Woman Offers Friend A $600 Cruise, Then Gets Blamed For Refusing Her Rule-Breaking Plan

Cheap travel can be amazing when everyone understands exactly what is included and agrees to the same rules. I think the problems start when one person wants all the benefits of a heavily discounted trip while refusing the costs that make the deal work.

One Redditor regularly uses credit card and casino rewards to book cruises for a fraction of the normal price. When a friend showed interest in joining an upcoming seven-night trip, the OP explained that her share would be around $600, including taxes, gratuities, drinks, and dining.

The friend initially seemed interested, but later decided she only wanted to pay the basic fees and planned to avoid the rest by skipping gratuities and sneaking alcohol onboard. Since the package had to apply to everyone in the booking, the OP told her not to come. Scroll down to see why that decision quickly turned into a friendship dispute.

A traveler offers her friend a heavily discounted cruise, but they clash over fees and ship rules

'AITA for uninviting my friend from a vacation because she wanted to break rules and be cheap?'

One of my favorite hobbies is using credit card and casino comps to get cheap trips.

I have several cruise lines that I get “free” offers for where I pay taxes and fees (usually less than $200)

for a 7 night cruise plus extras like gratuities for the staff and any drink or dining packages I may want.

My friend had asked what vacation plans I had coming up since I travel quite a bit

and I let her know I had an upcoming trip booked and could add her for around $600 if she was interested.

This is for 7 nights in a mini suite (balcony room, more space, just below the suite level).

She seemed interested so I told her to let me know.  I gave her the breakout of costs because I wanted to be transparent…

$160 for taxes and fees and $455 for the drink/dining/gratuities to be covered.

She seemed interested so I asked her to double-check the dates worked for her and to let me know if it worked for her..

She came back to me a couple of days later and said that she’d be good with the $160, but had done research and didn’t want to pay the other...

because she read that it’s not mandatory that you pay gratuities to the staff and she could order something online so she could sneak alcohol onto the ship.

Unfortunately, the way this package works is that everyone in the booking has to order it if one person does.

I want the convenience of knowing my gratuities are paid and that I can order a drink regardless of where I am without going back to the room to make...

I like getting a couple of coffees in the coffee shop, drinks by the pool, wine with dinner, and maybe a couple of drinks in the club at night

without having to go back to the room anytime I want something. To me, this is just a part of the experience of being on vacation and doing what I...

I told her that if she felt that way that maybe it’s best that she not come with me and do her own thing,

but now she’s mad at me because she’d have to pay close to $4000 to do this trip without my benefits.

I don’t mind paying for the extras for myself and just count it as a cost of the vacation but I don’t really want to pay for her extras as...

AITA for wanting to do vacation the way I want and not giving in to her wanting to be cheap on this?

I know for a fact that she can afford it, she just read something on the internet making her think she’s smart to get around the “rules”.

A vacation stops feeling like a gift the moment one person is expected to sacrifice the experience they planned in order to accommodate somebody else.

The OP was offering her friend access to a seven-night cruise that would cost roughly $600 because of benefits she had earned. Her friend was free to decide that the additional package was not worth $455. The conflict began when declining that expense effectively meant asking the OP to change how she wanted to vacation or subsidize the difference.

Emotionally, both women seem to value money differently. The friend sees avoidable charges and immediately searches for ways around them. The OP sees gratuities, drinks, coffee, dining, and convenience as part of the experience she intentionally purchases. Neither philosophy is automatically wrong.

But sneaking alcohol aboard and expecting a travel companion to abandon a package she enjoys transforms ordinary frugality into incompatibility.

That distinction matters. People sometimes assume that because someone has access to a major discount, they should become increasingly generous: You’re already saving thousands, so why does another few hundred matter?

But the OP’s benefits do not create an obligation to finance someone else’s preferred version of the trip. Her friend was being offered access to the opportunity, not ownership over its terms.

Psychologist Irene S. Levine, a friendship expert and former professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine, specifically recommends discussing travel expectations before friends leave together.

Writing in Psychology Today, she identifies how costs will be divided, eating and sleeping arrangements, itineraries, and expectations about shared versus independent activities as issues that should be settled beforehand to prevent resentment later.

Verywell Mind similarly notes that financial differences between friends can produce embarrassment, resentment, guilt, and anxiety. Setting financial boundaries and being honest about what each person can or wants to spend can protect the friendship better than silently absorbing uncomfortable expenses.

That is why uninviting the friend may actually have prevented a much uglier argument at sea. Imagine seven days of disagreements over drinks, gratuities, dining expenses, or ship policies after both people are already committed to sharing a cabin. Discovering incompatible expectations beforehand is useful information.

The OP could probably drop the label “cheap,” because her friend’s spending priorities are hers to choose. But the same principle works both ways. She cannot demand that the OP restructure a vacation to accommodate them.

Sometimes the best person to travel with is not the closest friend. It is the friend whose budget, expectations, boundaries, and idea of having fun can comfortably coexist with yours.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These users saw the friend as entitled, difficult, and not worth traveling with

Dizzy_Process_7690 − NTA. Not sure if that is a real friend but they are entitled and a mooch.

Minute-Actuator-9638 − NTA she’s ridiculous.

CatsMom4Ever − NTA.   So. She doesn't want to tip people who are grossly underpaid?

Plus trying to sneak booze on a cruise ship is a great way to be banned for life.   I'd find someone else to go with too

These commenters said OP set fair terms, and the friend was free to accept or decline them

dinamet7 − NTA. You set the pricing and the terms for sharing your room, she can decide to opt in or opt out.

Yankeeboy7 − NTA You are the one who planned everything and invited your friend, if she wants to go she can follow your

guidlines or pay 4000$ herself its up to her. Also way to go getting 4000$ down to 600$, can we be friends lol

Retlifon − You didn’t uninvite her. You invited her on an a trip which would cost about $600. She said no.

That she proposed something unworkable afterwards doesn’t mean you uninvited her.

These Redditors warned that sneaking alcohol or dodging rules could get both travelers in trouble

GeminiAtl − Cruise lines are cracking down on sneaking alcohol onboard, and they also have the internet and can see all the ways of doing it.

They are banning people, and whoever is in the room with them, if they try to sneak alcohol on-board.

Seven days in an inside cabin for $600 including taxes, fees, beverages and gratuities is a steal, and she would be getting a balcony.

She needs to either do some price comparing or get a tent and go camping.

Dangerous_Prize_4545 − "She did the research on how to scam, lie,

sneak and cheat ppl out of well-deserved tips on a generous cruise that would cost her less than $100/day for food, drinks, gratuities and taxes. "

Charming. You will not have fun traveling with someone like this and she's liable to get your account flagged for this activity.

Skip the drama with her. Go by yourself. NTA.

Just tell her that it doesn't look like it will work out. And do not let her backtrack.

She will cheat you or leave you holding the bag on payment, etc. Or tell her she can just book her own room on the cruise.

These Redditors said the friend rejected a good offer and only regretted it after doing research

Aerumvorax − NTA. You made them an offer that they turned down due to cost.

Then they started researching and found out that the deal would have been good for them and now they're sour that they missed it.

They should have done the research first to be able to make an educated decision and since they didn't they're now having to pay the i__ot tax.

Boogity2024 − Are you taking applications to become your friend? I'm a rule-follower.

Would you still travel with someone after this disagreement, or would the attempted shortcuts make you choose another cabin mate? Share your take below.
