Woman Politely Questions a Takeout Rule, Husband Says She’s Teaching Their Kids to Be Entitled

Restaurant policies exist for a reason, but asking a polite question is not always the same as demanding special treatment. Sometimes there is room for flexibility, especially when a customer understands the downside and is willing to accept it.

One woman found herself arguing with her husband over exactly that after calling a restaurant for takeout. She wanted a specific appetizer, but the employee explained that it was not normally packed to go because it would lose its crispness. Instead of getting upset, she asked whether they would still make it if she accepted that risk.

The restaurant agreed, but her husband immediately accused her of being a “Karen” and said she was setting a bad example for their children. Scroll down to see why a simple food order turned into a much bigger disagreement.

She politely asks a restaurant to make an exception, but her husband calls her a “Karen” and questions her parenting

'AITK because I asked a restaurant to ignore their togo policy for me?'

I (f35) have been craving crispy spring rolls from a particular restaurant for a while.

Last night I asked my husband (m36) if he wanted to go out to eat tonight, since the kids were planning to spend the night at his parents. He agreed.

When I got home around 5 today I asked him if he was ready to go? He told me he had changed his mind and didn't feel like going out.

I wasn't surprised, he is an introverted person who very much prefers to avoid social situations when possible.

After getting over the initial disappointment, I asked him if he'd ride with me to go pick it up? He agrees.

We get in my car, I call the restaurant, to order ahead. The girl on the phone tells me they don't serve that particular appetizer to go.

I ask "Do you mind if I ask why?" My husband throws his hands up and says something in disagreement.

She says because they get soggy when packed for togo.

I asked if I could order them with the understanding that they'll be soggy? She tells me she's not sure, but she can go check and puts me on hold.

My husband proceeds to tell me I am being a Karen, tells me something to the effect of 'do not teach the kids to be like you'.

The girl comes back and tells me I can order them as long as I don't mind them being soggy.

After I order and hang up, my husband tells me I'm acting like my brother, among other things.

At this point I don't want to deal with his outburst anymore and just tell him to go back in the house.

I come home with my food. In an attempt to patch things up he's cleared the table and lit a candle on it for me to eat.

He comes over and tells me I'm entitled to deal with people how I want to and he's entitled to deal with people how he wants to.

I tell him I agree with him, however he is not entitled to call me names or imply I am not a good role model for our kids.

He doubles down and says he is right and the right thing to do would have been to just follow the restaurant policy

and I am being a Karen by asking them to break the rules for me.

Am I the Karen in this situation? Or is my husband being the assh*le?

EDIT: It is starting to sounds like I may not have been the Karen. Glad you guys confirmed it.

The appetizer was indeed not as crispy as it usually is at the restaurant. I still enjoyed the heck out of it.

2nd EDIT: This post just made me realize, it will have been 20 years since we started dating on Nov. 10th 2005.

Sometimes people become so afraid of seeming demanding that they forget there is a difference between *asking for an exception* and *believing they are owed one*. That distinction matters here, because the OP did not yell at an employee, demand special treatment, or refuse to accept an answer. She simply asked a question.

Emotionally, the situation seems to involve two very different sensitivities. The OP wanted a food she had been craving and was already disappointed when her husband changed their dinner plans.

When the restaurant explained that spring rolls were not normally sold to-go because they become soggy, she accepted the reason and asked whether she could order them anyway while assuming that risk herself.

Her husband, meanwhile, appears highly uncomfortable with challenging established rules. To him, even politely requesting flexibility may have registered as imposing on a worker. That could explain his reaction, but it does not necessarily justify calling her a “Karen” or questioning the example she sets for their children.

There is a useful alternative perspective here. Some people interpret rules as firm social boundaries: once an employee says, “We don’t normally do that,” continuing the conversation feels disrespectful. Others interpret many service policies as guidelines designed around predictable customer satisfaction.

In this case, the restaurant’s concern was not safety, legality, or workload, it was food quality. Once the customer clearly accepted the possibility of soggy spring rolls, the underlying reason for the restriction largely disappeared.

Hospitality research supports the importance of allowing reasonable customer choice. A study by Cathy Enz and Judy Siguaw examining restaurant and hotel service encounters found that customers tended to be more satisfied when they experienced some degree of control or choice during the interaction.

Importantly, their research distinguished customer participation from entitlement: giving someone an opportunity to request a change does not mean the business must grant every request.

That distinction fits the OP almost perfectly. She asked why the policy existed, received an explanation, proposed a solution, and then left the decision with the employee.

The worker checked with someone and voluntarily approved it. Had the answer remained “no,” the appropriate response would have been to accept it. Nothing in the story suggests she would have done otherwise.

