Woman Posted About Missing Relative, But His Parent Demanded She Delete It Immediately

When someone goes missing, families often face painful decisions about privacy, publicity, and how much information should be shared publicly. While some relatives may want to keep a situation private, others believe awareness is the most important tool for bringing attention to a case.

The original poster (OP) shared how they discovered that a relative’s adult child had been missing for years while trying to organize a family gathering. After initially agreeing to keep the information private, OP later saw another relative share a news article about the disappearance and decided to share it as well, believing more awareness could help.

However, the missing person’s parent strongly objected and demanded the post be removed, accusing OP of acting unethically. Now, OP is questioning whether sharing the article was an attempt to help or a violation of the family’s wishes. Scroll down to see how Reddit responded to this difficult missing person situation.

A person shares a missing relative’s news article to raise awareness, but the missing person’s family demands the post be removed

'AITA for sharing a news article about my missing relative?'

My relative, we’ll call “Ronnie” is angry with me for sharing an article on social media that Ronnie’s adult child

we’ll call “Sam” is currently missing and has been for the last few years.

I only found out as I was recently planning a family get together and when seeking addresses was informed of Sam’s disappearance.

At the time it had been over 2 years since Sam had been missing so when I was asked to keep silent I begrudgingly complied

as I didn’t believe there was anything that could be done that far out from the time Sam was last seen.

Last week I saw a relative had posted an article about their disappearance and decided to share the article.

Today I received a message from Sam’s Parent “Ronnie” that I needed to take down the post as I had “ interfered flagrantly

by displaying this kind of unethical and immoral behavior.”

Ronnie then threatened to call the police station in the place of Sam’s last known location to “review the repercussions of this posting.”

I feel personally that it is unethical and immoral to not get the word out that Sam is missing as this is now a cold case.

I have since received a message from Sam’s sibling to take it down as well as another message from Ronnie informing me

that another relative had “respectful[ly]…took her post down immediately upon our request. She was apologetic…….”

AITA for sharing the article that Sam is missing?. Ps I am posting on other subreddits as well as I want as many opinions as possible.

When someone disappears, families often find themselves trapped between two painful needs: the desire for privacy and the desperate hope that someone, somewhere, may have information that can help.

Missing person cases are emotionally complicated because every decision carries weight. A simple social media post can feel like either a lifeline or a violation depending on the people involved and the circumstances surrounding it.

In this situation, the OP was not sharing the article out of curiosity or entertainment. The motivation appears to have been concern and a belief that public awareness could create new possibilities after years of uncertainty. After discovering that Sam had been missing for more than two years, the OP viewed sharing the information as a way to keep the case visible.

However, Ronnie and Sam’s sibling experienced the post differently. For them, the disappearance was not just a public case; it was a deeply personal trauma involving fear, grief, and possibly complicated circumstances that outsiders may not understand.

The emotional conflict comes from two different ideas of what “helping” looks like. The OP believed that more attention could increase the chance of information reaching the right person. Ronnie may have believed that controlling when and how the story was shared was part of protecting Sam’s dignity, privacy, or the family’s ability to handle the situation.

In missing person cases, families sometimes carry information that is not publicly known, including safety concerns, legal considerations, or personal details that influence how they want the case discussed.

A different perspective is that both sides may be acting from fear rather than bad intentions. The OP’s urgency comes from wanting action after years of silence, while Ronnie’s anger may come from feeling that control over a painful situation was taken away.

When people experience prolonged uncertainty, even well-meaning actions can feel threatening because they change a situation they have been trying to manage for a long time.

Experts who study grief and trauma often explain that families dealing with ambiguous loss, where someone is missing without clear answers, experience a unique form of emotional distress.

Grief researcher Pauline Boss explains that ambiguous loss can create ongoing uncertainty because people cannot fully grieve or fully move forward. She notes that families often develop their own ways of coping with uncertainty, which can affect how they respond to outside involvement.

This insight helps explain why the disagreement became so intense. Ronnie’s reaction may not only be about a social media post but about years of unresolved pain and a feeling that someone else made a decision about a situation that has shaped their life.

At the same time, the OP’s desire to spread awareness comes from a belief that silence can make forgotten cases disappear.

The most important consideration in situations involving missing people is whether actions support the missing individual’s safety and dignity. Raising awareness can be valuable, but it is also important to consider the wishes of immediate family members and whether there are circumstances that are not publicly known.

The goal should not be winning an argument about who is right. It should be finding the approach most likely to bring answers, respect, and hope to everyone affected.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters suspected there might be hidden reasons behind the family’s request and questioned their motives

HappySummerBreeze − Did he k__l his own child? Is that why he wants it down?

Only_on_the_Surface − The only thing I can even think of that would make sense is Ronnie is in jail and they are embarrassed

or went into witness protection, and they found out after he went missing?

Catonachandelier − Sounds like Ronnie doesn't want Sam found. Did Sam have assets that Ronnie can't access unless Sam's declared legally dead?

Witty_Ad_2098 − There is something really wrong here. This doesn't add up.

Personally, I would contact the police myself and ask if this is true that they would rather you not post.

I actually wonder if he has even been reported missing.

These Redditors believed sharing a public news article would not harm the investigation and supported posting it

Efficient_Alps2361 − NTA. . ZNTA NTA NTA Seriously if Sam has been missing for over 2 years,

this is a cold case and there is no way anything you post could possibly interrupt the investigation.

If it was already in the newspaper like the other person posted then there's absolutely nothing wrong with you posting it because it is already out there.

Really call the police.

They are going to say Sam who Ronnie who ? ? So not on their radar anymore.

It might be good for someone to call them just to get an update and see where they're at with everything.

IT'S IN THE NEWSPAPER IT IS PART OF PUBLIC RECORD.

HELL I COULD SHARE THE NEWSPAPER STORY RIGHT NOW ON MY FB PAGE WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO?

! For reals it seems real sketchy that they don't want anyone to know that he's missing. Are they involved in it?

IntellectualWeirdo − None of the information included in a professional news article would jeopardize a police investigation…

PotentialGiraffe1600 − NTA. Do they want Sam to stay missing? I don’t understand why sharing an article would upset them.

These users found the family’s reaction unusual and felt missing-person cases usually require wider public awareness

Greyhound89 − Wow, sounds like a lot of other things are more important than a missing relative!

KateNotEdwina − Hmmmm. What very odd behaviour. When my brother was missing ( he was found 72 hours later - car jacking gone bad)

we all shared everything with everyone just to find him! Any information helped. Why would he not want you to share info? Very strange.

brassovaries − Tell them you'll take the post down when they honestly tell you why. Does Ronnie have anything to do with it?

Perhaps the son is in witness protection and the family thinks this might blow his cover?

I'm surprised other family members haven't let you in on what's going on.

But, then again, you didn't even know this had happened and it happened two years ago so it's not like you're close or anything.

Should relatives always share information about a missing loved one, or should families control the timing and details? What would you do in this situation? Share your thoughts below!
