Woman Recovers From Surgery While Boyfriend Tries To Eat Her Dinner Too

Sometimes a small disagreement about dinner exposes a much bigger problem underneath. I think that happens when the issue is not really about food, but about whether one partner is paying attention to the other person’s needs at all.

One 25-year-old Redditor found herself arguing with her boyfriend only three days after surgery, when she was still struggling to use one arm.

His mother brought over enough dinner for everyone, but the boyfriend decided that because the OP had previously said she planned to eat something small, the remaining food should all go to him. He only changed course after his mother objected.

The situation felt even worse because he had insisted he would take care of the OP during recovery. Scroll down to see why this dinner argument eventually led her to reconsider the entire relationship.

A woman recovering from surgery questions her boyfriend’s care after he nearly takes both dinner portions

'AIO at my boyfriend for (almost) eating both of our dinner portions?'

My boyfriend and I have been bickering about this all night, and I need to know if I am in the wrong or not.

It all started last night when my (25F) boyfriend (27M) were discussing what to have for dinner the next day (today).

We figured we’d have something small like cut up veggies, rather than making a whole meal.

Fast forward to today, his mother brings over dinner to the place him and I share, which he apparently knew about since this morning.

I get three plates out, and he looks at me strange and then apologizes sheepishly, telling me he thought I was having something small.

I tell him I was, because I figured him and I weren’t going to cook dinner,

but had I known his mom was bringing food of course I would have agreed to eat a proper meal.

His mother gets herself a serving, and he puts the rest of the food (meant for him and I) on his own plate and puts mine away.

I obviously made a big deal about it because well… she made enough food for all three of us,

and even if she hadn’t there’s no reason he couldn’t eat a smaller portion and supplement it with something on the side or eat a snack later?

But he insisted since I said I would just eat something small that all the food should go to him.

He only cut the portion size down when his mother got mad at him and offered to cook some French fries as well, which she ended up doing.

As for why I didn’t just give in and cook my own meal, I am three days post-surgery and can only minimally engage with my right arm.

On this note, my parents offered me a room at their house for the week after surgery but boyfriend got mad at the suggestion and said he’d take care of...

This is part of why the situation is upsetting me, because barring me from the food doesn’t seem like very good caring lol.

I’ve went over it so many times with him tonight and he genuinely doesn’t seem to understand why I would be upset, but I can’t help but see him as...

Am I overreacting or are my feelings understandable?

UPDATE: I’m a bit o__rwhelmed by the comments because while I expected some, I didn’t expect this many.

There are many I haven’t even gotten to read (and might not ever honestly).

I had a serious conversation with my boyfriend last night, not just about the dinner situation but just our relationship in general,

and I realized we just aren’t on the same page. So I took the advice of many and stayed with my parents for the night.

Well, I’m still here actually. Might be for a while.

I think I was hesitant to reach out because all of my family does not think he’s an appropriate match for me.

We also work at the same job, so I figured it might be awkward considering I’d have to see him there.

I have two weeks recovering from surgery to figure something out for that though.

I’m also a student and can’t afford to live in a proper place on my own so I thought I’d be homeless if we broke up.

And that’s another thing! Some of you were quite firm and strict and made me feel stupid for how much else I was ignoring about his behaviour.

So thanks Reddit, I’m boyfriendless (which is good!).

I’m a bit worried he’ll come to my parent’s house and try to convince me to get back together with him, but I feel really confident with my decision.

I didn’t include this in my post as it didn’t pertain to the situation,

but the night I came home from surgery I basically had to beg him to go out and get acetaminophen

(the nearest pharmacy is 300 metres away aka less than 5 minutes walking). He wanted to wait until the next day,

even though I was in pain and due for another dose. I wish I could say these were the only incidents, but in three years of dating it hasn’t been...

I’m a bit sad because his mother is a great cook and I’m gonna miss her meals, but the breakup was actually long overdue

and I’m unfortunately not just realizing now. I was just prolonging the inevitable. So thanks for helping me not be an i__ot.

Sometimes a relationship becomes clearest when one person is temporarily unable to take care of themselves. The OP was only three days out of surgery, had limited use of her right arm, and had specifically stayed with her boyfriend because he insisted he would care for her.

Against that backdrop, watching him claim nearly all the dinner his mother had brought was not simply irritating. It challenged the promise that she could depend on him when she was vulnerable.

The boyfriend seems to have treated her earlier comment about eating something small as a rigid agreement: she said she wanted vegetables, therefore the newly available meal belonged to him.

