Woman Loses 16 Kg After Starting a Fitness Journey With Her Coworker, Then Snaps When She Keeps Complaining

in Social Issues

Two people can start with the same goal and still end up wanting very different things from each other. One may want accountability and action, while the other may simply want empathy and companionship without being pushed toward change.

A Reddit poster learned that distinction after spending months exercising alongside a coworker who shared many of the same struggles with weight and body confidence. At first, they encouraged each other through difficult workouts, but the coworker eventually began skipping sessions more often. What frustrated the poster was that the complaints never stopped.

After hearing another comment about how difficult life was at their size, she responded sharply and told her coworker to do something about it instead of constantly complaining.

The exchange caused an immediate fallout, but a later conversation revealed that the coworker had been upset about something the poster never realized. Keep reading to see why their original fitness pact became a workplace conflict.

'AITA for telling my coworker to either stop whining over her weight?'

(I'm sorry if my english is not perfect but I'll try my best)

I (27F) and my coworker (25F) are both obese.

We worked together for almost 4 years now and last year we decided together to start working and lose some weight.

I was 113 kg (175 cm height) then and she was around 105 (170 cm height).

We decided to start with running because it was almost free and we heard it's easiest way to start working out.

It was hell. No sugarcoating it. We both hated it and wanted to give up.

But for me carrying all that weight around, having trouble with walking up stairs and hearing comments about me

(and sometimes there were really terrible one) was worse so we pushed forward.

After around 2 months in she started to skip our running sessions more and more and after I asked why she just made excuses

(she can't. doesn't feel like it today. Is busy or just simple "I can't")

Right now I'm at 97 kg and I know I have more to go (my goal is 70 but I know it will be hard)

but I just can't stand her whining all the time how WE are so fat. How her body hurts.

How she hates how she can't find clothes for herself and so on.

So at monday when I asked her is she wants to join me to the gym or a run and she declined but hour later she started her usual

"Isn't that unfair that fat girls like us have it so hard?" I kinda snapped. I'm not sure why.

Maybe it was because I'm still super subconscious about my body I just went "Well if you hate it so much maybe stop making excuses and move your ass?".

She called me a b\\ch and doesn't talk to me since.

My other coworker said I am an a__hole and I feel bad but at the same time I am so tired of hearing all that.

Update: Thank you everyone for so many responses. I appreciate every single one (even the one who called me an a*hole).

I am aware that I shouldn't use the words I used - emotions can make you say stuff you don't usually say I guess.

Today when she finally decided to talk to me again I tried to apologize but it turns out she's "mad I didn't drop exercising when she said she doesn't like...

because we were supposed to do it together." She never mentioned anything like that before so I was a little confused.

I said that I don't wanna be overweight anymore and will continue exercising and she called me "f__phobic for not wanting to be fat, like it's something worse" (her exact...

I think I will just drop the weight topics at all at work because I won't argue with that anymore. It's tiring.

My boss allows me to wear headphones at work and maybe it's finally time to start using them.

Btw. I know diet is important I wouldn't lose so much weight without it. I just didn't mention it in the post because it wasn't the main topic ;).

Sometimes two people can begin the same journey together and discover that they no longer want the same destination. The OP and her coworker originally agreed to exercise and pursue weight loss together.

Months later, the OP was still committed to that goal while her coworker had largely stopped exercising. Neither choice automatically makes someone wrong. The conflict began when one woman continued regularly complaining about her weight while apparently resenting the other for continuing without her.

The OP’s frustration is understandable. Listening repeatedly to someone describe a problem while rejecting invitations to do something they once agreed to do can become exhausting.

The update makes the dynamic even clearer: the coworker was apparently upset because she expected the OP to stop exercising when she stopped. That is an unreasonable expectation. Starting together does not create an obligation to abandon a personal goal together.

But “stop making excuses and move your ass” was still unnecessarily cruel. Weight is emotionally loaded, and shame is particularly ineffective as motivation.

Psychologist Rebecca Pearl, Ph.D., who studies weight stigma, explains that people can internalize negative beliefs about their body size, damaging self-esteem and quality of life.

Research reviewed by the American Psychological Association shows that weight stigma is associated with psychological distress and can actually discourage physical activity rather than motivating healthier behavior.

That matters because the coworker’s constant complaints may reflect genuine body dissatisfaction rather than laziness. The OP does not have to solve those feelings, but mocking or shaming her will probably make them worse.

At the same time, respecting larger bodies does not require someone to remain at a particular weight themselves. Choosing to exercise, change eating habits, or pursue weight loss for personal reasons is not inherently an attack on people who make different choices.

The CDC even notes that supportive friends can help people maintain health-related behavior changes, but support works because it encourages someone’s own goals—not because friends must make identical choices indefinitely.

The healthiest part of the update is therefore the OP’s decision to retire weight discussions at work. She can apologize for the insulting language without apologizing for continuing to exercise.

If her coworker starts another conversation about their bodies, a simple boundary—“I don’t think talking about our weight together is good for either of us anymore”—would be more useful than another argument.

