Woman Loses Every Tooth at 28, Then Says She Has Never Felt More Hopeful About Her Future

For many people, losing all their teeth at 28 would feel devastating. For this woman, however, it marked the end of years of constant pain and the beginning of a healthier life.

She grew up without much guidance about dental care and later found herself unable to afford the extensive treatment she needed. Over time, eating became difficult, smiling felt embarrassing, and severe toothaches became so normal that she barely remembered what life without them felt like.

When a dentist finally removed her damaged teeth, the full extent of the infection shocked even the medical team. Despite the swelling and discomfort of recovery, she says she has never felt more hopeful. Scroll down to read why this painful procedure became one of the happiest moments of her life.

A 28-year-old woman begins a painful but hopeful new chapter after having all her teeth removed

'I'm 28 years old and as of yesterday, I have no teeth'

I've had bad teeth my entire life.

I was adopted and raised by older people who had already had their teeth removed so dental hygiene wasn't something that crossed their minds.

They also were not very well educated on how important dental health was considering the way they grew up.. I do not blame them for it.

They didn't know much better.. All of my teeth were either broken, decaying, or both.

I was very self conscious about my smile and I never wanted to talk to anybody.

I also never had the funds to afford much dental work so for years, I have been suffering.

I couldn't eat properly, I had nights where I couldn't sleep because if tooth pain, and I was just all around miserable.

I had constant toothaches and abscesses. It was hell.

As my dentist was pulling my teeth yesterday, she told me almost every single tooth I had was abscessed.

Every one was infected and she told me she was sorry because I had to be in pain.

She said I was one tough woman because most people she knows with

even one abscess is in excruciating pain and I was walking around like nothing was wrong with more than 15 abscesses.

I told her it was an every day thing for me so it was really all I knew. I didn't know a life without mouth pain.

It's the day after, my gums are very swollen, they're sore, talking and eating is really weird, but I am so happy for it.

I'm happy to have the soreness and the forced soft food diet and the strange sensation of closing my jaw more than it should

because I know this is the beginning of a better, happier, healthier me. I get my dentures on a few months and that'll be a new adventure in itself.

I'm just so happy. I hate sounding like I'm bragging so I can't really talk about this with anyone I know.

I just wanted to share my happiness with someone. Thanks for listening ❤️

Edit: thank you all for the well wishes and the awards :) I understand the "rip inbox" phrase now :P

I am unable to answer all of your comments but I truly appreciate all of you.

I also appreciate that there was not a single rude comment or judgemental person.

You're all exactly what everyone should strive to be like ❤️

A couple rude comments were posted but hey, what can ya do lol. I'm not here to justify my life to anyone so they can continue being angry and bitter.

Once I receive my dentures, I'll be posting an update with them, as requested kindly by a few people :)

Living with pain for long enough can make suffering feel ordinary. People adapt because they have no other choice, quietly reorganizing their meals, sleep, conversations, and confidence around discomfort that others may never notice.

When relief finally becomes possible, the path toward healing may look frightening or unconventional from the outside. To the person who has endured years of agony, however, even temporary soreness can feel like freedom.

For this 28-year-old woman, losing every tooth was not simply a dental procedure. It marked the end of an existence shaped by infections, embarrassment, financial limitations, and relentless pain. She had learned to avoid smiling and speaking because her teeth affected how she believed others would see her.

Eating became difficult, sleep was repeatedly interrupted, and abscesses became so familiar that she stopped recognizing her endurance as unusual.

Her happiness afterward may surprise people who associate tooth removal only with loss. Emotionally, though, she was not celebrating the absence of her teeth. She was celebrating the disappearance of a daily threat that had controlled much of her life.

A fresh perspective is that her reaction resembles someone leaving a harmful environment. Outsiders may focus on what has been lost, while the person involved feels relieved by what can no longer hurt them. She may still face grief, adjustment, altered speech, and anxiety about dentures.

Yet those challenges now belong to recovery rather than deterioration. Her story also exposes the unfair shame surrounding dental problems. People often treat damaged teeth as evidence of laziness, even though childhood circumstances, limited education, finances, fear, and access to treatment can strongly influence oral health.