The larger issue may therefore be less about spring rolls and more about how disagreement was handled at home. Her husband was entitled to feel uncomfortable with her request, but discomfort did not require insulting her character or suggesting she was a poor role model.

A useful rule is simple: asking politely is not entitlement; refusing to accept a reasonable “no” is. By that standard, the OP’s request was ordinary. The candle afterward was a kind gesture, but the unresolved question is whether an apology should have accompanied it.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors agreed OP simply asked a reasonable question and was nowhere near being a Karen

ChocolateNapqueen − Huh? ??? Not the Karen at all. Idk what your husband is on about.

I can understand why the restaurant wouldn’t do it for to go orders placed on a site like

DoorDash or Uber Eats because they’ll get complaints and it’ll jeopardize their standing and integrity on those sites.

But you called it in, they explained why and you said you come and get them anyways. It sounds like a win win to me.

Your husband sounds like he’s really just conflict avoidant and assumes all “why” questions to any level of authority is just unnecessary and is judging you for it.

He’s super rude to suggest that you asking questions (especially the one you asked) is some kind of character flaw that shouldn’t be passed to your kids.

I’d counter that his reluctance to ask simple questions to avoid any and all conflict is actually a character flaw.

Optimal_Peach_2402 − Obviously not a Karen, that seems like a simple question to me. Maybe I'm wrong.

MadMad92 − I agree. Not a Karen, it's a simple question why not ask

fuktupatm − doesnt really seem like u’re being a karen, i feel u would be a karen if u crashed out, but u accepted the risk that came

with ordering the item and it was easily resolved. the comment from ur husband after he alrdy flaked on dinner would have hurt my feelings.

it seems like he did try to apologize w the candle but idk, it seems like he may be the type to try

and take the path of least resistance which is also ok, but u had a specific craving and knew what u wanted.

anyways, not a karen, go forth n continue to teach ur kids it’s ok to reach for what they want without being rude

This group felt the husband’s reaction was far ruder and more disrespectful than anything OP did

Rough-Culture − your husbands being a huge d__k. I’m all about making service industry workers lives easier… but making my wife happy,

even if it moderately inconveniences an industry worker is so much more important. She literally just asked one question for you. you’re good.

Shot_Degree4964 − You would have been the Karen if the restaurant said no and you had a melt down about it.

But they said yes and had no issues so I don’t see why your husband is saying all that stuff to you.

And…not for nothing but the things he said are pretty intense and disrespectful and I’m wondering how often he treats you this way…he’s the a__hole here.

Acceptable_Mix_3434 − I’m so sorry, Karen, but your husband is an AH

These Redditors were also frustrated that the husband flaked on dinner and then criticized OP afterward

Real-Estate-Novelist − Should have just gone in and had a date with yourself and your crispy rolls.

Canceling last minute is b__lshit and I am, unfortunately, all too familiar.

Delicious-Shame − The professional chef in my family (who went to the top cooking school in the US)

just looked at me in disbelief when I read this to him and said, and I quote:

"That f__ker can come work in my restaurant for a couple weeks and his punk ass will adjust his definition of what a Karen is real f__king quick."

After some probing questions I also got something along these lines, but not direct quotes:

"Why the F__K would anyone care if she wants a soggy ass meal, as long as she doesn't try and get it for free later? !

We make the food. You eat the f__king food. If you want it knowing it'll be one soggy ass meal? I'll give it to you. Enjoy. "

And: "Genuinely hope she f__king loved her soggy egg rolls or whatever the f__k!

She ain't even baby Karen. " As well as: "That policy just keeps the bad reviews from f__king us on takeout. That's it. Big whooop. No skin off my nose.

So I throw one more thing in a box today. Whatever." With the bonus rant of: "You know what really pisses me off? Food waste.

People don't just ask me to take off the things they don't f__king like, or they call it an allergy.

So now I'm throwing half the food away from 80 f__king tables this shift, because they wouldn't say:

'Hold the tomato, please, or what cheese can I sub in?' or I'm f__king sterilizing a ton of s__t to cater to an "allergy" that's a preference.

You can just say you don't want the f__king thing. Whatever the f__k. Wasteful fuckers. "

Which led to a very, VERY long *food waste in the industry* rant that I will not subject you to. I'll take one for the team on that one.

He may or may not be a couple of cocktails deep at this point.

[Reddit User] − You weren't rude or anything, I'm sure they didn't mind. How nice that they care if they get soggy, that place has good service

Was she simply assertive, or should restaurant policies be treated as unquestionable rules? And was the husband’s reaction more troubling than the request itself?
