her, he implied that she could prevent future abuse by behaving correctly. Her fear was therefore not an exaggerated response; it was her mind recognizing an attempt to establish control.

A fresh perspective is that his pleasant beginning and later aggression may not represent two entirely separate personalities. Some people remain charming while an interaction confirms that they are wanted, admired, or in control. A minor disappointment then exposes how they respond when another person acts independently.

Being left on read may have activated feelings of rejection, but those feelings did not force him to become abusive. Emotionally responsible adults can feel embarrassed or disappointed without degrading someone. His reaction revealed that access to OP’s time was already becoming something he believed he was entitled to regulate.

Psychology Today explains that people with strong rejection sensitivity may interpret something as ordinary as a delayed text response as outright rejection. That perception can sometimes trigger hostility or rage toward the person believed to have slighted them. However, emotional sensitivity is an explanation for distress, not an excuse for intimidation.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline notes that emotional abuse includes conduct designed to frighten or control someone and identifies attempts to regulate another person’s time or actions as warning signs. It also emphasizes that early abusive behavior can be difficult to recognize because controlling partners may initially appear attentive and appealing.

Applied here, the frightening issue was not simply that he lost his temper once. He insulted OP, showed no remorse, and instructed her not to repeat the behavior that supposedly caused his aggression. That pattern shifts responsibility from the person choosing cruelty onto the person being targeted.

Blocking him was a protective response, not an overreaction. OP does not need to distrust every man because one person behaved dangerously, but she should trust the alarm she felt around this particular individual.

Early dating is partly about observing how someone handles inconvenience, uncertainty, and boundaries. Charm may create attraction; respect during disappointment reveals character.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters said OP reacted correctly and should keep the man blocked

MidLifeCrisis111 − You did not overreact. You responded appropriately to completely unhinged behavior. Keep him blocked.

Flimsy_Caramel_4110 − This guy is crazy. Completely. Full stop. Potentially dangerous too.

mojorific − P__cho. There are good guys out there. . don’t worry. You did the right thing.

These Redditors believed his true nature appeared early, helping OP avoid a dangerous relationship

[Reddit User] − Well now you know why. Luck you, his true colours were revealed sooner

Any_Cucumber8534 − You didn't doge a bullet, you dogeed the whole clip

ConsiderationMuted95 − I feel for you. I've heard horror stories from many women, all quite similar to yours.

I completely understand why some of them choose to ghost and block rather than risk the experience you had.

The true measure of an individual isn't in how they behave during the good times, it's how they respond to conflict and adversity.

This guy responded to being left on read with violent language and threats, and took no accountability.

I imagine he has a ton of smashed game controllers in his closet. I know it feels bad at the moment, but you got lucky.

If this had happened in person, you may have become his next smashed controller :S

These users found his extreme reaction to being left on read deeply alarming

CuriousLF − Scary when someone’s ego is wounded by just one thing not happening at the right time.

Existing-Network-267 − Oh wow Being left on read shouldn't result in that

These folks argued that self-proclaimed “nice guys” may hide cruel or manipulative behavior

catchmeifyoucanlma0 − Welcome to the club, wolves in sheep's clothing don't adhere to a gender.

Met men and women like this. Simply put, I trust animals more than humans at this point.

[Reddit User] − That's awful. I'm sorry you had to go through that. That guy in insane.

On a separate note, I hate how 'nice guy' is such a derogatory term. These nice guys aren't actually nice at all.

I get it to a degree. Anyway, rant done. Please stay safe OP, you absolutely didn't overreact

Was his behavior an isolated tantrum, or did “don’t do it again” expose a controlling pattern waiting to grow? Would you silently block someone after an outburst like this, or send one final message first? Share the verdict below.