But circumstances had changed. More importantly, someone recovering from surgery should not have needed to argue for a reasonable portion of food that was apparently intended for both of them. His mother’s reaction is revealing too. She immediately recognized the imbalance and tried to correct it, while he continued defending his reasoning.

A different perspective emerges from the update. The dinner may have mattered precisely because it was small. Major betrayals are easy to recognize; everyday selfishness is easier to rationalize. The OP had already needed to beg him to walk a few minutes for acetaminophen after surgery.

Once the meal incident happened, she began connecting individual moments into a pattern. What looked like an argument over portions became a test of whether his promises of caregiving matched his behavior.

Relationship researcher Susan Krauss Whitbourne, Ph.D., explains that perceived partner responsiveness is considered a cornerstone of relationship science. A responsive partner listens, recognizes important needs, takes concerns seriously, and provides appropriate support. People who perceive their partners this way tend to report greater relationship satisfaction and emotional support.

That framework makes the OP’s reaction easier to understand. She was not demanding constant attention or extravagant caretaking. At a moment of unusually high vulnerability, she needed basic practical consideration: medication, food, and assistance with tasks her recovering body made difficult.

Research summarized in Psychology Today similarly describes responsiveness as recognizing distress, correctly interpreting a partner’s needs, and being willing and able to provide effective care.

Going to her parents’ home therefore seems less like an overreaction and more like choosing the environment where recovery could actually remain the priority. Ending a three-year relationship over one dinner might sound disproportionate. Ending it after one dinner exposed a longstanding pattern is something different.

The practical lesson is not to wait for another dramatic incident to prove the decision was justified. During recovery, the OP can accept reliable family support, protect her living and financial arrangements, and judge the relationship by its repeated behavior rather than its promises.

Sometimes the smallest moment answers the largest question: When she genuinely needs someone, will that person show up?

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These users urged OP to recover with her parents instead of relying on him

Quiet-Mastodon-3622 − Go stay with your parents a few days to recover properly and he will figure it out.

LemonadeLemur − NOR. Honestly you should probably go with your parents for the rest of recovery **.

I don’t think this is the sort of man who would truly care for and look after you.

canthaveme − Honey. This man took food when you're THREE DAYS POST SURGERY. He didn't help you. He took food you could have eaten.

He's a childish a** and he didn't take care of you. Go to your parents now.   NOR and he did not take care of you, he made your life harder.

You can't trust a guy who acts like that Edit: would he be mad if you show him this post? Let him look at all the comments and how people...

These commenters said taking food from someone days after surgery was selfish and cruel

dancemiasma − You are absolutely not overreacting. He weaponized a technicality to deny you food while you were recovering from surgery,

and the fact that his own mother had to get mad at him proves how incredibly selfish he was being.

burnt-beyond-reco − NOR, thats jerk move on his part, even without the surgery portion of the story.

These Redditors questioned whether he was mature or caring enough to be a good partner

phoneacct696969 − Guy who is responsible for caring for you had his mom care for him. Is this really a man worthy of your time?

PromiseToBeNiceToYou − This man does not like you. He is showing you who he is.

He is selfish and puts himself first, even when you've just had surgery. BELIEVE HIM when he shows you what a jerk he is.

Impossible_Umpire339 − NOR. He's the tragic combination of a mama's boy and a man child. Why are you with him exactly? ?

Apprehensive-Carob43 − Was his mom staying and eating with you guys? Did he really expect for the two of them to eat it while you fend for yourself?

Was the dinner incident enough to justify reconsidering the relationship, or was it valuable mainly because it exposed a much older pattern? Share your take below.

Usually two sides to arguments. Most men eat more than women do. Did you really think your healthy BF would look forward to a small evening meal of cut up veggies? … but you said that was all you wanted and he believed you. He thought maybe the anaesthetic and the pain had affected your appetite… So he rang his Mom and said he was absolutely starving, and she brought a big meal for him and a smaller meal for herself. Now, there’s the embarrassing situation where you expect some of the food, but Mom hasn’t brought enough. Hence the sheepish apology. However, he justifies what he thought because that’s what you said he wanted. He has taken it literally, decided what to do and finds it hard to change when necessary. Similar to the pharmacy. He had planned his evening. You had all day to tell him you needed more meds, but at the last minute, expected him to stop doing what he had planned, go to the pharmacy, and wait in the long queue that forms just before closing time. So he says he will do it the following day. He isn’t very flexible and doesn’t always grasp how you are feeling. Maybe he’s neurodivergent, which can make it hard to understand his reactions, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t care