The American Psychological Association explains that chronic pain is not purely physical; it also has emotional and psychological dimensions that can affect mood, relationships, and daily functioning. Psychologists therefore help patients address the distress, frustration, and behavioral changes that often develop around persistent suffering.

Research published through the National Institutes of Health similarly links dental decay and tooth loss with difficulties involving eating, speaking, sleeping, appearance, social comfort, and self-esteem.

Cleveland Clinic also notes that untreated dental abscesses can spread beyond the affected tooth and damage surrounding tissues, making professional treatment essential rather than cosmetic.

These insights explain why the dentist’s recognition affected her so deeply. Being called “tough” validated pain she had spent years minimizing. The procedure also replaced helpless endurance with a structured future: healing gums, learning to eat differently, receiving dentures, and eventually smiling without fear.

Her joy is not bragging. It is the emotional release of someone who has survived an invisible burden. The most compassionate response is not to question how her teeth reached that condition, but to celebrate that she finally received care. Recovery may be uncomfortable, yet she is moving toward a life where pain is no longer the first thing she expects each morning.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors congratulated OP on becoming pain-free and gaining a new smile

tIreneAusurusRex − I'm proud of you. Congrats on getting a new smile and being pain free

Sharionia − I'm 32 years old and have had all my teeth pulled out 3 years ago. I couldn't be happier, I had the same problems you had.

It was the best decision of my life! So I wish you all the best in healing and congratulations on your new smile!

CanAhJustSay − I've had one abscess where I thought my head was going to explode (and it would have been a relief from the pain)

and one where I had nothing more than discomfort. You are going to have a wonderful smile and please, post it here

(for anonymity, you don't need the rest of your face!) In the meantime, these mask-wearing days are the absolute perfect time for work like this.

Be proud of yourself.

This group shared similar stories showing that dentures can greatly improve comfort and quality of life

computer_scare − Sometimes that's just bad luck with genes.

A friend of mine comes from a family where everybody has messed up teeth and ended up getting dentures in their thirties.

He would obsessively brush his teeth and floss multiple times a day. He would go twice a year to get them cleaned at the dentist.

He still ended up getting really bad tooth decay and ended up getting most of them pulled and replaced with dentures in his thirties.

So even if you had been really on top of things this still could have happened.

The good news is that he had constant toothaches too and is actually a lot happier now with the dentures.

I think once you get used to them you'll be a lot happier with them too.

GreenTravelBadger − Similar thing happened with my second cousin - and after those rotten teeth were gone, she was a whole different person!

She wasn't in continual pain anymore, she smiled and laughed and gained a much-needed few pounds because now she could actually eat food without hurting.

She told me she intended to go on a Kiss-O-Rama once her mouth was fully healed.

I approved of this plan, and possibly that's something you can look into as well? I am so happy for you!

These commenters related through their own struggles with dental care, finances, or mental health

Handsome_yoda − Cheers to happy beginnings :). I am 21 and coming from a poor family, never had been to a dentist before.

I finally started an internship this jan and made it a point to visit a dentist. Only 2 cavities and cleaning, guess I got lucky

Bitersnbrains − I suffer with bad teeth due to depression and childhood trauma and your post hit me in the feels so much,

especially the living with constant pain & not wanting to smile. Good luck on this entire journey.

Please keep us updated! Wishing you oodles of happiness and good health.

These users emphasized that fixing the dental problems could improve OP’s overall health and ability to eat

lindPelican − You're doing a lot for your overall health too! There's a pretty strong correlation between periodontal disease

and heart disease so you may have literally saved your life. It's only going to get better from here, I'm sure! Very happy for you!

24-7Sunshine − Wow pain free and soon able to eat better. I bet you’ll have such a great smile now too!

And lots of reasons to smile. Glad you are taking care of yourself.

This Redditor shared a touching story about being loved regardless of imperfect teeth

JVM_ − My 100 year-old Grandma tells the story of her getting her teeth pulled before she got married.

She didn't want to get married as she felt ashamed about her teeth. Grandpa: I'm marrying you for you, not for your teeth.

Do you think stories like this help reduce the stigma surrounding dentures and major dental treatment? Have you or someone you know experienced a life-changing improvement after finally addressing a long-term health problem? Share your thoughts in the comments.