Both women deserve control over their own bodies. One can stop pursuing weight loss, and the other can continue. Friendship does not require synchronized choices, and body acceptance should never mean demanding that someone else abandon goals they have freely chosen.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors praised OP’s discipline and understood the frustration with someone who complains but won’t change

R4ng3r_ − NTA. The weight didn't come on overnight and it won't come off overnight but you have decided,

unlike her, to be serious and take the steps to lose weight. Congrats to you and good luck on your journey.

Camping_Queen_13 − NTA. It probably hurts that she's also calling you a fat girl when you're working so hard to not be one.

I think what she really wanted was someone to commiserate with about how hard fat girl life is.

I'd be frustrated too, if your life is so hard why not try changing things?

quorvayn − Dropping nearly 16 kilograms requires incredible discipline,

and it’s completely reasonable to lose patience with someone who complains while refusing to put in the effort

These commenters felt OP’s frustration was valid, but the harsh response crossed a line

Lazy-Restaurant-1979 − Oh ESH. Look, it's perfectly understandable to be annoyed that she complains but is unwilling to do anything about it.

People doing that is one of my big pet peeves. But, you lost the moral high ground when you responded in the way you did.

The mature, adult thing to do would be to kindly, but firmly, tell her that you are not comfortable with her talking to you about this issue

and to please stop (and that conversation should have probably happened a while ago before you got to the point of blowing up at her).

And then you make sure that you stop talking about your weight loss journey and working out, and inviting her along as well.

This entire topic should just be off limits for you two.

terminally-happy − ESH. I’m with you fully but your comment was just too much for someone who is really struggling.

I think she probably feels like she can confide in you about this topic because it’s so sensitive

and you’re open about working out and wanting to lose weight so she felt safe with you to complain.

I get it, after a while those comments can make you feel invalidated after all the hard work you have been doing.

I lost 50 pounds this year and everyone accused me of using medications when I’ve been in the gym 5 days a week and eating the same food almost everyday.

It’s not easy! And you should feel proud of the work you’ve done.

But the comment you made is not going to motivate her, it’s going to isolate her further.

And now maybe she feels like she doesn’t have anyone to workout with even if she did feel motivated to do it.

Words cut so deep man and it’s not something you can take back. Hope you guys can work it out and good luck with your journey!

Ok-Roof-7599 − ESH. Yes, the whole set up is frustrating. She stopped working out and continues to complain. I get it.

But also losing weight is really hard to do and everyone loses weight or holds on to weight differently.

She may have felt worse then you doing the same activity.

She also may have not seen the same wins early on to motivate her to keep going. She may have other barriers in her life to prevent her going.

Losing weight is such a mental game and its not fair to assume someone's experience is the same as ours.

If you were feeling frustrated you could have had a normal conversation with her instead of bottling it up and exploding at her.

CharmingDandy − As an obese person, running is really hard for me. It's very hard on my body, joints

and my b**bs/rolls/fat bouncing around. I recommend low impact excercises instead like a rebounder, stationary bike, etc.

Also, if you are unfit, you need to start slow and then ramp up. Also, actually starting an excercise is difficult for me, so I am not consistent with my...

If my brain decides that I will not excercise today, then I simply cannot. So when I get the motivation/capacity to do it, I do it.

Mental health and other things can also impact your capacity. So maybe recommend a different routine for your coworker.

(And potentially therapy, if it is mental health reasons that is causing the lack of commitment)

But her body is ultimately her responsibility and her comments do sound like it can get frustrating/annoying. So I definitely understand where you are coming from,

but I think your snappy remark was uncalled for if you haven't addressed it beforehand already.

It seemed like quite a jump from annoyance to being rude instead of communicating respectfully.

I realise you probably have had these thoughts for a bit and that is why you snapped, but that doesn't make it okay.

I think you should apologize for snapping and being rude and calmy explain that you are trying your best to improve

and have had good results so far, so she can no longer clump you into "we are fat". Tell her how it makes you feel.

Also tell her that while you understand her complaints and what she is experiencing is very real,

if she is NOT going to do something to improve her circumstances when she is capable of making a change, then you don't want to continue to hear about it.

Also explain how it makes you feel. ESH Good luck

pool_fizzle − ESH. Btw, the best way to lose weight is to eat less. Working out is only of minimal help.

Example, running for 30 minutes at a light pace burns about 200 to 300 calories. A 12 oz coke has about 140 calories.

So if you're drinking 4 sodas a day, then you need to run for an hour just to counter the 4 sodas.

Much easier to cut the soda and drink water instead. Of course, diet and exercise combined is the best choice.

But exercise without attention to diet is the hardest way to lose weight.

These users suspected the coworker mainly wanted sympathy and an audience for her complaints rather than practical solutions

weedils − NTA - even if food addiction and obesity is incredibly challenging, it is definitely a thing you can change.

There are so many different tools available aswell.

Mewsiex − NTA It seems like your coworker doesn't want to lose weight, she wants an audience for her complaining.

Some people love complaining and have no intention to do anything to change their situation

because then they would not have material for their complaining. Congrats for staying consistent and doing something for your health.

On days when it's ugly outside, you could try some African Dance workouts (there's many free on youtube).

It's high intensity and it works all your muscles. Also, it's fun.

Was the poster justified in finally losing patience, or did the way she delivered the message make everyone responsible for the fallout?
